OBS Profile Settings: Switch Between 720p and 1080p YouTube Loop Streams

Create separate 720p and 1080p OBS Profiles for a YouTube loop, understand canvas versus output resolution, and choose a tested bitrate for your frame rate.

Use two OBS Profiles—one with a 1280×720 output and one with a 1920×1080 output—to switch a YouTube loop stream’s resolution without rebuilding its scenes. Profiles save video and output settings, but scenes belong to a separate Scene Collection. Set each profile’s bitrate for its frame rate and H.264 encoder, then test it before going live.

What OBS Profiles change—and what they don’t

An OBS Profile saves most output-related settings, including Video and Output settings. You can select a different profile from OBS’s Profile menu; OBS documents creating, duplicating, renaming, removing, and importing or exporting profiles in its Profiles guide.

Profiles do not contain scenes. Scenes are stored in Scene Collections, so changing from a 720p profile to a 1080p profile does not by itself change your loop source or scene layout. Keep the intended Scene Collection selected separately.

Create a 720p profile and a 1080p profile

  1. Create the first profile. In OBS, open the Profile menu and choose New, or duplicate a configured profile. Give it a clear name such as YouTube Loop 720p.
  2. Set its video output. Open Settings → Video. Choose the Base (Canvas) Resolution appropriate for your loop source and scene layout. Set Output (Scaled) Resolution to 1280×720.
  3. Set the frame rate and output settings. Choose the intended FPS, then set the encoder and bitrate in the relevant output settings. For H.264, use the matching YouTube bitrate range below. Set rate control to CBR and keyframe interval to 2 seconds.
  4. Create the second profile. Use the Profile menu’s Duplicate or New option and name it YouTube Loop 1080p. In Settings → Video, set Output (Scaled) Resolution to 1920×1080. Choose the intended FPS and configure the bitrate for that resolution and frame rate; keep CBR and a 2-second keyframe interval.
  5. Check the scene collection. Confirm the Scene Collection with the loop media and intended layout is active; it is separate from the Profile.
  6. Test each profile before using it live. Select the profile from the Profile menu before starting the stream. Run a private, unlisted, or otherwise suitable test, inspect YouTube’s stream health, and watch a representative section of the loop. YouTube advises testing and monitoring stream health on its live encoder settings page.

Canvas resolution versus output resolution

Base (Canvas) Resolution is the OBS work area used to position and size sources in a scene. Output (Scaled) Resolution is the resolution encoded for the stream. The OBS Studio Overview Guide distinguishes the output resolution from the canvas.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

For these profiles, change Output (Scaled) Resolution to 1280×720 or 1920×1080 as needed. Keep the canvas suited to the source and scene composition rather than changing it just to switch stream resolution. If the source is a different size or aspect ratio, check the scene preview after switching to make sure the framing remains correct.

Choose a YouTube bitrate for the profile’s FPS

YouTube’s H.264 live-ingest recommendations vary by resolution and frame rate. These are live-stream settings, not bitrate recommendations for uploading prerecorded video. The values below are the ranges on YouTube’s encoder settings page, accessed in 2026.

Output resolution Frame rate YouTube H.264 live bitrate range
1280×720 30 fps 3–8 Mbps
1920×1080 30 fps 5–14 Mbps
1280×720 60 fps 3–8 Mbps
1920×1080 60 fps 6–17 Mbps

The figures are specifically for H.264; YouTube’s settings depend on codec, ingestion resolution, and frame rate. If your encoder uses a different codec, consult the matching column on YouTube’s encoder settings page rather than applying the H.264 figures automatically. YouTube recommends CBR, a 2-second keyframe interval, and no more than 4 seconds between keyframes. OBS notes that consistent keyframes help viewers transition between available stream quality options in its transcoding guide.

Choose a bitrate your connection can sustain, not simply the top of the published range. Upload capacity fluctuates, and other traffic can compete with a stream. OBS’s network troubleshooting guide suggests using 75% of total upload speed as a starting point; that is broad guidance, not a YouTube-specific guarantee. Test the actual stream and lower bitrate if the connection cannot hold it.

Switch profiles without changing the loop scene

  1. Stop the active broadcast before changing the output profile.
  2. Open Profile and select YouTube Loop 720p or YouTube Loop 1080p.
  3. Confirm the intended Scene Collection is still active and inspect the scene preview.
  4. Check the Video and Output settings if you have edited the profile since its last test; confirm output resolution, FPS, encoder, bitrate, CBR, and keyframe interval.
  5. Start with a test or go live, then monitor OBS Stats and YouTube stream health.

A loop is the content source and playback workflow; it does not require a special OBS Profile mode. The profile controls saved output configuration, while the scene and media source handle production.

Troubleshoot overload, dropped frames, and wrong output

  • Encoding or rendering overload at 1080p: Check OBS Stats and YouTube stream health. Reduce Output (Scaled) Resolution or FPS, then test again. OBS’s Encoding Performance Troubleshooting guidance recommends reducing output resolution or frame rate when needed. Lowering Base (Canvas) Resolution is generally discouraged because it can force you to reposition or resize sources; reserve it for severe GPU-resource constraints.
  • Network dropped frames or unstable stream: Lower the video bitrate to fit the stable upload capacity available to the stream, account for competing network use, and test again. A bitrate inside YouTube’s range can still be too high for a particular connection.
  • The stream starts at the wrong resolution: Confirm which Profile is active, then check Settings → Video → Output (Scaled) Resolution. Also verify that you changed the OBS output resolution, not only the canvas.
  • Sources look misplaced after switching: Confirm the intended Scene Collection is active. If the source or layout uses a different aspect ratio or canvas, inspect and adjust the scene composition; Profiles do not switch scenes.
  • Viewers do not see expected quality options: Check YouTube stream health and test with consistent keyframe settings. YouTube’s transcoding behavior and available viewer options are not guaranteed by a particular OBS Profile setting.
