YouTube Stream Buffers After a Video File Ends in FFmpeg: How to Prevent the Gap

When YouTube buffers as an FFmpeg file ends, check whether packets stop at EOF, whether a playlist transition pauses, or whether YouTube reports an ingest issue. Learn the right checks and fixes.

If a YouTube Live stream buffers when an FFmpeg video reaches its end, first check whether FFmpeg has stopped sending packets or paused before the next input. For one file that should repeat continuously, try FFmpeg’s -stream_loop -1 input option before that file’s -i. If FFmpeg keeps sending data, check YouTube’s stream health and your encoder settings instead: an ended input, an ingest problem, and an encoder mismatch need different fixes.

Loop one video file continuously

FFmpeg documents -stream_loop -1 as infinite looping. It is an input option, so place it before the -i for the file it should repeat. The command below illustrates the placement; it is not a tested, one-size-fits-all recipe.

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i input.mp4
  -c:v libx264 -c:a aac -f flv "$YOUTUBE_INGEST_URL"
  1. Replace input.mp4 with the path to your video.
  2. Replace $YOUTUBE_INGEST_URL with the ingest details from your channel’s YouTube Live Control Room. Keep the stream key private; do not paste a command containing it into a public forum or an unredacted support request.
  3. Adjust encoding options to match the actual media, YouTube’s guidance, and the upload capacity available to the sender.

See the FFmpeg documentation for input options and the meaning of -stream_loop -1. Looping a single input addresses that file reaching end-of-file; it does not by itself diagnose or repair a network or YouTube ingest problem.

If you are playing several files in sequence

A single-file loop is not a general playlist-transition fix. If the stream buffers between different files, determine how the inputs are combined and whether FFmpeg pauses while loading the next item, encounters a timestamp discontinuity, or reaches files with incompatible stream parameters. The right correction depends on that input arrangement; the file boundary alone does not identify it.

Diagnose the gap before changing output recovery

  1. Watch FFmpeg across the boundary. Check whether the process remains alive and continues producing frames or packets after the file ends. If it exits or stops at EOF, address input looping or sequencing first.
  2. Check YouTube’s incoming stream health. Look in Live Control Room for the stream’s status and any health or configuration messages. YouTube’s Live Streaming API also exposes active or inactive state, health status, and configuration issues; use actual reported issues rather than inferring a cause from the player’s buffering spinner. See the LiveStreams API reference.
  3. Check whether FFmpeg is still writing output. If input packets continue but output stalls or fails, investigate the output path and connection rather than treating it as source EOF.
  4. Compare the encoder configuration with YouTube’s recommendations. YouTube recommends CBR, supported ingest codecs, and a two-second keyframe interval that does not exceed four seconds. Its recommended bitrate depends on codec, resolution, and frame rate; use the table for your actual profile rather than choosing an unrelated generic bitrate. See YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
  5. Confirm the connection can sustain the chosen bitrate. YouTube recommends testing with representative audio and motion before a live event and monitoring stream health and messages during it.

Use FIFO recovery only for an output failure

FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer can attempt recovery after an output failure, but it does not loop an input that has ended. FIFO queue behavior also involves a trade-off: when the queue fills, blocking can stall the encoder; configuring packet drops can avoid blocking, but omitted packets mean data is lost. Do not change FIFO recovery or overflow settings just because the player buffered at a file boundary. First establish from FFmpeg logs that the problem is an output or queue failure. See the FFmpeg formats documentation.

What to capture if the gap persists

  • The FFmpeg command with the stream key and other secrets redacted.
  • The FFmpeg version and build, plus log lines around the boundary and timestamps showing when output stops or resumes.
  • Whether frames or packets continue after the source file ends.
  • Whether the input is one looping file or a sequence, and how the sequence is constructed.
  • YouTube’s stream-health and configuration messages at the time of the interruption.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is a prerecorded video running continuously on YouTube, StreamNeo is an alternative to keeping FFmpeg running on a local computer. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud.
