If YouTube sleep music starts from the beginning, first check whether you are watching a saved video or replay rather than a live broadcast. For a saved video, sign in to the same YouTube account and look for its progress bar; YouTube says a partially watched video will usually resume where you left off, though there are exceptions. The Sleep Timer can pause playback after a chosen time, but it does not repair or save a resume point.
First identify what is restarting
“Starting over” can describe different playback behavior, and the fix depends on which one you mean:
- The same saved video or replay begins at 0:00: check account sign-in and the progress indicator beneath the video.
- A playlist moves to a different video: check whether you were using a temporary computer queue or a saved playlist.
- Playback pauses and asks “Video paused. Continue watching?”: that is an Autoplay-related confirmation prompt, not evidence that the saved timestamp is wrong.
- The content is still live: a live broadcast is not the same as resuming an ordinary video at a saved timestamp. YouTube’s cited progress guidance describes partially watched videos, not the behavior of every live stream, app, or device.
Resume a saved video from its previous position
- Sign in to YouTube. Progress indicators are available when signed in on a TV, computer, or YouTube mobile app. Use the same account that watched the video previously.
- Find the same video or replay. Look for a progress bar beneath its thumbnail, then open that item again. YouTube says a partially watched video will usually resume where you left off. YouTube Help: Video progress bar
- If the bar looks out of date, refresh the browser or feed. YouTube notes that a progress bar may not update immediately; refreshing may update it, but it is not a guaranteed fix for every playback problem.
- Check whether watch history was cleared. YouTube says clearing watch history also clears progress bars. Videos watched while history is turned off do not appear in history, according to YouTube’s watch history help. YouTube Music also says pausing history while signed in to YouTube pauses it in YouTube Music for that same account: YouTube Music Help: View, delete, or pause watch history. These account-history details do not establish that paused history alone causes every resume issue.
YouTube’s wording is deliberately qualified: “When you select a partially watched video, the video will usually resume from where you left off.” It documents an exception when the video is almost complete. The progress-bar help does not promise a manual way to repair every incorrect saved point.
Use Sleep Timer to stop playback at bedtime
If your goal is to stop music after you fall asleep, use YouTube’s in-player Sleep Timer where the option is available. The documented computer steps are:

- Open the video on YouTube.
- Select Settings in the player.
- Choose Sleep Timer.
- Select how long the timer should run before playback automatically pauses.
YouTube says the player gives a silent notification when playback pauses, and you can reset the timer if you are still awake. The timer pauses playback; the computer help instructions do not say that it creates a bookmark or corrects a saved resume position. The documented steps are for computer, so the exact controls may differ on a phone or TV. YouTube Help: Set a sleep timer – Computer
Tell a continuation prompt apart from a resume problem
If YouTube displays “Video paused. Continue watching?” during an Autoplay sequence, choosing Yes continues playback. YouTube documents the prompt after 30 minutes of uninterrupted viewing on mobile, 60 minutes on the web, or 180 minutes on TV when Autoplay is enabled. It says the prompt helps protect watch history and avoid data use when someone is not actually watching. These are platform-specific prompt thresholds, not evidence that the video’s resume timestamp was reset. YouTube Help: Why YouTube asks, “Continue watching?”

Keep a sleep-music queue for another session
A computer queue is temporary: YouTube says it is not saved after the browser closes. If you want to return to the same list of videos later, save the queue to a playlist instead. That preserves the list, not a documented timestamp within an individual video. YouTube Help: Queue videos on YouTube – Computer
What YouTube Premium does—and does not establish
YouTube Premium’s help page describes saving a video spot so you can resume across multiple devices. That is a cross-device continuation benefit, not a documented repair for an incorrect saved point on a particular sleep-music video.
