A YouTube playlist is only a collection of videos; playing one does not automatically turn it into a live broadcast. YouTube explains how playlists work, and its live-streaming guidance describes sending an encoder feed to an event.
What you need to prepare
Decide what viewers will see and hear during the session. For example, you could send a calm static or gently changing visual with spoken breathing prompts and background audio you have permission to use. Your encoder sends that finished program as the live feed; it does not broadcast a YouTube playlist simply because you opened one.
- A YouTube channel that is verified and eligible to stream.
- A continuous audio-and-video program feed, whether live-produced or assembled from your own recordings.
- An encoder and the event’s stream URL and stream key.
- Permission for any music, video, imagery, or other third-party material in the live feed and its archive.
Confirm that your channel can go live
YouTube’s current help guidance says the channel must be verified and must not have had a live-stream restriction in the past 90 days. It sets the minimum age for live streaming at 16. First-time live-stream enablement can take up to 24 hours, so turn it on and confirm access well before your planned session. YouTube offers mobile, webcam, and encoder methods; an encoder is the relevant choice for a prepared program feed or a setup using external audio or video hardware. Create the event and connect your encoder
- Open Live Control Room. In YouTube Studio, select Create, then Go live.
- Create or schedule the event. In Live Control Room, create a stream or use Manage to schedule one. Scheduling can make the event visible in advance and let viewers opt into reminders.
- Copy the connection details. Open the event settings and copy its stream URL and stream key into the corresponding fields in your encoder. The key identifies the destination and allows YouTube to accept the encoder’s feed; treat it as a credential and do not share it publicly.
- Start the encoder and check the preview. Confirm that YouTube receives the correct audio and video before starting the event.
- Start the broadcast in Live Control Room. Go live only after the preview and your preflight checks look right.

Check music and video rights before streaming
YouTube says all live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content. If it detects a match, it may replace the live video with a placeholder and warn you to stop streaming the content; leaving it in the feed can lead to interruption or termination. An archived live stream can also receive a Content ID claim after the broadcast ends. If a rights owner has licensed material for your use, YouTube advises asking them to add your channel to their Content ID allowlist. Read YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams.
A public video, a playlist you can watch, or a track described as “copyright free” is not by itself proof that you may rebroadcast it. Confirm that your permission covers the intended platform, live use, relevant territories, and any saved archive. This applies to background music as well as video clips and imagery.

Preflight and monitor the breathing session
YouTube recommends testing before an event, checking the Live Control Room preview, and monitoring audio and video during the broadcast. For a guided breathing session, use the preview and a full-path test to check that:
- The spoken cues are audible, clear, and balanced against any background audio.
- The visual is present and appropriate for the session.
- The encoder is sending the intended program, not a desktop, test scene, or unintended clip.
- The event page is accessible as expected to the intended viewers.
Keep monitoring the feed while live; a clean preview before the event does not guarantee that the audio and video will remain correct throughout. See YouTube’s live-streaming tips.

Optional audio equipment
If you will give spoken cues live, an external microphone can be useful when your setup needs an external audio input. YouTube lists external audio hardware and microphones among encoder use cases, but no particular microphone is required or established as superior. If you are streaming a prerecorded program or already have an adequate mic, you may not need to buy anything.
