Drive stores and supplies the source files; the VPS handles playback and rotation; YouTube hosts the viewer-facing broadcast. The encoder—not a playlist setting in YouTube—decides which video plays next.
How the pieces fit together
YouTube treats the viewer-facing event and the encoder’s incoming feed as separate resources. In Google’s Live Streaming API terminology, a liveBroadcast represents the event viewers watch, while a liveStream carries the audio and video sent by the encoder. The YouTube API can manage broadcasts and streams; it is not a Google Drive playlist player.
- Google Drive: holds your source videos and lets an authorized process on the VPS retrieve them.
- The VPS: stores complete local copies, determines playback order, and runs the encoder continuously.
- YouTube: receives the encoder feed and presents the live broadcast.
For a straightforward setup, create or schedule the event and configure its incoming stream in YouTube Studio. Keep playlist ordering and media playback on the VPS. You can use the Live Streaming API to automate event creation, binding, scheduling, or lifecycle changes, but that automation is optional.
Prepare the Drive files and rotation plan
Use downloadable video files
This workflow is for actual video files, not Docs, Sheets, or Slides treated as though they were ordinary video. Google documents binary-file downloads with Drive API files.get and alt=media; supported downloads may also use the long-running files.download route. The account and file permissions must allow the VPS process to read the content. Check the file’s capabilities.canDownload property before attempting a download. Workspace documents have separate export methods and constraints.

Authorize the VPS and choose an order
- Set up a VPS-side sync process that authenticates to Drive with the narrowest feasible scope that permits the required file access. Use an account authorized to read the source files.
- Enumerate only the intended folder’s video files. Define a deterministic order in a manifest or equivalent playlist, rather than relying on an unspecified folder listing order.
- Download files before they are scheduled to play. Check that each download completed and that the resulting local file can be opened before adding it to the playable set.
- Have the encoder read from prepared local files, not directly from Drive during playback.
- For playlist changes, stage new files and an updated manifest separately. Switch to the new playlist at a controlled boundary, such as after the current item, instead of changing the list while it is being read.
- Record sync errors and encoder exit status. Configure a restart policy and alerting so a failed download or stopped encoder is noticed rather than silently leaving the channel offline.
This is a recommended design, not a guarantee that every encoder or playlist method will handle every file the same way. Test the actual playlist and monitor YouTube’s stream-health feedback before relying on unattended operation.
Check media compatibility
Clips from different sources may not concatenate cleanly. Depending on the playback method, they may need compatible codecs, frame size, frame rate, time base, and audio layout—or they may need to be decoded and re-encoded. Validate a representative playlist before running the full schedule. The research for this article does not establish a tested FFmpeg command that handles heterogeneous clips reliably, so do not assume that a concat command or playlist file alone will resolve mismatched media.

Configure YouTube and the encoder
- Create the YouTube event and incoming stream. In YouTube Studio’s live control room, create or schedule the broadcast and configure its incoming stream. Use the ingestion address, protocol, and stream key shown for your channel and event.
- Configure the VPS encoder to match. Set the encoder to the protocol and stream settings shown in the live control room and current YouTube guidance for that channel. There is no single protocol or encoder setting established here as best for every account and input.
- Set output quality to what your source and VPS can sustain. Choose the output resolution and frame rate with the source media, sustained VPS encoding capacity, and network route in mind. Set bitrate and keyframe interval according to YouTube’s current guidance for the selected protocol and output; verify the resulting health status in the live control room. No universal bitrate, resolution, or keyframe number can safely be prescribed for every source and server in this setup.
- Start playback and confirm the event. Start the encoder with the prepared local playlist, then check the incoming signal and stream-health indicators in YouTube Studio before treating the stream as live and unattended.
Keep the stream key and Drive OAuth refresh credentials out of public scripts, logs, screenshots, and shared Drive files. Treat both as secrets: anyone who obtains them may gain access to the stream or authorized Drive content.
Know what rotates—and what does not
The Drive playlist is your source-media queue. If you choose HLS ingestion, YouTube’s HLS media playlist and segments are a separate, protocol-level way of delivering the encoder feed; they are not the playlist of source videos stored in Drive. YouTube supports ingestion protocols including RTMP and HLS, but the appropriate choice depends on the channel’s current control-room settings and the input.

The YouTube guide describes reusing one stream configuration for multiple events and says up to three broadcasts may be bound to one liveStream resource in its model. A separate stream resource per show is another option when shows require different settings. This concerns YouTube event/feed resources; it does not perform video rotation on the VPS.
If you automate YouTube events
Automating event creation or lifecycle changes requires Google Cloud project and API setup, and Data API calls must be authorized by the Google account that owns the broadcasting channel. Keep this control-plane automation separate from the encoder’s media-playback logic.

Estimate whether an Indian VPS is actually low-cost
There is no verified provider or current India-region VPS price to quote here, and a low advertised monthly price does not show whether a server can encode your chosen output or affordably send it to YouTube. Compare the full operating costs and capabilities before choosing a plan.

Estimate outbound transfer from bitrate
As a calculation, a continuous stream at B megabits per second transfers approximately B × 10.8 decimal gigabytes per day before protocol overhead. For a 30-day estimate, multiply that daily figure by 30. For example, use your intended encoder bitrate for B, then compare the calculated transfer with the provider’s included outbound allowance and overage charges. This is derived arithmetic, not a VPS provider’s published usage figure.

Compare managed streaming separately
Google Cloud’s Live Stream API is a managed transcoding product, not simply a low-cost VPS. Google Cloud says its pricing is based on active channel time, with rates varying by input/output resolution and other configuration. Check its current pricing and estimate for your configuration before comparing it with a VPS; the rates are volatile.
Rights, Drive terms, and monetization
Only stream video you have the rights to broadcast. Google’s Drive API Terms of Service prohibit using the API for “Broad video distribution or dissemination of copyrighted content without authorization” and say, “Using Drive as a replacement for a large-scale content delivery network (CDN) is not allowed.” Using Drive to retrieve your own authorized working files for your own stream differs in scale and purpose from using it as a public distribution service, but assess your actual use against Google’s current terms.
Technical ability to loop a video does not establish that a channel or its content qualifies for YouTube monetization. Check YouTube’s current channel monetization policies for the rules that apply to your channel and content; a successful livestream by itself is not a monetization determination.
