Buffering between podcast episodes is not, by itself, evidence of a YouTube episode-boundary fault. The pause may come from low-latency settings, an unstable or congested upload path, encoder problems, or one viewer’s network, app, or device. First determine whether the pause affects one viewer or many; then match its timing against YouTube’s stream-health messages and your encoder output.
First find out who is affected
Ask viewers whether the same pause happens at the same time. The scope helps narrow where to look, but it does not prove a cause on its own.
- One viewer: Have that person try a different internet connection or device and change playback quality. A problem limited to one viewer points first to their connection, app, device, or playback settings.
- Several viewers on the same network: Check that network’s available download capacity and whether other activity is competing for it.
- Viewers on separate networks: Investigate the outgoing stream and encoder, especially if the pauses coincide for those viewers.
YouTube’s guidance distinguishes viewer-side problems from stream-wide ones; compare reports with the stream-health information in Live Control Room rather than assuming every viewer is seeing the same fault. YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guidance explains how to use stream-health diagnostics.
Check whether low latency is shrinking the buffer
Live latency is a trade-off: lower latency means less read-ahead buffer in the player, which can make playback more vulnerable to interruptions. YouTube states, “Lower latency may mean more playback buffering.” Its guidance describes Normal latency as the highest-quality option with the lowest viewer buffering when audience interaction is not important. Low or Ultra-low latency may make sense for a genuinely interactive show, but should not be selected just to make an episode transition feel faster.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
For a podcast that does not depend on real-time audience interaction, check the stream’s latency choice in YouTube Live Control Room and try Normal latency on a future stream. YouTube describes most viewers on Low latency as experiencing less than 10 seconds of latency and most on Ultra-low latency as experiencing less than five seconds; those figures describe latency, not a guarantee that playback will never buffer. Read YouTube’s explanation of live-stream latency.
Match stream-health errors to the pause
Open Live Control Room and inspect stream health, including the time attached to any warning or error. Compare those timestamps with when viewers noticed the pause. A timestamped error at the same moment is more useful than the general description “it buffers between episodes.” YouTube specifically identifies keyframes not being sent frequently enough as a possible cause of buffering.

Check the encoder’s own status and preview at the same time. Look for dropped frames, connection errors, software warnings, or unusually high CPU load. If the encoder preview or output falters at episode changes, investigate how the playlist or encoder transitions between files; if the encoder remains healthy but YouTube reports an ingest issue, focus on the outbound connection and the stream-health message. Avoid changing multiple settings at once, since that makes it harder to identify which change mattered.

Measure upload capacity and leave headroom
For a creator-side problem, check upload bandwidth rather than relying on a download-speed result. YouTube says congestion and other conditions can interrupt a stream even when the connection can sustain its average bitrate. Other people or devices using the same connection can also reduce the bandwidth available to the encoder.
YouTube recommends leaving 20% room above the total stream bitrate. For example, if the combined audio and video bitrate is 10 Mbps, plan for at least 12 Mbps of available upload capacity under the conditions in which you stream. This is headroom, not a substitute for a stable connection; short drops or congestion can still matter. If possible, test the creator’s network path with a wired connection and reduce competing uploads or downloads. A cable can help test whether Wi-Fi is part of the problem, but it will not fix a viewer-side issue.

Verify encoder settings and run a realistic test
Compare the encoder’s video settings with YouTube’s current recommendations for the selected codec, resolution, and frame rate. YouTube’s H.264 examples include 5 Mbps for 720p at 30 fps, 8 Mbps for 720p at 60 fps, 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps, and 17 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. These are examples, not universal values: use the current table for your actual format and keep audio bitrate in mind when calculating the total outgoing bitrate.
Check that keyframes are being sent at the interval YouTube expects, and look for the specific keyframe warning in Live Control Room rather than guessing. YouTube’s streaming tips recommend testing with audio and movement similar to the actual broadcast, watching stream health, checking the preview, and verifying backup-encoder failover before relying on it. A static test image may not expose the same encoder or bandwidth behavior as a podcast with animated visuals, transitions, or multiple video files.

Why it can seem tied to episode changes
The timing can be a clue, but it is not proof that YouTube buffers at episode boundaries. A transition may coincide with a brief change in encoder load, file playback, or network behavior; alternatively, a viewer may simply notice an existing playback interruption when the content changes. Check whether viewers on separate networks report the same timestamp and whether Live Control Room or the encoder logged a corresponding error. Without those diagnostics, the precise cause cannot be established.
Or let it run in the cloud
