Build the mix from separate sources
Import a cricket recording and a frog recording as distinct audio sources in OBS. Keeping them separate lets you adjust each bed independently instead of baking an unchangeable balance into one file. Choose recordings whose license permits your intended livestream use, and compare the actual files for tone, noise, stereo or mono format, and how their sounds interact.
Set a reasonable starting level for each source, then adjust the faders while listening to both together. Use the green, yellow, and red meter zones and peak indicator as warnings: red is close to clipping. Keep the combined digital output below 0 dBFS; it is the ceiling, not a recommended ambience loudness. Balance by listening, not by a preset ratio
Try bringing the cricket bed up until it creates the continuous texture you want, then bring in frogs so their calls remain discernible without overwhelming the scene. These are listening steps, not a factual species-level standard. The cited OBS guidance does not prescribe a numeric loudness target or cricket-to-frog ratio. Judge the particular recordings together at a comfortable monitoring level, and make small changes rather than assuming matching fader positions will sound equally loud.

Check left-right balance
Confirm each source’s channel assignment. OBS explains that mono audio is heard in both left and right channels, while stereo channels are assigned independently. If a source reaches only one side, the nightscape may feel lopsided. Check the meters and listen in stereo, then correct the source’s channel setup if needed.
Test the loop and the full output before going live
- Monitor the combined mix in OBS. Listen for masking, abrupt level changes, distracting overlap, or one species disappearing beneath the other.
- Record a representative section. OBS recommends monitoring and checking a recording before going live. Listen back through the actual output, not just the individual source previews, and adjust the faders if the result is harsh, unbalanced, or distracting.
- Inspect the loop seam. Listen to the exact points where each asset repeats. A track described as loopable is not necessarily seamless in your particular mix; the available source material does not establish an ideal loop length or guarantee a clean join.
- Listen for longer-term repetition. Check enough playback to notice recurring calls, pauses, or overlaps that could become conspicuous over a long stream. The suitability of the repetition is subjective and depends on the assets.
- Recheck peaks after every change. Raising either source can push the combined output closer to clipping. Keep the output below 0 dBFS.
Choose recordings with the right permissions
YouTube Studio’s Audio Library offers music and sound effects. YouTube says its Audio Library content is copyright-safe on YouTube; tracks marked Creative Commons require attribution in the video description. YouTube also says it cannot vouch for material from other libraries (YouTube Audio Library guidance).

For recordings from any other source, read the specific license rather than relying on a “royalty-free” label. Confirm permission for continuous live transmission, archived playback, monetization, the territories where the stream will be available, attribution, and any restrictions on standalone redistribution. A nature-sound catalog, for example, lists loopable stereo tracks titled “Night Crickets and Frogs” (0:47) and “Night Frog Orchestra” (1:17), with Colombia metadata. Those listings show that such material exists; they do not establish the rights for a particular purchase or its use in a 24/7 commercial stream (Sound Pack Tree nature sound catalog).
What the ambience sources do—and do not—establish
The cited guidance supports separate-source mixing, monitoring, channel checks, and keeping the digital output below clipping. It does not establish a best cricket-to-frog ratio, a target fader value, a universally suitable loop length, or a guarantee that a stream will run without interruption. Treat those as decisions to verify with your own assets and setup rather than promises attached to a preset.
