You can run a study stream from an Ubuntu computer by creating a simple scene in OBS Studio, sending it to YouTube Live with the current stream details from YouTube Studio, and checking the broadcast before leaving it unattended. Treat “24/7” as an operating goal, not a guarantee: the official YouTube and OBS guidance does not promise uninterrupted service or provide a complete automatic-recovery setup.

Before you start

You need a YouTube channel that is eligible to livestream, an Ubuntu computer capable of running OBS and encoding your scene, a reliable internet connection, and study visuals and audio you have the right to use.

  • Check YouTube access: YouTube says the channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. Live content must follow YouTube’s Community Guidelines and Terms of Service.
  • Check the computer: OBS’s Linux requirements list an OpenGL 3.3-compatible GPU and an X window system or Wayland. OBS cautions that meeting the listed system requirements does not guarantee that a computer can stream or record well. Encoder choice, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity all affect workload.
  • Plan for a continuous run: A local OBS stream depends on the Ubuntu computer, power, network, OBS, and YouTube’s ingest service. Decide how you will notice and respond if any of them stops working.

Install OBS Studio on Ubuntu

OBS Project’s Linux Installation instructions, dated August 26, 2021, describe using its PPA on Ubuntu 18.04 or newer. Package instructions can change, so check OBS Project’s current Linux Installation page before running commands.

  1. Open a terminal and add the OBS Studio PPA:

    sudo add-apt-repository ppa:obsproject/obs-studio
  2. Install OBS Studio:

    sudo apt install obs-studio
  3. Launch OBS Studio from your desktop’s application launcher. If the installation or launch fails, check the current OBS installation instructions for your Ubuntu release rather than assuming the older PPA steps still apply.

Build a study scene in OBS

Keep the scene uncomplicated until you have tested the computer under the actual streaming workload. A static desk or study visual can be enough; a clock or session indicator is optional. Add only audio you have permission to broadcast. Music that is merely available to listen to is not automatically cleared for a livestream.

  1. In OBS, create a scene for the study stream.

  2. Add the visual source or sources you want viewers to see. Check that the image fills the canvas as intended and that nothing important is cropped.

  3. If you include audio, add the appropriate source and verify its level in OBS’s audio mixer. Listen to the stream test as a viewer would; do not rely only on the mixer meter.

  4. Preview the scene and any transitions or loop points you plan to use. Remove elements that add encoding load without helping the study session.

Create the YouTube broadcast and connect OBS

  1. Open YouTube Studio and create or schedule a live broadcast using the current controls shown for your channel.

  2. In the broadcast’s stream settings, use the server and stream key YouTube currently provides. Treat the key as a password: do not publish it, show it in screenshots, or place it in a public configuration example.

  3. In OBS, open Settings → Stream, select YouTube if available, and enter the connection details from YouTube Studio. Interface labels and available connection options can vary by OBS version; follow the current controls in both applications.

  4. Prefer RTMPS when the YouTube Studio and OBS connection options support it. YouTube recommends RTMPS, describing it as a secure extension of RTMP. Google’s developer documentation describes RTMPS as RTMP carried over SSL; the ingest connection requires a valid protocol, server, path, and port 443.

Choose encoder settings you can sustain

There is no single best preset for every Ubuntu computer or internet connection. Start with a resolution and frame rate that suit a largely static study scene, then verify that the machine and upload connection can sustain them. YouTube’s settings guidance says recommended bitrate depends on codec, resolution, and frame rate; its current H.264 recommendations include 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 12 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. These are recommendations for those specific combinations, not required minimums or guarantees that your connection can support them.

Setting Practical choice What to check
Resolution and frame rate Choose a level that matches the scene and the computer’s demonstrated capacity. A static study layout may not benefit from a higher frame rate. Check YouTube’s current encoder table for the chosen codec, resolution, and frame rate; test for dropped frames and encoding strain.
Bitrate control Use constant bitrate (CBR), as YouTube recommends. Set a bitrate appropriate to the selected output and available sustained upload bandwidth; do not copy a higher-resolution example blindly.
Keyframe interval Set two seconds, YouTube’s recommended interval. YouTube says not to exceed four seconds.
Encoder Use an encoder option OBS exposes that the computer can run reliably. Software and hardware encoding have different resource demands. Test the selected option at the exact output resolution and frame rate.
Protocol Use RTMPS when supported by the current YouTube and OBS connection settings. Confirm the server and stream details from the active YouTube Studio broadcast.

