Debian is the best default choice for a home server running a continuous meditation internet radio stream with Liquidsoap and Icecast. Ubuntu Server is a strong alternative if its LTS documentation and your familiarity with its maintenance workflow make it easier to administer. The available project documentation supports both; it does not show that either distribution is faster or more reliable.
What runs the 24/7 stream
The distribution is only the foundation. Liquidsoap generates and encodes the audio feed; Icecast receives that feed and relays it to listeners. Liquidsoap can send audio to Icecast whether or not anyone is connected, and Icecast can serve feeds from mount points. One Icecast server can carry multiple streams. This setup is for audio internet radio. The documentation considered here does not specify your meditation audio’s source or format, whether you will use a single file or playlist, or the metadata you want listeners to see. Decide those details separately before writing and deploying a Liquidsoap script.

For a fresh, ordinary Linux host running the services directly, choose Debian if you want the straightforward default. Choose Ubuntu Server if you already administer Ubuntu or its documentation makes routine updates and troubleshooting more manageable. An existing virtualization host, container platform, NAS appliance, or server can change the best deployment choice; the distribution comparison alone cannot decide that.

How to keep Liquidsoap running after reboot
Do not depend on an open terminal to keep the stream alive. Liquidsoap’s production guidance recommends running it in the foreground under a service manager such as systemd. Its example service waits for network availability, runs under a dedicated liquidsoap user, restarts the program, and can be enabled at boot.
- Prepare the script and configuration. Set up the Liquidsoap source and Icecast destination for your audio. Before deploying a script or restarting the service, run
liquidsoap --checkto catch script errors. - Run Liquidsoap under a service manager. Use a
systemdservice rather than relying on an interactive session. Follow the service example in Liquidsoap’s production documentation, adapting paths and configuration to your installation. - Enable startup and restart behavior. The documented example enables and starts its service with
systemctl enable --now radio. Confirm the service name and unit file match your deployment before using that command. - Check operation after deployment. Confirm that the service starts at boot and that its restart behavior is configured. When changing the script, validate it before restarting to avoid taking down a working stream over a syntax error.
Secure Icecast before making the stream public
Change the example Icecast passwords before exposing the server. Treat Liquidsoap’s source password as a secret; do not deploy copied example credentials. Liquidsoap’s quickstart specifically warns about changing example passwords when Icecast is publicly accessible.

That warning is not a complete security-hardening guide. The documentation cited here does not settle firewall rules, TLS termination, update policy, or access-control choices for your network. Handle those using current documentation appropriate to your server and deployment.
What to check before installation
- Use a maintained Debian or Ubuntu Server release.
- Confirm the current Liquidsoap and Icecast package versions and availability for your chosen release before installation; package channels and versions can change.
- Check that the packages support your machine’s CPU architecture. Liquidsoap’s installation page documents Debian/Ubuntu packages for amd64 and arm64; verify the current package details for your system.
- Choose Debian or Ubuntu based on the system you can maintain, not an assumed performance or uptime difference. The cited material provides no resource, bandwidth, listener-capacity, or distribution benchmark figures.
- Plan your audio source, format, playlist behavior, and metadata separately; those implementation requirements are not determined by the distribution choice.
