If OBS stays on “Connecting,” treat it as a symptom, not a diagnosis. First check YouTube Live Control Room’s health message and OBS’s connection and performance indicators; then work through channel and stream-key setup, the network path, and encoder load. Changing bitrate or replacing equipment before identifying which branch is failing can waste time.
1. Check YouTube’s stream health before changing OBS
Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and inspect the stream health indicator and its timestamped messages. YouTube’s dashboard checks the incoming feed; its reported errors include incorrect stream format and a daily stream limit. A red error is critical and may prevent the stream from starting, while a yellow warning can affect the event. Record the exact wording and time so you can match the symptom to a cause. Distinguish a feed YouTube is not receiving from one that arrives with poor audio or video. If the encoder output appears healthy but YouTube is not receiving it, YouTube recommends checking encoder output, updating the encoder, inspecting CPU load, and testing outbound internet. 2. Verify channel eligibility, destination, and stream key
Confirm the channel can go live
YouTube says a channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days to live stream. If this is the channel’s first broadcast and activation is still pending, OBS troubleshooting cannot bypass YouTube’s enablement process. Review YouTube’s live streaming tips.

Confirm the current destination and key
In OBS, confirm that the selected service/server is the intended YouTube destination and that it is using the current stream key from the correct Live Control Room event. YouTube describes stream keys as the stream’s “password and address”: they tell the encoder where to send the feed and let YouTube accept it. If you reset the key, replace the old value in OBS with the newly copied one. YouTube’s stream settings guide explains where to manage keys; its troubleshooting advice for third-party encoder startup errors is to retrieve the key from Live Control Room and paste it into the encoder.
Keep the key secret. Do not include it in screenshots, public logs, forum posts, or support messages; redact it before sharing any diagnostic material.

Review continuous-stream controls
For a 24/7 broadcast, inspect the event’s Auto-start and Auto-stop settings in YouTube’s stream settings. These control whether the encoder can start or stop the stream, so check that they match the intended workflow. They are not established as a universal cause of OBS remaining on “Connecting.”
3. Use OBS indicators to separate network trouble from encoding trouble
In OBS, check whether dropped frames are increasing and whether rendering or encoding lag is reported. Those point to different bottlenecks: OBS says dropped frames indicate an unstable connection to the remote server or a bitrate the connection cannot sustain; rendering or encoding overload calls for a performance diagnosis instead. If dropped frames are increasing
- Temporarily lower the video bitrate and test again. OBS’s guide gives 75% of total upload speed as a rough starting heuristic, not a YouTube requirement or guarantee; the usable rate to the ingest server can be lower or less stable than a speed test suggests.
- Try a different ingest server if your setup allows it, and check whether a VPN, security software, or bundled network-optimization utility is interfering. Change one thing at a time so you can tell what helped.
- In OBS’s network settings, verify Bind to IP is set to Default. If dual-stack connectivity seems implicated, IPv4-only can be a temporary test; if it does not help, return to the IPv4/IPv6 default.
- OBS lists network optimization/TCP pacing and dynamic bitrate as optional troubleshooting measures with platform and version limitations. Dynamic bitrate can reduce stream quality and does not repair the underlying connection.
If the physical network path may be unstable
OBS recommends wired networking because Wi-Fi can be unstable for streaming. Test a wired connection if practical. Its guide also lists modem/router connectivity, cables, network cards, switches, extenders, and outdated network drivers as possible hardware issues. Test one component at a time; do not assume a new cable will fix a key, firewall, ISP, or YouTube ingest problem. If the route or service appears to be at fault, OBS advises contacting your ISP before replacing equipment.
If rendering or encoding lag is the signal
Follow OBS’s performance path rather than treating this as dropped-frame trouble. Check GPU pressure and other GPU-heavy applications; on Windows, running OBS as administrator is a troubleshooting step. Simplifying scenes or lowering output resolution or frame rate can reduce the rendering or encoding load. Recheck OBS’s indicators after each change.

4. Check encoder format and use a representative test
YouTube’s current encoder settings guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video, CBR bitrate encoding, up to 60 fps, AAC or MP3 audio, and a recommended 2-second keyframe interval that should not exceed 4 seconds. Codec support and bitrate recommendations depend on resolution and frame rate, so there is no single bitrate that fixes every “Connecting” case.
For one concrete reference, YouTube’s current table recommends 12 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p60 and lists 6 Mbps as the minimum. That is a setting reference for that codec and mode, not a universal target for other resolutions, frame rates, or codecs. YouTube also recommends testing with audio and motion similar to the real broadcast and then monitoring stream health. If YouTube reports an incorrect stream format, follow that exact error; its error reference specifies H.264 video and AAC audio for that error.

5. Capture useful evidence and escalate
If the checks do not resolve the issue, capture the details that distinguish channel, network, and performance faults. Include:
- OBS version and operating system.
- Whether dropped frames or rendering/encoding lag is increasing.
- The exact YouTube health message and timestamp.
- The selected stream destination, but not the stream key.
- Upload-speed test result, whether VPN or security software is active, and whether wired or alternate-network testing changes the result.
