A media source failing to load and OBS losing its connection to YouTube are different failures. First check whether the source went blank while OBS stayed connected, or whether OBS reports a dropped connection. Use the recovery steps for the failing layer; restarting a clip does not restore a dropped stream connection.
Identify which part failed
Check OBS’s status and the YouTube broadcast in Studio before changing settings.
- Source failure: The media preview or program output is blank or frozen, but OBS still shows the stream as connected. Check the source, its file path or URL, and its playback state.
- Connection failure: OBS reports dropped frames or an intermittent disconnection. This points to the connection between your computer and YouTube’s ingest server, not necessarily to the media file. OBS explains that dropped frames indicate a connection that is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate in its Stream Connection Troubleshooting guide, dated September 30, 2024.
- Broadcast-state issue: OBS may be streaming again while the YouTube broadcast has stopped or is no longer receiving data. Verify the current broadcast in YouTube Studio before assuming you can resume the same one.
Recover a built-in Media Source
For a local file added as OBS’s built-in Media Source, open the source’s properties and check that the selected file still exists and plays. Test it in OBS before relying on it during a live broadcast.
Choose playback behavior deliberately
- Restart playback when source becomes active restarts the media when the source is in the current scene and becomes visible. It controls playback, not OBS’s stream output.
- Loop repeats the file after it reaches the end. It does not repair a missing file or a source that failed to load.
- Close file when inactive unloads the file while the source is hidden or absent from the current scene. OBS cautions that a short period without video can occur while the file reloads when the source is shown again. Leave this off if that reload delay would create an unacceptable gap.
These controls and their trade-offs are described in OBS’s Media Sources guide, dated January 11, 2022. Labels or behavior may differ in other source types or OBS versions.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
If the source is VLC Video or another type
VLC Video
VLC Video is a separate OBS source type that uses VLC libraries and supports playlists. VLC must be installed for the source to appear; 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. Do not assume the built-in Media Source’s playback and visibility controls apply identically to VLC playlists.
Browser, camera, or third-party source
The Media Sources guide covers built-in Media Source and VLC Video; it does not establish that their recovery controls apply to browser sources, camera inputs, or third-party sources. Check the specific source’s properties and error message, then consult documentation for that source type. Record the source type and OBS version if the failure persists.

Recover an OBS-to-YouTube connection
If OBS itself disconnected, troubleshoot the output path rather than repeatedly restarting the media source.
- Check the connection and bitrate. Compare the configured bitrate with stable upload capacity. OBS recommends lowering bitrate relative to available stable upload capacity when dropped frames or disconnections occur.
- Test another server or service. This can help determine whether the problem is specific to the current ingest route. It is a diagnostic step, not proof that the source is healthy.
- Check VPN and security software. OBS recommends checking whether either affects the connection.
- Consider dynamically changing bitrate during congestion. OBS notes that this may reduce quality and does not fix the underlying network cause.
- Use OBS automatic reconnect for connection interruptions. OBS documents automatic reconnect among its streaming setup controls; it concerns stream connection, not restarting a failed media source. See the OBS Studio Overview Guide.
Check YouTube before trying to resume
Open YouTube Studio and inspect the current broadcast state after an interruption. OBS’s YouTube integration text includes a warning that an auto-stopped broadcast cannot be reconnected, as well as a message for when YouTube is not receiving stream data. Do not assume that pressing Start Streaming or restarting a source restores the same broadcast. The integration text does not establish a universal reconnect time window, and the appropriate next step depends on the broadcast configuration. The current OBS English locale strings are available in the OBS Studio repository; that link follows the current branch, not a version-pinned release.

Common symptoms and fixes
| What you see | Likely layer | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Media preview is blank, but OBS remains connected | Source playback or file availability | Confirm the file path or media URL and test playback. Use the source’s playback controls where applicable. |
| OBS reports dropped frames or intermittent disconnection | Computer-to-ingest connection | Check stable upload capacity, lower bitrate if needed, test another server or service, and check VPN or security software. |
| Source returns after being hidden, with a brief gap | Media Source reload behavior | If enabled, “Close file when inactive” unloads the file and can cause a short reload delay when shown again. |
| OBS is streaming, but YouTube is not receiving data or the broadcast has stopped | YouTube broadcast state or output path | Inspect the broadcast in YouTube Studio; do not assume the same broadcast can be reconnected. |
What to capture if the problem continues
Before seeking help, note the exact source type, OBS version, error text, whether OBS reports a connection loss or dropped frames, and the broadcast state shown in YouTube Studio. Capture an OBS log as well. Those details distinguish a source-loading problem from an output or broadcast-state problem; without them, a single universal fix cannot be prescribed.
