To keep an OBS stream online during a power cut, back up power for the Windows PC and every essential network device, then make sure your internet connection can still reach YouTube. A UPS can keep supported equipment running for its available runtime; it cannot keep a broadband provider’s network online or guarantee that OBS reconnects every source. Start by measuring your real equipment load and choosing backup power for the outage you actually need to bridge.
What has to stay powered
A live stream depends on two separate things: electricity at your setup and an internet path from that setup to YouTube. Make an inventory of the devices required to keep the stream running:
- Windows streaming PC and, if needed, its monitor
- Router, modem, and fiber ONT, if separate
- Audio equipment, capture devices, or other gear that needs mains power
If the router, modem, or ONT loses power, the PC can stay on while the stream disconnects. Even when your equipment has power, the provider’s local equipment, fiber infrastructure, or upstream service may not. YouTube warns that network disruption can break a live stream (YouTube streaming tips).
Choose backup power by measured load and runtime
Measure the devices you intend to keep running
Measure the PC and other essential devices under a representative streaming workload, using an appropriate power meter or reliable equipment telemetry. A PC power supply’s maximum rating is not a measurement of the PC’s normal draw. Add the loads of the router, modem or ONT, monitor, and other equipment you want backed up.

Compare watts and runtime, not VA alone
Check that the UPS’s output watt rating exceeds the total measured load, with a sizing margin. Schneider Electric India recommends output watt capacity 20–25% above the load and explains that VA and watts are different measures; runtime also depends on the connected equipment (Schneider Electric India UPS buying guide). Then check the manufacturer’s runtime information at your expected load. There is no universal runtime for an unspecified streaming PC.
When comparing a desktop UPS with battery backup, verify its watt output, runtime at your load, outlet type, and which outlets provide battery backup. For example, Eaton lists its Aurora line-interactive UPS family at 600–1000 VA and 230 Vac for applications including desktops and routers. That family rating alone does not establish the runtime or suitability of a particular model for your setup (Eaton India Aurora product family).

Match the backup to the outage you need to handle
A desktop UPS may suit brief interruptions, ride-through, or a controlled shutdown. If you need to stream through longer cuts, investigate a suitably sized home inverter or extended-runtime UPS. Check supported load, output characteristics, switchover behavior, and runtime, and confirm compatibility with the PC power supply and any existing inverter or UPS arrangement with the manufacturers or a qualified local installer. A particular inverter cannot be called suitable without details of the equipment and installation. The cited sources do not establish a typical outage duration across India or a one-size-fits-all inverter recommendation.
Keep the internet connection stream-ready
Back up and test the network path
Put only necessary network devices on suitable backup power and include their draw in your runtime calculation. During a realistic test, confirm that the broadband connection remains usable when mains power is removed; keeping the router powered does not prove the provider’s service will remain available.

Give upload bandwidth headroom
Test outbound upload speed rather than relying on download speed. YouTube recommends available upload bandwidth exceed the total stream bitrate, with 20% headroom, and advises choosing stable encoder settings for the connection (YouTube streaming tips; YouTube encoder settings guidance). If your connection is constrained, a lower stable bitrate may be a reasonable quality trade-off, but it will not restore a failed internet path.
Prefer a wired connection and diagnose dropped frames
OBS identifies dropped frames and intermittent disconnections as network-path problems between the computer and the ingest server. Its guidance recommends wired networking, checking network configuration and software interference, and contacting the ISP if the problem is outside your equipment. OBS’s dynamic bitrate option can reduce bitrate when the connection cannot keep up, but OBS cautions that it does not fix the underlying issue and can reduce quality (OBS Stream Connection Troubleshooting, dated 2024-09-30).

Prepare OBS and YouTube before the event
- Set up in advance. Configure the encoder well before the scheduled stream, then start it early enough to check the event in YouTube Live Control Room.
- Check the preview and stream health. Confirm that the preview is present and monitor YouTube’s stream health messages while live.
- Rehearse the full setup. Test with your usual OBS scenes, sources, audio, encoder settings, upload connection, and power arrangement. If you use a backup encoder, test failover before the event.
- Verify local recording. Check that the local archive is intact and growing; do not assume a YouTube stream alone provides a usable local copy.
- Confirm the viewer-facing event. Check that viewers can access the event before relying on the stream for an important broadcast.
YouTube’s live-streaming guidance recommends advance setup, preview checks, testing backup-encoder failover, checking the local archive, and monitoring stream health. These preparations reduce avoidable surprises but do not guarantee uninterrupted service (YouTube live streaming tips for computers).

- The PC shuts off: Recheck measured load, UPS watt limit, battery condition, runtime at that load, and whether the devices were plugged into battery-backed outlets. Do not judge capacity by VA alone.
- The PC stays on, but OBS reports dropped frames or disconnection: Check that the router, modem, and ONT still have power; inspect wired connectivity and upload stability; then consider the ingest path, VPN or security software, other network-optimization software, and ISP conditions. OBS treats these symptoms primarily as network issues, not problems OBS can necessarily solve itself (OBS troubleshooting guidance).
- OBS appears to be sending, but viewers report trouble: Check YouTube Live Control Room’s stream health and the outbound connection. YouTube’s troubleshooting separates encoder or source issues from connection issues and recommends checking encoder operation, CPU load, upload strength, and ISP support as appropriate (YouTube live stream troubleshooting).
- A third-party encoder cannot start: For certain encoder startup errors, YouTube’s troubleshooting guide includes refreshing the stream key in Live Control Room. This is a startup troubleshooting step, not a routine fix for a power cut (YouTube live stream troubleshooting).
After power returns, check the UPS status, Windows, OBS sources, and YouTube’s stream health rather than assuming every camera, capture source, or connection recovered automatically.
