A video file ending, an OBS connection dropping, and YouTube ending a broadcast are separate problems with different controls. For a finite local video that should repeat, enable Loop in the OBS Media Source properties. If OBS is still streaming but YouTube ends the event, inspect the event’s auto-stop setting in YouTube Live Control Room; if OBS reports a disconnect, check its reconnect settings.
Diagnose which part stopped
Check OBS and YouTube before changing settings. A media source can finish playback while the encoder continues sending video; a disconnected encoder output is different from a broadcast that YouTube has ended.
- OBS is streaming and YouTube is receiving data: investigate the media source’s playback settings.
- OBS reports a dropped connection or reconnect attempt: investigate the encoder connection.
- YouTube says the event ended: inspect the event’s Live Control Room settings and broadcast controls.
The available documentation does not establish that an offline OBS source always ends a YouTube broadcast, so do not assume the source is the cause without checking both statuses.
Make a local Media Source repeat
- In OBS, select the scene containing the video and open the local file’s Media Source properties.
- Enable Loop. This makes the finite file play again after it finishes.
- If the source is hidden or becomes active after a scene change, consider enabling Restart playback when source becomes active. It restarts playback when the source becomes active and visible; it is not a substitute for Loop.
- Review the other playback options. Show nothing when playback ends hides the source when the file completes; it does not itself mean the stream must stop. Close file when inactive unloads it while hidden or off the current scene, which may cause a delay when it is shown again.
These controls apply to a local Media Source. If you use a VLC Video source instead, check its playlist-specific settings: OBS lists Loop Playlist as on by default, as well as a Visibility Behaviour option for continuing, pausing, or stopping playback when the source is not visible. VLC Video requires VLC to be installed; use 64-bit VLC with 64-bit OBS.

Check YouTube’s auto-stop setting
In YouTube Studio, open the event in Live Control Room and inspect its auto-start and auto-stop settings. YouTube says that when auto-stop is on, you can stop streaming from the encoder. This setting controls broadcast behavior, not whether a video file loops. If you reused stream settings, check them on the current event: YouTube says those selections are copied when settings are reused.
For a scheduled encoder stream, follow the Live Control Room workflow as well. After the encoder preview appears, the event may still require the Go live action. Confirm the event’s status rather than treating encoder activity alone as proof that the broadcast is live.

If OBS’s streaming output disconnected
OBS’s Automatically Reconnect option is under Settings > Advanced. It concerns restoration of a disconnected output connection; it cannot make a finished local file loop or restore a remote media source that is no longer available. YouTube recommends testing an encoder stream, monitoring stream health, and testing failover for encoder-based events. Test reconnect behavior on the actual event before relying on it.
