If your FFmpeg YouTube stream stops after an RTMP timeout, try -tcp_keepalive 1 only when the problem may be an idle or dead TCP connection. It enables the operating system’s basic TCP keepalive mechanism; it does not send media, reconnect a failed RTMP publisher, or guarantee that YouTube will keep the session open. First verify the stream-specific URL and protocol shown in YouTube Live Control Room, then use the FFmpeg log to identify what actually failed.
What -tcp_keepalive 1 does—and what it does not
For FFmpeg’s RTMP output, -tcp_keepalive 1 enables TCP SO_KEEPALIVE. FFmpeg documents the option as a way to detect dead peers and help maintain long-lived idle connections; its documented default is off. The option does not set the operating system’s keepalive idle time, interval, or probe count, so those timing details depend on platform defaults. See the FFmpeg protocol documentation.
TCP keepalive operates at the transport layer. It is not proof that video or audio is reaching YouTube, nor does it repair a stopped input, invalid stream key, rejected endpoint, or genuine network outage. Use it as a targeted diagnostic or mitigation for an idle/dead connection—not as a universal “keep my livestream alive” switch.
Example placement
Place the option before the output URL so it applies to the RTMP output:

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
ffmpeg -re -i input.mp4 -c:v libx264 -c:a aac -f flv -tcp_keepalive 1 "rtmp://YOUR_INGEST_URL/YOUR_STREAM_KEY"
This is an illustrative command, not a complete encoding prescription: retain the input, codecs, and destination appropriate to your setup. Redact the stream key whenever you share a command or log. Check that your installed FFmpeg build recognizes the option and confirm the option’s placement and protocol behavior against its documentation.
Diagnose the timeout before changing flags
- Capture the failure. Save the full command and the log lines immediately before and after the failure. Note the FFmpeg version/build, input type and protocol, output URL scheme with credentials removed, and whether FFmpeg exits, hangs, or keeps running while writes fail.
- Verify the ingest endpoint. Compare the destination with the stream URL displayed for that stream in YouTube Live Control Room. Do not assume that an RTMP URL can be substituted for an RTMPS URL.
- Check RTMPS support if using a secure URL. YouTube’s guidance for connection timeout or SSL errors is to verify the stream URL and that the encoder supports RTMPS. For an SSL error, use the appropriate port for the URL YouTube provides; YouTube advises trying port 443 where appropriate. See YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance for live streaming and its encoder setup instructions.
- Try TCP keepalive only if the symptom fits. Add
-tcp_keepalive 1to the RTMP output and observe whether the same failure recurs. It may help with idle connections or dead-peer detection, but a successful test does not establish that it will prevent other kinds of disconnection. - Follow the error layer. An input-read timeout points toward the source or its connection. An RTMP/RTMPS rejection points toward the URL, key, or protocol. Failed output writes or a process exit require diagnosis from the actual error; a supervisor or separately documented recovery method may be needed if the process must restart.
There is no single setting that can be prescribed from the phrase “RTMP timeout” alone. The exact cause cannot be determined without the command, FFmpeg build, input details, log, and failure behavior.

Do not confuse timeout and reconnect options with a keepalive
| Option or setting | Documented scope | What it means for an RTMP publisher |
|---|---|---|
-tcp_keepalive 1 |
TCP transport; FFmpeg says it enables TCP keepalive, with timing left to OS defaults. | Can help detect a dead peer or maintain an idle TCP connection; it is not an application-level media heartbeat or guaranteed reconnect. |
RTMP timeout |
Maximum wait for an incoming connection; implies listen mode. | Not the documented outgoing-publisher keepalive setting. See the FFmpeg RTMP protocol options. |
rw_timeout |
Maximum time, in microseconds, to wait for network read/write operations. | An I/O wait ceiling, not a periodic heartbeat. See the FFmpeg protocol options. |
HTTP reconnect options |
Documented under HTTP, including input cases such as reconnecting streamed or non-seekable inputs. | Do not assume these HTTP options reconnect an RTMP publishing output. See the FFmpeg HTTP protocol options. |
Option names can sound interchangeable while controlling different layers, directions, and failure cases. In particular, neither RTMP timeout nor rw_timeout is documented as “send a keepalive every N seconds.” Likewise, HTTP reconnect guidance is not evidence of RTMP output recovery.
Common failure patterns and next steps
- YouTube reports a connection timeout: Recheck the URL for the specific stream in Live Control Room. If the URL is RTMPS, confirm the FFmpeg encoder/build supports RTMPS.
- YouTube or FFmpeg reports an SSL error: Confirm you copied the secure URL correctly and use the port appropriate to that URL; YouTube says to try port 443 where appropriate.
- The command waits for a connection unexpectedly: Check whether RTMP
timeouthas been set. Its documented meaning is a wait for an incoming connection and it implies listen mode. - FFmpeg waits too long on reads or writes: Review whether
rw_timeoutis relevant to the operation. It limits I/O waiting time in microseconds; it does not create a recurring heartbeat. - The input stops or becomes unreachable: Investigate the input source and its read errors. TCP keepalive on the RTMP output cannot restore an unavailable source.
- The process exits or output writes fail: Use the specific log error to decide whether the endpoint, key, protocol, transport, or process lifecycle needs attention. Do not apply HTTP input reconnect flags as if they were a general RTMP publisher restart mechanism.
