If you are streaming a long gaming session or event, plan a local recording backup rather than relying on YouTube’s archive alone.
Does YouTube stop a live stream at 12 hours?
The official guidance cited here does not say that a live broadcast must stop when it reaches 12 hours. It addresses two different viewer and creator features—automatic archiving and in-stream rewind—not a universal broadcast-duration cap. YouTube’s wording is cautious: a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured; it does not say that every such stream will be lost. YouTube Help: Archive live streams
So distinguish whether the broadcast stays live from whether a replay is saved. The cited pages establish the archive and DVR cautions, but do not establish a maximum broadcast duration.
What changes after a stream passes 12 hours?
Automatic archive capture
YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, including encoder, webcam, and mobile streams. For streams exceeding 12 hours, YouTube warns they may not be captured at all. Treat the 12-hour point as an archive risk boundary, not a guarantee of either successful capture below it or loss above it. YouTube Help: Archive live streams

Viewer rewind during the broadcast
DVR is separate from the replay after the stream ends. YouTube says viewers may only be able to rewind up to a limit because DVR capabilities may be limited or unavailable on streams longer than 12 hours. If DVR is unavailable, viewers can still see a recording of the entire stream once it is available. YouTube Help: Turn on DVR on live streams
Archive playback after the broadcast
An archive is not the same as rewind while a broadcast is live. YouTube’s encoder guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived, but it does not promise that ending and restarting a long broadcast will reliably create a saved archive for every segment. How to protect a long gaming stream recording
- Decide whether you need a replay. If the full session matters, do not make YouTube’s automatic archive your only copy.
- Enable local recording in your streaming setup. YouTube recommends recording a local archive as a backup. The exact control depends on the encoder or capture workflow you use.
- Check the recording destination. Confirm the selected drive has enough free space for the planned recording and that the recording is actually being written there. YouTube does not publish a required storage capacity; estimate it from your own recording settings and duration.
- Verify your backup plan before going live. Confirm local recording is active and, if practical, check that the file is being created. A local file protects your copy of the footage; it does not guarantee broadcast uptime, YouTube archive capture, or viewer DVR.

Does a 12-hour stream always fail to save?
No. YouTube says an over-12-hour stream may not be captured; it does not say that every one will be lost.

Will ending and restarting a stream guarantee separate archives?
YouTube’s cited guidance does not promise that restarting guarantees an archive for each segment.
