First work out whether you are a viewer who cannot play someone else’s stream or the broadcaster whose outgoing feed disconnected. Then compare networks, verify DNS settings, and check YouTube’s live-stream health messages if you operate the channel.
First identify what stopped
Playback and broadcasting are different paths. A viewer’s device receives video from YouTube; a broadcaster’s encoder sends a feed to YouTube. A DNS or network problem can affect either, but the symptoms and useful checks differ.
- One viewer cannot watch: the issue may be on that device, its app or browser, or the network it uses.
- Several viewers report that one broadcast failed: check the broadcaster’s Live Control Room and encoder before attributing the problem to a viewer’s ISP.
- The broadcaster’s encoder disconnected: investigate its local output and outbound connection, then use the Live Control Room’s health status and error messages.
Write down the stream URL, affected device and app or browser, ISP, connection type, and the local time and timezone when the problem began. Preserve exact error text and timestamps.
Compare devices and networks
Use controlled comparisons to see whether the symptom follows a device, a network, or the broadcast itself. A comparison narrows the possibilities; by itself, it does not prove DNS is responsible.

- Try the same stream on another supported device using the original Wi-Fi connection.
- Try the affected device on an independent connection, such as mobile data, if available.
- If possible, test another device on the same ISP connection and compare with a separate network.
- Record which combinations work and fail, along with the time. YouTube recommends changing the internet connection as a playback troubleshooting step (YouTube Help: troubleshoot YouTube video errors).
If the stream works over mobile data but not over the home ISP connection, that points toward something about the original network path. It does not isolate DNS: the connection, network policy, routing, or another factor could also be involved.
Check DNS without guessing
Before changing a setting, record the DNS resolver configured on the affected device and router. Check both locations where relevant, and see whether a third-party app or network utility changed the device’s setting. YouTube specifically advises: “Confirm that you’re using your preferred DNS servers and that no third-party applications have modified them.” (YouTube Help.)

- Compare the configured resolver with the one you intended to use, or with the setting your ISP says it provides.
- If a third-party application changed the setting unexpectedly, note the change and the app involved.
- Do not assume a public DNS resolver is automatically better, or that changing resolvers will repair video transport. A DNS lookup result alone does not show whether the video connection is stable.
- Avoid changing several network settings at once. Keeping a record of the original configuration makes it easier to reverse a change and identify what mattered.
In India, DNS resolvers may be operated by an ISP or a third party. TRAI’s 2021 consultation paper describes both arrangements and notes that Indian ISPs use their own DNS services as well as other providers’ (TRAI consultation paper, 2021). That general context does not establish what resolver your ISP or device uses, or whether it changed in your case.
If you are a viewer, check playback basics
When the broadcaster’s stream appears to be running for others, focus on the affected viewing device and its connection:

- Restart or update the YouTube app or browser, then try the stream again.
- On a TV or other device where applicable, clear the YouTube app cache and retest.
- Compare another supported device and inspect the selected playback quality.
- If YouTube alone is inaccessible while other services work, YouTube’s guidance identifies connection issues or possible blocking by a network administrator or ISP as possibilities; contact the administrator or ISP if needed (YouTube Help).
YouTube’s TV playback troubleshooting recommends a minimum connection speed of 7 Mbps for HD viewing (YouTube Help). This is a viewing recommendation, not an upload target or encoder bitrate for running a live broadcast.
If you operate the channel, inspect stream health
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Create > Go live to view Live Control Room for the broadcast.
- Record the stream-health status, exact error text, and timestamp. YouTube says health-related errors appear by the health indicator; red signals critical errors and yellow moderate ones (YouTube Help: live encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions).
- Check whether the encoder is still transmitting and whether its local output looks and sounds normal. Review the encoder’s own status or logs at the time the stream stopped.
- If local output is healthy but the feed is not reaching YouTube, test the outbound connection. YouTube’s troubleshooting workflow says a healthy encoder output can point to an outbound connection issue; if a connection problem is found, contact the ISP (YouTube Help).
- Use the error message to choose the next check. YouTube identifies stream-format and bitrate problems among possible live errors; do not randomly change encoder settings when the message points elsewhere.
Viewer-side DNS settings cannot fix a broadcaster’s encoder configuration. Conversely, an encoder error does not explain why one viewer’s device cannot play a stream that is working for others.

Escalate with useful evidence
Contact your ISP
If the failure follows one ISP connection across devices, send the ISP the timestamps and timezone, affected domains or stream behavior, DNS resolver recorded on the device and router, and results of the Wi-Fi-versus-independent-network comparisons. Ask whether DNS or another network setting changed and share any relevant test output. Google Public DNS troubleshooting also recommends contacting the ISP about persistent resolver problems and asking it to reach Google where needed (Google Public DNS troubleshooting).
Contact YouTube or your encoder provider
If the issue affects the channel’s outgoing broadcast, include the Live Control Room status, error text and timestamp, plus encoder output or logs. Contact the encoder vendor for encoder-side errors and use YouTube’s support routes for YouTube-side stream issues. Avoid describing a DNS change as the cause unless the evidence supports that conclusion.
