If OBS is set to variable bitrate (VBR), change its streaming rate control to CBR for a YouTube Live stream. YouTube’s live-encoder guidance recommends constant bitrate for RTMP/RTMPS ingestion. Then check whether OBS is actually dropping network frames: that points to the stream’s connection to YouTube, while buffering reported only by viewers can have a different cause.
Why changing VBR to CBR is the first fix
VBR varies the data rate as the picture changes. For live ingestion, YouTube recommends CBR, which holds the configured bitrate more consistently. In OBS, open Settings > Output, select the Streaming tab, and set Rate Control to CBR. The exact labels can vary by encoder, but the goal is a constant-rate streaming mode, not a recording-oriented variable-rate mode.
Also use a two-second keyframe interval; YouTube says not to exceed four seconds. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted delivery. These are ingest settings, not a guarantee that a weak or shared internet connection can carry the stream without interruption. YouTube’s live encoder settings lists CBR, keyframe, and protocol guidance.
Choose a bitrate your connection can sustain
The following are YouTube’s recommended H.264 video bitrate figures on its live encoder settings page, retrieved October 3, 2026. The page did not show a publication year. The minimum and recommended rates are not a promise that your particular connection can sustain them.

| Output | H.264 minimum | H.264 recommended |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
These values apply to H.264 video. YouTube publishes different recommended ranges for AV1 and H.265/HEVC, so use the row for the codec you actually send rather than applying H.264 numbers to another codec. The total stream bitrate must fit within available upload bandwidth. YouTube recommends leaving 20% upload headroom, and other people or devices using the connection can reduce what remains for OBS. See YouTube’s encoder guidance and its upload-bandwidth advice.
For example, if the connection’s stable upload capacity is close to the configured total stream bitrate, reduce the bitrate or output demands rather than relying on a brief speed-test peak. Test at the time and on the connection you plan to use, with other household or office traffic in mind.

Diagnose which kind of buffering you have
Do not treat every report of a lagging stream as an OBS bitrate problem. Check OBS’s statistics, YouTube Live Control Room, and what viewers experience; they reveal different failure points.
- OBS’s Dropped Frames (Network) counter is rising: the outbound connection to YouTube’s ingest server is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate. OBS describes network dropped frames as a sign of an unstable connection to the remote server or an inability to sustain the set bitrate. See OBS stream connection troubleshooting.
- OBS shows no network drops, but viewers report buffering: investigate the viewer’s device and connection, and whether your stream’s bitrate, resolution, or frame rate is too demanding for some viewers. OBS notes that viewers can report lag or buffering even when OBS is not dropping frames. See OBS stream buffering troubleshooting.
- YouTube Live Control Room reports stream-health problems: use the specific health message to narrow the issue, then review the encoder settings and connection. YouTube recommends checking stream health and messages during a live event.
Fix network drops from OBS to YouTube
- Set Rate Control to CBR. In OBS, go to Settings > Output > Streaming and choose CBR for the active encoder.
- Reduce the video bitrate if needed. Select a rate below what your connection can reliably upload, leaving the recommended 20% headroom for stream traffic and variation. If necessary, reduce resolution or frame rate to make the stream manageable.
- Check the full connection path. If available, test a different YouTube ingest server. OBS identifies network conditions, VPNs, security software, and bundled network software among possible connection issues. Change one variable at a time so you can tell what helped.
- Use Dynamic Bitrate only as a mitigation. OBS can lower bitrate when the network cannot keep up, but OBS warns that this does not fix the underlying cause and can reduce image quality. If you enable it, still investigate the connection and choose a sustainable baseline rate. See OBS Dynamic Bitrate documentation.
- Test before the important stream. Run a private or unlisted test with representative movement and audio, and monitor OBS statistics and YouTube’s stream-health messages. A static scene may not reveal how the settings perform during gameplay or other motion.
Why viewers may buffer when OBS reports no drops
YouTube transcodes live streams into multiple formats so viewers can select a quality suited to their device and connection. Transcoding cannot ensure that every viewer’s network or device will play smoothly. If only some viewers have trouble, ask them to try a lower playback quality or another connection; on the encoder side, test a lower bitrate, resolution, or frame rate to make the stream easier to receive.

Latency is another trade-off. YouTube cautions that lower latency may mean more playback buffering. If you selected an aggressive low-latency mode, test a less aggressive setting and compare playback stability. See YouTube’s live stream settings guidance.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Keeping VBR because it is available in the encoder: encoder options can differ by workflow. OBS 31.0 NVENC documentation describes a Variable Bitrate with Target Quality mode with a maximum bitrate, but YouTube’s live-ingest recommendation for RTMP/RTMPS is CBR. A recording-focused option is not automatically the right live-stream setting. See OBS NVENC recording settings documentation and YouTube’s live encoder settings.
- Raising bitrate to cure viewer buffering: a higher rate can make playback harder for viewers with limited bandwidth. First establish whether the problem is OBS network drops or viewer-side playback.
- Assuming one bitrate works for every codec and output: YouTube’s recommendations vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate. Match the guidance to the stream you actually send.
- Assuming Dynamic Bitrate solves the network problem: it can adapt the output rate during dips, but it does not repair the cause and may visibly lower quality.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded videos looping as a YouTube live stream, rather than broadcast live gameplay from OBS, StreamNeo runs the stream from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home. It streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube streams of uploaded videos, not camera-based broadcasts. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
