For a local meditation video streamed to YouTube Live, configure FFmpeg’s output recovery with the FIFO muxer: use -f fifo, set -fifo_format flv, and enable -attempt_recovery 1. The HTTP -reconnect flags are for reading HTTP inputs; they do not reconnect an outgoing RTMP/RTMPS stream.
Set up FFmpeg output recovery
This template assumes meditation.mp4 contains both video and audio, and that you want it to loop indefinitely. Replace the destination with the RTMPS ingestion URL and stream key shown in YouTube Live Control Room. Keep the key private.

'rtmps://<youtube-ingestion-host>/<stream-key>'This is a starting template, not a tested command for every media file or FFmpeg build. Use the RTMPS destination supplied for your account and region; do not assume a particular ingest host.
What the options do
-stream_loop -1repeats the input indefinitely. Without a continuing source strategy, a finite file ends when it reaches its end.-rereads the file at real-time rate rather than sending it as fast as FFmpeg can process it.-map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0selects the first video and first audio streams. If the file lacks either stream, change the mapping and corresponding encoding options.-f fifo -fifo_format flvwraps the output in FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer while specifying FLV as the underlying format used for the RTMP-family destination.-attempt_recovery 1asks the FIFO muxer to try to recover the output after a failure.-recovery_wait_time 1sets the wait between recovery attempts to one second; this is not a promise that the stream will resume within one second.-drop_pkts_on_overflow 1lets encoding continue if the FIFO queue fills, at the cost of dropped packets and possible gaps. Remove this option if you prefer FFmpeg to block encoding while the queue drains. The FIFO default queue size is 60 packets, not a fixed duration.
FFmpeg describes FIFO recovery as useful for network output because it can restart streaming after a failure (FFmpeg Formats Documentation). Recovery depends on the failure being recoverable and YouTube accepting a new connection. It cannot make an outage invisible or guarantee uninterrupted playback.

Choose YouTube-compatible encoding settings
The template’s 30 fps output and 60-frame GOP produce a two-second keyframe interval. The 3 Mbps video bitrate shown is YouTube’s published minimum for H.264 at 720p30, not its recommendation. YouTube lists 8 Mbps as recommended for that format. Those figures are encoder guidance, not results from testing this command.

These are YouTube’s current published settings, accessed in 2026; consult its live encoder settings and bitrate guidance when choosing a different resolution or frame rate. In particular, do not treat 3 Mbps as a general target for every stream. Match resolution and bitrate to the visual quality you need and the stable upload capacity available.

Why HTTP reconnect flags do not fix an outgoing stream
FFmpeg documents options such as -reconnect, -reconnect_at_eof, and -reconnect_streamed under its HTTP protocol options. They apply when FFmpeg reads a reconnectable HTTP input. They do not provide general recovery for an RTMP/RTMPS output URL. For a local file sent to YouTube, configure output-side FIFO recovery instead. Test the stream before relying on it
- Confirm the file has the audio and video streams selected by the
-mapoptions. Adjust mapping and encoding if its streams differ. - Check that your sustained upload capacity can support the chosen video and audio bitrates. Leave headroom for network variation rather than choosing settings that consume all available upload bandwidth.
- Start a private or otherwise appropriate test stream using the same kind of audio and visual motion expected in the meditation broadcast.
- Watch YouTube Live Control Room’s stream health and warnings. Confirm that video, audio, and keyframes arrive as expected before leaving the broadcast running.
- If you need to verify recovery behavior, test a brief network interruption before the real broadcast. A successful recovery attempt is not a guarantee against every outage or ingest-side rejection.
YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts delivery to Google’s servers. Its live encoder guidance covers supported protocols, codecs, bitrate, keyframes, and audio settings: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

Troubleshoot common failures
- The file ends and the stream stops: Check that
-stream_loop -1is present before the input. It is intended to repeat a local file indefinitely. - FFmpeg reports a missing stream: The sample maps both the first video and first audio stream. Inspect the file and remove or revise the mapping and encoding options for streams it does not contain.
- The output does not reconnect: Confirm the FIFO options are on the output side, the destination is the correct RTMPS URL, and the stream key is current. FIFO recovery only helps with recoverable failures when the ingest service accepts a new connection.
- The picture or sound breaks after an interruption: With
-drop_pkts_on_overflow 1, a full queue can cause packet loss. Removing it avoids that drop policy but may block encoding while queued packets drain; neither setting eliminates gaps caused by a network outage. - YouTube reports stream warnings: Recheck the selected resolution, frame rate, bitrate, keyframe interval, codec, and audio settings against YouTube’s guidance, then review the stream health display. The template’s 3 Mbps setting is only the published minimum for 720p30.
