First check whether the audio and video are out of sync with each other, or whether they stay synchronized but reach viewers late. Those are different problems: YouTube’s latency setting affects how much delay viewers experience for the whole stream, while source timing in streaming software such as OBS can help correct a mismatch between picture and sound. The available platform guidance cannot identify the cause of a particular stream without checking its output and setup.
Identify which kind of delay you have
Compare the same sound and movement in the stream. If a finger tap or spoken word lines up with the visible action but both arrive late, that is whole-stream latency. If the sound happens before or after the visible action, that is an audio/video sync mismatch.
- Audio ahead: the sound is heard before the corresponding movement or image.
- Audio behind: the image or movement appears before its sound.
- Both arrive late but line up: investigate stream latency and playback buffering, not source synchronization.
Also note where you see the problem: OBS preview, playback on another device, or a saved recording. A laggy local preview by itself does not establish that viewers receive the same delay. YouTube recommends testing with representative audio and movement and monitoring stream health. YouTube encoder guidance
If the whole stream reaches viewers late
YouTube defines stream latency as the time from camera capture until the event appears to viewers. Its help guidance says the player’s read-ahead buffer is a main source of that delay: reducing the buffer can lower latency, but makes playback more likely to buffer. Network congestion and other factors can add delay even when a connection can sustain the average streaming bitrate. YouTube’s live-stream latency guidance

| YouTube latency option | Best fit | Trade-off or constraint |
|---|---|---|
| Normal | Streams that do not need much audience interaction | YouTube describes it as the highest-quality option with the lowest viewer buffering. |
| Low | Some audience interaction, without requiring real-time conversation | Less read-ahead buffering can increase buffering risk; YouTube says Low does not support 4K. |
| Ultra-low | Real-time conversation and engagement | Higher buffering risk; YouTube says Ultra-low does not support 4K. |
Choose based on how quickly you need to respond to chat and whether 4K matters. Do not select Ultra-low automatically for ASMR: a stream focused on listening may benefit more from stable playback than near-real-time interaction. YouTube says webcam and mobile streams are set up for interactivity and do not offer a selectable latency setting. “The lower the latency, the less read-ahead buffer the video player will have,” according to YouTube Help.
If the audio and picture do not line up
Check the actual output before adjusting timing
- Make a short test with the same microphone, scene, and video sources you use for ASMR. Include a visible action with an audible sound, such as a hand movement and a tap.
- Watch the test from a separate device or remote playback, not only the OBS preview. Note whether audio leads or trails, and whether the mismatch is steady or changes over time.
- Compare the test with a saved recording if available. This helps establish whether the mismatch is already present in the produced output or appears only in the live playback path.
- Check stream health during the test and note any dropped frames, disconnections, or warnings before changing settings.
Use OBS Render Delay only when the image needs to be delayed
OBS documents a Render Delay filter that delays rendering of a source image, including for syncing a webcam image to microphone audio. It is a control for delaying the picture; it does not establish that OBS caused the fault, and it is not the right first adjustment if the audio is the element that needs correction. Identify which source is early, then make a small change and repeat the remote test. OBS Render Delay Filter

Rule out duplicate microphone capture
OBS can capture a microphone as a scene audio input. Its documentation warns that selecting the same input globally and also adding it as a scene source can cause echo. Check that the microphone is not being captured twice before treating echo or confusing audio behavior as a timing problem. OBS Audio Sources
When to investigate the connection or encoder path
If the mismatch grows over time, or occurs alongside stuttering, dropped frames, disconnections, or stream-health warnings, check the connection between the computer and YouTube’s remote ingest server as well as the encoder path. OBS says dropped frames or intermittent disconnections point to a network issue on that path, such as an unstable connection or one that cannot keep up with the selected bitrate. Lowering video bitrate is among its troubleshooting actions. OBS connection troubleshooting

Run another test at settings your upload connection can sustain reliably and monitor stream health. YouTube recommends testing in advance with representative audio and movement. Network problems can disrupt delivery, but dropped frames alone do not prove that they caused an audio/video sync mismatch.

If your ASMR stream uses uploaded video rather than a live camera, StreamNeo can keep that YouTube stream running from the cloud. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. This does not diagnose or correct an audio/video mismatch already present in your video; check synchronization before uploading. Nothing has to stay on at home, videos stream as uploaded at any quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