Before committing to a long run, perform an upload-speed test and compare the sustained result with your streaming needs. Leave capacity for normal variation and other traffic on the connection; a speed-test peak does not prove that an upload will remain stable all day.

Test the stream before leaving it unattended

YouTube recommends testing with audio and movement similar to the planned broadcast, then monitoring stream health and messages during the event. For a study stream, test the actual scene, audio, transitions, loop behavior, and encoding load you intend to use.

What 24/7 operation can—and cannot—promise

The official OBS and YouTube guidance does not specify a configuration that guarantees an uninterrupted 24/7 broadcast, and it does not provide a complete end-to-end automatic-recovery recipe. A stream can stop because of a host failure, overheating, power loss, an internet outage, OBS or operating-system problems, or a YouTube-side interruption. Monitoring and recovery planning can reduce the time a problem goes unnoticed, but no single setting removes those risks.

  • Power and cooling: Keep the computer in a suitable, ventilated location and plan for how you will handle local power interruptions. A UPS can help with some short power cuts, but it does not protect the internet connection or YouTube’s service.
  • Network: A stable wired connection is a practical choice for a stationary streaming computer. It cannot prevent an ISP outage or guarantee consistent upload capacity.
  • Restart and recovery: Decide how OBS and the Ubuntu host will be restarted after a crash or reboot, and test that procedure. An automatic restart is not the same as confirming that the YouTube broadcast has resumed correctly.
  • Monitoring: Arrange a way to notice a stopped or unhealthy broadcast and a person or tested procedure to respond. Do not describe the stream as protected by automatic recovery unless you have implemented and verified that specific capability.
  • Redundancy: A second host or additional network and power equipment may reduce some single-point risks, but adds cost and complexity and still cannot guarantee uptime.

Troubleshooting common failures

Symptom Likely checks What to do
YouTube does not detect the encoder Confirm OBS is streaming, the active broadcast is the one whose details you entered, and the server and stream key match YouTube Studio. Stop the attempt, copy the current connection details from the intended broadcast, re-enter them in OBS, and try again. Keep the key private.
Connection or ingest errors Check the selected protocol and the current server details. Verify the network is connected and that the connection supports the required ingest route. Use RTMPS if supported, recheck the current YouTube Studio settings, and retry after confirming the network is stable.
Dropped frames or an unstable broadcast Check sustained upload capacity, other network use, and whether the selected output bitrate is appropriate. Reduce bitrate, resolution, or frame rate as needed, then repeat a representative test and watch stream health.
Encoding overload or choppy output Check whether the chosen encoder, resolution, frame rate, or scene exceeds what the computer can sustain. Use a less demanding output or encoder option, simplify the scene, and test again. OBS’s baseline Linux requirements alone do not establish adequate streaming performance.
Missing, unexpectedly loud, or repeated audio Check OBS audio sources and mixer levels, then listen through the scene transition and loop point. Correct the source or level, remove unintended desktop audio, and repeat the test with the same audio behavior planned for the live broadcast.
The stream stops after an outage or restart Determine whether the host, power, network, OBS, or YouTube connection failed and whether OBS returned to a streaming state. Restore the affected component, verify the broadcast in YouTube Studio, and follow the recovery procedure you tested. Do not assume a computer restart automatically restores the live stream.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your study stream is a pre-recorded visual rather than a live camera feed, StreamNeo is an alternative to keeping an Ubuntu computer running. It is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It streams to YouTube, not other platforms, and does not broadcast from a camera.

  1. Upload the recording or create a playlist.

  2. Add your YouTube stream key.

  3. Go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded content from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on.
