For a 24/7 lecture stream, start with OBS at 1920×1080, 30 fps, H.264, CBR, and a 2-second keyframe interval. YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists 5 Mbps as the minimum and 14 Mbps as the recommended bitrate for H.264 1080p30; use a sustained rate your upload connection and computer can maintain, then test it before relying on the stream. A single broadcast running continuously for 24 hours also exceeds YouTube’s 12-hour archive threshold, so plan separate local recordings if you need a dependable copy.
Recommended OBS settings for 1080p30 lecture video
Use this as a starting profile for a mostly static lecture. The best sustainable settings depend on the actual encoder hardware, upload connection, source material and audio setup; no single preset guarantees uninterrupted streaming.
| Setting | Starting value | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Resolution | 1920×1080 output | Use a canvas that fits the source and layout, scaling to 1080p when needed. |
| Frame rate | 30 fps | A practical baseline for largely static lecture content. OBS notes that 60 fps can be more taxing than 30 fps. |
| Video codec | H.264 | A broadly compatible baseline for YouTube live ingestion. |
| Rate control | CBR | Use constant bitrate for the live stream. |
| Bitrate | 5 Mbps minimum; 14 Mbps recommended by YouTube for H.264 1080p30 | These are YouTube’s current platform figures, accessed 2026-10-03. The 14 Mbps recommendation is not a guarantee of stability; choose a rate your upload can sustain. |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds | YouTube recommends 2 seconds and says not to exceed 4 seconds. |
| Audio codec and bitrate | AAC or MP3; 128 Kbps for stereo | These are among YouTube’s RTMP/RTMPS audio recommendations. |
| Audio sample rate | 44.1 kHz for stereo | Match the stream’s audio configuration to the platform guidance. |

Set the video and output in OBS
- In OBS, open Settings > Video. Set the output resolution to 1920×1080 and the frame rate to 30. Set the base canvas to match your source and scene layout; if it differs from 1080p, scale the output to 1920×1080.
- Open Settings > Output and configure the streaming encoder for H.264, CBR, and a 2-second keyframe interval. Enter a bitrate within YouTube’s guidance that your connection can consistently upload.
- In the encoder’s advanced options, use settings compatible with YouTube’s SDR recommendations: progressive scan, square pixels, Rec. 709, and 8-bit. YouTube also lists two B-frames, one reference frame and CABAC among its recommended advanced parameters. The names and availability of these controls can vary by encoder.
- Open Settings > Audio and configure stereo at 44.1 kHz where appropriate. For the stream encoder, use AAC or MP3 and 128 Kbps for stereo, following YouTube’s RTMP/RTMPS guidance.
- Use a separate OBS profile for the tested YouTube stream configuration if you also use other output settings. OBS profiles can save and switch sets of stream and output settings.

Choose an encoder and bitrate your setup can sustain
Hardware versus software encoding
OBS says hardware encoding can offload work from the CPU and is generally recommended for performance when supported. However, older-generation hardware encoders can deliver lower image quality than newer ones at the same bitrate. Select an encoder your computer supports and test it under the actual workload. The ideal encoder and preset cannot be determined without knowing the machine and testing it over time. See OBS hardware encoding guidance.
Test the upload connection, not just its advertised speed
The stream needs a sustained upload rate, not a short speed-test peak. Test at the intended bitrate while sending representative lecture audio and motion, and watch YouTube’s stream health and messages. If the stream is unstable, lower the bitrate and test again rather than assuming that YouTube’s recommended 14 Mbps will work on every connection. YouTube transcodes live streams for different devices and connection qualities, but that does not remove the need for a stable feed at ingestion.

Connect OBS to YouTube and test recovery
- In YouTube Studio’s live control room, create or select the event and copy its stream key. Keep the key private: anyone who has it may be able to send a stream to your channel.
- In OBS, open Settings > Stream, select YouTube as the service, and connect the account or enter the stream key using the option shown in your OBS version. Use RTMPS where supported.
- Before a long broadcast, make a test stream with representative lecture audio and motion. Check YouTube’s stream health and messages, confirm the picture and voice are intelligible, and verify the OBS output remains stable.
- Enable OBS automatic reconnect and test recovery by simulating a brief network interruption before depending on it. YouTube recommends testing before going live and reviewing stream health. Official guidance reviewed here does not specify universal reconnect retry values for a 24/7 production.

Plan around YouTube’s 12-hour archive limit
Do not rely on YouTube to preserve one uninterrupted 24/7 broadcast. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, while streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. If you need YouTube archives, divide the schedule into shorter live events. Keep a separate local recording when preservation matters.
OBS recommends recording to MKV because an ungraceful stop is less likely to corrupt the entire file. Local recording still requires enough storage and a computer that stays running; account for both before leaving a recording unattended. Common problems and fixes
| Symptom | Likely issue | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube reports unstable stream health or dropped frames | The upload connection may not sustain the chosen bitrate. | Lower the bitrate, test again at the intended resolution and watch stream health during the test. |
| The picture stutters or the computer struggles | The encoder or overall workload may be too demanding for the machine. | Test a supported hardware encoder to offload CPU work, or reduce the workload and repeat a sustained test. Remember that encoder quality can vary by hardware generation. |
| The stream connects but the picture is soft or uneven | The output may be scaled from a mismatched canvas, or the bitrate may not suit the content and connection. | Check that the canvas and output dimensions are intentional, then test a sustainable bitrate with representative content. |
| The lecture voice is missing or hard to understand | The audio source, routing, levels or microphone conditions may be wrong. | Make a private or test broadcast, confirm the intended audio source is active, and listen to the result. Microphone choice and filters depend on the room and equipment. |
| A long stream has no YouTube archive | A single broadcast longer than 12 hours may not be captured. | For future broadcasts, schedule events shorter than 12 hours and keep a separate local recording when needed. |
| The stream does not resume after a connection interruption | Reconnect behavior has not been tested or the interruption outlasted recovery. | Enable OBS automatic reconnect and test a brief interruption in advance; do not assume a universal retry setting will suit every setup. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is a YouTube channel that keeps playing uploaded lecture recordings around the clock, StreamNeo is an alternative to leaving OBS and a computer running at home. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; it loops uploaded videos from the cloud. It does not stream from a camera. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on, it supports uploaded video as-is up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo for details, then start the free first day.
