FFmpeg cannot reconnect to YouTube while the computer has no working internet route. To keep a stream available through a local broadband outage, prepare a tested, separate connection—often mobile broadband—and know how to switch the encoder to it. FFmpeg’s reconnect options can help with certain input failures, while YouTube’s backup ingestion address protects a different part of the connection path; neither replaces an internet connection at the encoder.
What can fail—and what each backup can fix
A YouTube stream runs across several links: the video source to FFmpeg, FFmpeg to the internet, and the internet route to YouTube’s ingest servers. A failure in one link is not fixed by reconnecting another.

These approaches address different failure points. Their existence does not establish a controlled reliability comparison or guarantee that viewers will see no interruption.
Prepare YouTube Studio and test before the outage
- In YouTube Studio, open the scheduled live stream and verify its stream key and ingest URL in the stream settings. Keep the key private; anyone with access to it may be able to send a feed to your stream.
- Check the event’s auto-start and auto-stop settings. YouTube says these settings allow the encoder to start or stop the event when enabled; make sure the behavior matches how you intend to recover.
- Run a private or unlisted test using the same event setup and FFmpeg command you expect to use live. Confirm that the video and audio arrive and inspect YouTube’s stream health and messages.
- Keep a secure copy of the current key and the exact command or configuration needed to restart FFmpeg. Know how to inspect the event in YouTube Studio if the network returns but the stream does not resume.
YouTube’s guidance is to choose a quality that is reliable for the available connection, test upload capacity, test before going live, and monitor stream health and messages. A broadband package’s advertised speed or a download-speed result alone does not establish sustained upload capacity.

Understand what FFmpeg reconnect options do
FFmpeg’s protocol documentation describes options for retrying an input after a disconnection, end of file, network error, or selected HTTP errors, with retry and delay limits. The exact options depend on the installed FFmpeg version and the protocol used by that input. Check the documentation matching your build and test the actual command.
Do not treat an input reconnect option as a universal YouTube-output retry switch. Input handling and publishing the output are separate operations, and no retry flag can send packets while the host has no working route to the internet. If the source is a local file, for example, input reconnection will not restore a broadband connection that has failed.

When the connection comes back, check whether FFmpeg is still running and whether YouTube Studio reports a healthy incoming stream. If not, follow your tested recovery procedure: inspect the event, then restart or reconnect the encoder as needed. Whether the same event resumes as intended depends on the event settings and encoder behavior, so verify it in advance rather than assuming it.
Set stream quality using a real upload test
Test sustained upload from the exact location and connection you will use to stream. Repeat under representative conditions, including times when other people or devices are using the connection. Choose a resolution and bitrate the connection can reliably carry, with headroom for normal variation; if the upload is inconsistent, reduce the stream quality and retest.

- Test the complete FFmpeg-to-YouTube path and review YouTube’s stream health messages.
- Test the stream again after changing resolution, bitrate, encoder settings, or network route.
No single bitrate is appropriate for every Indian broadband connection, location, video, and encoder setup. Select one from measured sustained upload and successful end-to-end testing, rather than assuming a numeric setting will work everywhere.
Make mobile broadband a usable fallback
A mobile connection can provide an alternate route if fixed broadband fails. A live-streaming encoder manual describes mobile broadband through a USB modem as one possible setup, but that does not establish coverage or performance for a particular Indian location, carrier, device, or data plan.

- Choose a compatible modem, hotspot, or other way to provide the backup connection to the computer running FFmpeg. If considering a dual-WAN router, confirm modem support and its actual failover behavior before relying on it.
- Test the backup from the room and position where the encoder will run. Check sustained upload, signal stability, device and encoder compatibility, and the plan’s data allowance.
- Practise switching from the fixed connection to mobile broadband while using the same YouTube event. Confirm whether the encoder recovers automatically or needs a manual restart, and whether YouTube receives the stream on the event you expect.
- Record the steps for switching and restarting, and keep the event details and stream key securely available to the person who will respond.
Results depend on the particular device, carrier, location, signal, and plan. Do not assume that mobile data will work as a backup until it has passed a sustained upload and recovery test where the stream will actually run.

YouTube’s Live Streaming API describes a backup ingestion URL for RTMP, DASH, or HLS, and allows a feed to be sent to the backup address at the same time as the primary. This is an encoder-to-YouTube path option—not a second ISP. If the local internet connection is unavailable, neither destination is reachable from the encoder.

Evaluate this only if your protocol and encoder setup support the documented configuration. Test how YouTube and your encoder behave when the primary path fails; a backup ingest address is not a guarantee that viewers will see uninterrupted video.
Choose a recovery setup for the failure you need to cover

No option guarantees that a stream will remain uninterrupted. Pick the one that addresses your likely failure, then test the complete recovery path rather than relying on the feature name.
Troubleshoot a stream that does not recover
- FFmpeg reports reconnect attempts, but YouTube receives nothing: check whether the computer has internet access and can reach the configured ingest destination. Input retries cannot restore a failed broadband route.
- Mobile backup is connected, but the stream stays offline: verify that the encoder is using the backup route, test sustained upload, and follow the restart steps you practised. Check YouTube Studio’s stream health and event status.
- The encoder is sending, but YouTube shows a problem: inspect the stream key and ingest URL in the scheduled event, along with YouTube’s stream health messages. Ensure the current key is being used and has not been exposed.
- The stream returns but the event does not behave as expected: check auto-start and auto-stop settings and the event status in YouTube Studio; test the same recovery sequence before the next live session.
- The backup connection works briefly but becomes unstable: retest from the encoder’s location and review signal stability, sustained upload, and data allowance. Lower the stream quality if that is what the connection can reliably carry.
