Use one YAML file as the schedule and content manifest, then have a controller translate its entries into timed actions in OBS or another playout application. YouTube does not use YAML to switch the content of live feeds: each encoder sends its own audio and video to a YouTube live stream, while YouTube’s API manages the associated broadcast event and stream resources.
What the YAML schedule controls—and what YouTube controls
A YouTube live broadcast and the feed sent to it are separate things. Google’s Live Streaming API documentation describes a liveBroadcast as the event viewers watch and a liveStream as the audio-video content delivered to YouTube. The API can schedule and manage a broadcast’s lifecycle; it does not make a YAML file a playout scheduler.
Likewise, a YouTube playlist is a collection of YouTube videos. Creating or updating a playlist through the Playlists API does not tell an encoder which media to send during a live broadcast. A separate controller must interpret the schedule and change the scene, media source, or playlist in the software producing each outgoing feed.
Choose a control pattern for multiple channels
One controller, separate output configuration
For a shared schedule, keep the timetable in one YAML file but define each channel’s output independently. Google’s documented common API pattern calls for a different stream for each channel, and API requests must be authorized by an account that owns the channel. Do not assume that a single stream resource or stream key is a universal destination for all channels. See Google’s broadcasts-and-streams guide for the documented association workflow.

OBS automation as a playout layer
OBS can provide scenes and media sources for the content blocks; an automation layer can select the appropriate scene at the scheduled time. The Advanced Scene Switcher plugin supports date/time and media conditions and scene-switch actions. Its OBS Project Forums listing reports OBS 31.1.1 as the minimum version and Windows, macOS, and Linux support; the listing was last updated 2026-08-07. The project’s release notes identify a Macro Schedule tab for actions at a specified date and time.
Those capabilities are building blocks, not proof of native YAML import. Unless you have verified a separate integration, plan on custom code or a service to read and validate YAML, then trigger OBS actions. This is an architecture pattern, not a tested turnkey recipe; neither the cited API nor plugin documentation establishes gapless transitions, a maximum number of simultaneous outputs, or the capacity of a particular PC.

Design a schedule manifest that is safe to run
Keep the schedule explicit and machine-checkable. A useful data model includes an output or channel identifier, a time zone, the start and end or recurrence rule, the target scene or playlist, and the fallback action. These fields are engineering recommendations, not YouTube requirements.

Validation checks
- Reject an unknown output, channel, scene, or playlist reference.
- Check that each media path exists and is readable before its scheduled block.
- Reject overlapping entries for the same output unless overlap behavior is deliberately defined.
- Validate time-zone identifiers and require timestamps to be explicit about their time zone. Convert consistently before triggering actions, especially across daylight-saving changes.
- Define what happens if there is no active block, a scheduled transition is missed, or media cannot be opened.
- Log the parsed schedule and next transition so an operator can confirm the controller’s expected state.
Set up and run the workflow
- Prepare your scenes and media. In OBS, create a scene or source arrangement for every content block and fallback state. Confirm that the media files are available to the machine running OBS.
- Configure each YouTube destination. For each channel, authorize with the account that owns it, create or select the appropriate broadcast and stream resources, and associate them as required by the API workflow. Keep channel credentials and stream keys separate and secure.
- Write and validate the YAML. Add output identifiers, time-zone-aware start and end times or recurrence rules, target scenes, and fallback behavior. Have the controller report validation errors rather than silently skipping malformed entries.
- Connect schedule entries to playout actions. Use a custom controller to read the YAML and trigger the relevant OBS action, or configure verified timed macros manually in Advanced Scene Switcher. YAML ingestion itself should be treated as custom unless a separately verified integration provides it.
- Start each outgoing feed and observe it. Confirm the correct channel is receiving the intended audio and video, and that the schedule’s first transition occurs on the intended output. YouTube receives the encoder’s resulting feed; it does not select the scheduled media on the encoder’s behalf.
- Test recovery before relying on automation. Simulate or safely test an OBS restart, a missing media file, a missed trigger, an expired authorization, and a network interruption. Decide in advance whether to hold the current scene, switch to a fallback, or alert an operator.
Monitor failures and plan recovery
- A transition did not happen: Check the controller log, the parsed next-transition time, the configured time zone, and whether the target scene name still matches OBS. Confirm that the automation process is running.
- The wrong channel changed: Review the output-to-channel mapping and authorization used for each broadcast and stream. Keep identifiers explicit rather than relying on a shared default.
- The scene changed but playback failed: Check the media path, file permissions, and whether the source is configured to play the intended item. Use the fallback defined for that schedule block.
- The feed stopped reaching YouTube: Check the network connection, encoder state, stream configuration, and whether the account authorization remains valid. The cited sources do not establish automatic recovery for this DIY arrangement; make monitoring and operator response part of the design.
- The schedule shifts around a clock change: Store an explicit time zone and use a consistent conversion policy. Avoid ambiguous local timestamps without an offset or time-zone context.
Costs and operating trade-offs
The YAML file and the scheduling logic do not by themselves determine the cost or capacity of a multi-output setup. An OBS-based arrangement depends on the computer, network, media storage, and the number and configuration of outputs; the cited sources give no minimum hardware specification or supported simultaneous-output count. Budget time to maintain scenes, media paths, credentials, logs, and recovery procedures.

Can one YAML schedule run different playlists at different times on separate channels?
Yes, if a controller maps each schedule entry to the correct channel output and playout action; YAML itself is not a YouTube scheduling format.
