OBS YouTube Stream Disconnects When You Change Scenes: Troubleshooting Steps

An OBS stream dropping during a scene change may be a network issue or a rendering/encoding bottleneck. Use OBS stats, logs, and YouTube stream health to choose the right fix.

A stream dropping just as you change scenes does not prove the scene transition caused the disconnection. Check OBS’s dropped-frame counter, rendering and encoding indicators, the OBS log, and YouTube Live Control Room’s stream-health messages at the time it happens. Those clues help separate a network problem from a rendering or encoding overload—the fixes are different.

Capture evidence at the moment the stream drops

Before changing settings, reproduce the problem in a private or unlisted test stream, or another low-risk session. YouTube recommends testing with movement and audio representative of the real event and monitoring stream health while you test.

  1. Note the time and the scene you switched to. If the problem happens only on one scene, note its sources and effects.
  2. Watch OBS’s dropped-frame counter and rendering and encoding performance indicators around the transition. Record any warning that appears.
  3. Check the OBS log for messages at the same time. Look for evidence of connection drops or rendering/encoding strain rather than assuming the scene change itself caused the failure.
  4. Check YouTube Live Control Room for stream-health warnings or messages at that time.

The timing is useful evidence, not a diagnosis. A network problem may happen to coincide with a scene change; a complex scene may also expose a performance bottleneck. The OBS log and performance indicators, together with YouTube’s status messages, help distinguish those cases.

If OBS shows dropped frames or connection instability

OBS’s connection troubleshooting guide treats dropped frames and intermittent disconnections as signs of a network issue between the computer and the remote ingest server. An unstable connection, or one that cannot sustain the configured bitrate, can lose frames; enough dropped frames can disconnect the stream. Work through the network path before rebuilding scenes.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Match bitrate to stable upload capacity

  • Run an upload-speed test and compare the result with the bitrate configured in OBS. YouTube recommends testing upload bitrate; the connection needs to sustain the stream reliably, not merely reach a high speed briefly.
  • OBS suggests 75% of total upload speed as a general starting point. Treat that as a starting point, not a guarantee: use the capacity your connection can sustain and stay within YouTube’s current recommendation for your codec, resolution, and frame rate.
  • Lower the output bitrate and test again if the connection cannot sustain the current setting. A lower bitrate may reduce image quality, but it can be preferable to a stream that repeatedly drops.

Test the route and network connection

  • If another ingest server is available, try it. OBS also suggests testing another streaming service to help identify whether the problem is specific to a service or ingest path; this is a diagnostic comparison, not a fix in itself.
  • Use Ethernet for a test if you are currently on Wi‑Fi. OBS warns that Wi‑Fi can be unstable. A Cat 6 Ethernet cable is relevant only if you are testing Wi‑Fi instability or replacing a cable you have confirmed is faulty; a cable is not a general cure for scene-switch disconnects.
  • Check whether a VPN, firewall or other security software, or network-prioritization or “optimization” utility is interfering with OBS. Test suspected software cautiously, and re-enable security protection after the diagnostic test.
  • Check for current network drivers from your computer or motherboard manufacturer. OBS also identifies modems, routers, cables, network cards, switches, and extenders as possible hardware causes.
  • If the issue persists, restart the modem and router, then test the network hardware methodically. Contact your ISP if OBS’s network checks do not resolve it.

Review OBS network options on Windows

OBS’s connection guide lists several Windows options. Their availability can vary by platform and OBS version, so use the controls present in your current OBS settings rather than assuming every installation has them.

  • Test Network Optimizations and TCP pacing if those options are available.
  • Leave Bind to IP at Default.
  • You can test IPv4 Only. If it makes no difference, restore the default IPv4/IPv6 choice.
  • Dynamic Bitrate Adjustment can lower bitrate during congestion, but OBS cautions that it does not fix the underlying network problem and may reduce video quality.

If rendering or encoding performance worsens at the scene change

OBS uses GPU resources to composite and render scenes. A scene with demanding sources or filters can add load, particularly alongside a game or another GPU-heavy application. Reduce the workload only when the performance indicators or log point toward rendering or encoding strain; switching encoders without evidence is not a reliable first step.

Reduce competing GPU work

  • Close applications you know are using substantial GPU resources, then repeat the test.
  • If you are streaming a game, cap its frame rate or lower its graphics settings to leave more GPU capacity for OBS.

Test the scene and its sources

  • Temporarily disable expensive filters or sources, one at a time, and repeat the transition. This helps identify whether a particular element is involved.
  • Reduce the number or dimensions of browser sources and use lower-resolution media where it is suitable.
  • Keep scenes focused and simpler where possible. OBS notes that sources can consume resources even when they are not visible.

Reduce output demand if needed

If simplifying the workload is not enough, test a lower output resolution or frame rate. OBS specifically suggests trying 30 fps if 60 fps is not working. Change one setting at a time and compare performance during the same scene transition so you can tell whether the change helped.

Check YouTube’s encoder settings and stream health

Use YouTube’s current live encoder recommendations for the codec, resolution, and frame rate you have selected. The applicable bitrate depends on those settings; a number that is suitable for one configuration may not be right for another. YouTube’s guidance includes CBR, a recommended two-second keyframe interval (four seconds maximum), and codec- and resolution-specific bitrate ranges.

YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video codecs for RTMP/RTMPS, at frame rates up to 60 fps, and recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport. Check the current recommendation for your chosen configuration rather than treating a bitrate table entry as proof of what caused the disconnection. For example, YouTube’s current recommendation accessed 2026-10-03 lists 17 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p and 60 fps; that is an encoder recommendation, not a failure-rate statistic or a diagnosis of your stream.

There is no established figure here for how often a scene change causes an OBS-to-YouTube disconnection. The useful question is what your OBS counters, log, and YouTube stream-health messages show at the time.

Choose the next test from the evidence

What you observe Next test What it helps distinguish
Dropped frames or connection instability in OBS Lower bitrate to a level your upload connection can sustain; test Ethernet and, where available, another ingest server. Whether the problem follows network capacity or a particular route.
Rendering or encoding strain around one demanding scene Reduce that scene’s workload and competing GPU use, then repeat the transition. Whether a source, filter, game load, or output demand is contributing.
YouTube reports a stream-health warning Compare the warning time with the OBS log and the encoder settings for the selected codec and output. Whether YouTube is reporting an ingest or configuration issue alongside the OBS symptoms.
No clear counter, log, or stream-health clue Repeat a controlled test with representative movement and audio, changing one variable at a time. Which condition, if any, consistently precedes the drop.

These checks narrow down plausible causes; without your local OBS log, stats, and stream-health messages, no general guide can identify the cause of an individual disconnect.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep uploaded videos playing on a YouTube channel around the clock, rather than stream a live camera or gameplay session through OBS, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative.
