How to Set Up a 24-Hour Podcast Stream in OBS Without Restarting It

Use Media Source Loop for one episode or VLC Video with Loop Playlist for a podcast series, then configure reconnect and test the full stream.

To keep a prerecorded podcast playing in OBS, loop a Media Source for one episode or use a VLC Video source with Loop Playlist for a series. Then configure your streaming destination, enable OBS automatic reconnect, and test the full setup before relying on it. Looping handles playback; it does not guarantee an uninterrupted internet connection or prevent computer, power, or operating-system problems.

Choose the right OBS source

What you want to play OBS source Loop setting Requirement or trade-off
One episode repeated continuously Media Source Loop Straightforward for a single local file.
A sequence of episodes VLC Video Loop Playlist VLC must be installed. For 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC.

OBS documents Media Source formats including MP4 and common audio formats such as MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV. Check the OBS Media Sources guide for the supported formats and source options.

Set up one episode on repeat

  1. Create a scene: In OBS, add a scene for the podcast stream if you do not already have one.
  2. Add the recording: In the scene’s Sources box, click +, choose Media Source, give it a name, and select your episode file.
  3. Enable repeat playback: In the Media Source properties, turn on Loop. This setting makes the file play again after it reaches the end; leaving OBS open by itself does not repeat a finished file.
  4. Check source activation behavior: Media Source also has a Restart playback when source becomes active option. That controls what happens when the source becomes active; it is separate from Loop. Choose the behavior that fits your scene and test it when switching scenes.
  5. Confirm the result: Preview the scene, check that both picture and sound are present, and let the episode reach its end to confirm it starts again.

Set up a playlist of episodes

  1. Install VLC: Install VLC before configuring the source. OBS says 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC for the VLC source to appear.
  2. Add the source: In your scene’s Sources box, click + and select VLC Video. If it is missing, check that VLC is installed and that its architecture matches OBS.
  3. Build the playlist: Add the episode files in the order you want them to play. Review the list for missing files and the intended sequence.
  4. Keep the playlist repeating: Leave Loop Playlist enabled. OBS lists it as on by default; it restarts the source after it runs out of media files.
  5. Decide what happens when the source is hidden: VLC Video has visibility behavior options, including continuing playback while not visible. Set this to suit your scene changes, then test by switching away and back.
  6. Test the transition between episodes: Run through the end of a file and into the next one. Confirm that video and audio continue as intended and that the playlist eventually starts again.

OBS explains both loop controls and VLC source behavior in its Media Sources documentation.

Configure OBS and your streaming destination

  1. Choose output settings you can sustain: Set your output resolution and frame rate in OBS with your computer’s capacity in mind. The OBS Studio Overview Guide cautions that 60 fps can tax system resources and recommends testing ahead of time. Do not assume a setting that works for a short session will remain stable for a long one.
  2. Connect to the destination: Open Settings → Stream and follow the current setup instructions for the platform you are streaming to. Enter the platform’s required connection details, such as its stream key, according to its official guidance. Eligibility, duration limits, ingest requirements, and key behavior vary by destination and account; check the platform’s current rules rather than assuming every account can run a 24-hour stream.
  3. Enable recovery: In OBS, open Settings → Advanced and configure Automatic Reconnect. It is a recovery aid if the outgoing connection drops, not a guarantee that OBS, the computer, or the stream will stay online indefinitely.
  4. Test the complete path: Before a long session, run the playlist while streaming, monitor OBS and the destination’s live preview, and verify audio, picture, episode transitions, and reconnect behavior. Keep the computer powered and prevent sleep for the test and planned stream.

Keep a 24-hour stream dependable

  • Playback and connection are separate: Loop or Loop Playlist controls what the source plays. Automatic Reconnect addresses an interrupted connection. Neither substitutes for the other.
  • Plan to monitor it: OBS does not establish that a setup will run forever without operating-system sleep, hardware, power, or network trouble. Check the stream during operation and test the conditions you expect to use.
  • Use content you have the right to stream: A continuous broadcast still needs to follow the destination’s copyright rules. Check the platform’s current policy and make sure you are permitted to use the podcast audio, music, artwork, and any included video. Repeating a recording does not establish permission.
  • Mind scene visibility: If you switch scenes, confirm the playback source behaves as intended when hidden. A source stopping or restarting on a scene change can look like a loop failure even when its loop option is enabled.

Troubleshoot common problems

Symptom Likely cause What to check
The episode stops at the end. Media Source Loop is off. Open the Media Source properties and enable Loop.
The playlist stops after the last episode. Loop Playlist is disabled. Open VLC Video properties and enable Loop Playlist.
VLC Video is not available in Sources. VLC is missing or its architecture does not match OBS. Install VLC; if using 64-bit OBS, use 64-bit VLC.
Playback stops or restarts after changing scenes. Source visibility behavior or Media Source activation settings do not match the scene setup. Review VLC’s hidden-source playback option or Media Source’s Restart playback when source becomes active setting, then test scene changes.
The stream disconnects. A connection, server, security-software, or network-equipment issue may be involved. Check the destination’s connection instructions and OBS’s Stream Connection Troubleshooting guide. OBS suggests trying a different server when appropriate and checking possible interference from security software or network equipment.
The stream remains connected, but playback or system performance becomes unreliable. The computer may be under load, sleeping, or encountering power or hardware issues. Test system resources and output settings, prevent sleep, and monitor the machine during a full-length trial. The OBS overview notes that 60 fps can be taxing.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you want a prerecorded YouTube stream to continue without leaving your PC or OBS running, StreamNeo runs uploaded videos from the cloud. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It is for prerecorded uploads to YouTube, not live camera input.
