You can loop a recorded lecture in OBS, keep a still image visible in the scene, and send the result to YouTube Live. Add the recording as a Media Source, turn on Loop, position the image and video in the scene, then connect OBS using your YouTube stream URL and private stream key. A 24/7 broadcast is an operating goal, not a guarantee: the computer, power, network, and encoder must keep working, and YouTube does not promise a complete archive of a stream longer than 12 hours.
Prepare the lecture and static image
Before opening OBS, make sure you have the lecture video and a still image you have permission to use. The image can serve as a background, title card, or other persistent visual. Decide whether it should remain visible behind the lecture, occupy part of the canvas, or appear only when the lecture is not covering it.
OBS scenes are layered: sources higher in the Sources list appear in front of sources below them. The image and lecture must therefore be ordered and sized intentionally. OBS’s Media Source supports common video and audio formats. Its Loop option is off by default. OBS Project’s Media Sources guide documents both Media Source and VLC Video controls.
Build the OBS scene and loop the lecture
- Create a scene. In OBS, use the Scenes panel to add a scene for the lecture stream.
- Add the still visual. In Sources, select + and add an image source. Choose the image file, then fit or position it in the preview canvas. Place it below the video source if it should act as a background.
- Add the lecture video. Select + in Sources and add a Media Source. Give it a useful name, select the lecture file, and enable Loop. That setting restarts a single file when playback reaches the end.
- Arrange the image and video. Resize and position the lecture in the preview. If the video fills the canvas, it will cover an image underneath it; to keep the image visible, use a layout that leaves part of the canvas exposed or place the image above the video where appropriate. Check the composition at the intended output resolution.
- Check audio and the loop point. Confirm the lecture’s sound reaches the OBS audio mixer and that playback begins and ends as expected. Listen to the transition back to the beginning; a file that ends abruptly may make the repeat noticeable.
For a sequence of lectures, add a VLC Video source and configure a playlist, then enable Loop Playlist. VLC must be installed, and a 64-bit OBS build requires 64-bit VLC. Test the transition between files as well as the return from the last item to the first. OBS documents these playback controls, but not a dedicated 24/7 scheduler.

Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- Confirm the channel can go live. YouTube’s current guidance says the channel must be verified and must not have live-streaming restrictions during the preceding 90 days. First-time enablement can take up to 24 hours. Check the current requirements in YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
- Create or select a stream. Open YouTube Live Control Room and create a live stream or choose the stream you intend to use. Follow the current Live Control Room prompts for its encoder connection details.
- Copy the stream URL and key into OBS. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, choose the YouTube service, and enter the server URL and stream key supplied for the YouTube stream. Labels can change with software updates; use the current values shown in Live Control Room.
- Keep the key private. Treat the stream key like a password. Anyone who obtains it may be able to send a stream to your channel. Do not show it in a public screenshot or recording.
- Start with a test. Start streaming from OBS and check the Live Control Room preview and stream-health messages before sharing the broadcast. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring the stream rather than assuming a configured encoder is healthy.
Choose output settings and monitor the connection
Use settings appropriate to your intended resolution and frame rate, and make sure the available upload capacity can sustain the selected bitrate. YouTube recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval, with the interval no longer than four seconds. For H.264 at 1080p and 30 fps, YouTube’s current encoder-settings guidance recommends 14 Mbps and gives 5 Mbps as the minimum. Those figures apply to that specific codec, resolution, and frame rate; they are not universal settings for every stream. See YouTube’s encoder settings.
In OBS, set the output encoder and bitrate under Settings > Output, and set the canvas/output resolution and frame rate under Settings > Video. Match them to the lecture and the YouTube guidance for the chosen format. YouTube advises choosing a bitrate that fits the upload connection; leave room for normal network variation rather than treating a speed-test peak as sustained capacity.

- Keep the YouTube Live Control Room preview and stream-health status open during setup and operation.
- Test the full scene—including audio, image placement, file looping, and connection—before relying on it for a long session.
OBS explains that rising dropped frames can mean the connection to the destination is unstable or cannot keep up with the selected bitrate. Its troubleshooting guidance is at OBS Help: Dropped Frames and General Connection Issues. Lowering bitrate may help when upload capacity is the constraint, but recheck YouTube’s current recommendations for the resolution and frame rate you choose.
Plan around the limits of a 24/7 broadcast
A 24-hour stream is not a dependable full-length replay
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume one continuous 24-hour broadcast will produce a complete archived lecture. If having a complete replay matters, plan shorter sessions and verify YouTube’s current archive behavior before setting the schedule. The cited guidance does not establish a full-archive guarantee for streams longer than 12 hours. See YouTube’s live-stream archive guidance.

OBS depends on the machine staying operational
A computer running OBS needs working power, a live network connection, and an encoder that continues to send a healthy signal. The platform and OBS guidance cited here recommend testing and monitoring; they do not establish a 24/7 uptime guarantee or prescribe a redundant power or network design. Plan for what you will do if the computer restarts, OBS closes, the connection drops, or the source file stops playing.
Check rights for every element
YouTube says all live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content. A match can replace the stream with a placeholder and trigger a warning; unresolved content may lead to temporary interruption or termination. YouTube also says that even if you have a license, the rights holder may need to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist to avoid interruption. Claims can also be made on an archived stream after it ends. Review YouTube’s copyright guidance for live streams.

| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
| The lecture stops at the end | Media Source Loop is off, or the selected source is not the one playing. | Open the Media Source properties, confirm the intended file is selected, and enable Loop. For a playlist, check the VLC Video source’s Loop Playlist setting. |
| The image is hidden | The video source covers it, or the image is outside the canvas. | Reorder sources in the Sources panel, then reposition or resize them in the preview. An image beneath a full-canvas video will not show through. |
| OBS will not connect to YouTube | The channel may not be enabled for live streaming, or the server URL or key may be wrong. | Check Live Control Room for the active stream’s connection details, confirm channel eligibility, and re-enter the current server URL and stream key in OBS. |
| YouTube preview or health status reports trouble | Encoder settings, connection capacity, or stream configuration may be unsuitable. | Check the current YouTube encoder recommendations for the selected resolution and frame rate, then run a test and inspect OBS and Live Control Room status. |
| Dropped frames increase | The connection may be unstable or unable to sustain the selected bitrate. | Check upload stability and the chosen bitrate. Adjust it to fit the connection and verify the result with another test. See OBS dropped-frame troubleshooting. |
| The stream is interrupted after a copyright match | The lecture or another source may contain third-party material. | Review the match and the rights for the material. If it is licensed, ask the rights holder about adding your channel to its Content ID allowlist; a license alone may not prevent interruption. |
| A long broadcast is missing from the archive or incomplete | YouTube’s stated automatic-archive rule applies to streams under 12 hours; a complete archive for a longer stream is not guaranteed by that guidance. | For a complete VOD, plan shorter sessions and confirm current YouTube behavior before relying on the archive. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is to keep prerecorded lectures looping on YouTube without leaving a home computer running, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos from the cloud and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
