April Fools’ gaming jokes in 2025 ranged from fake game announcements to real, temporary in-game events. The most useful distinction is whether a gag stayed a joke, became playable content, or promoted a genuine game. Here’s a roundup of the most notable examples, not an objective ranking of which was funniest.
At a glance: joke, playable event, or real release?
| Example | Format and status | Dates and platform |
|---|---|---|
| Minecraft “Craftmine” | Fictional update premise reported in a roundup; not a real update. | Announced around April 1, 2025; platform details not stated by Gematsu. |
| New Blood Interactive’s DUSK ’82 for Game Boy Color | Joke announcement reported in a roundup; not a real release. | Reported around April 1, 2025; the gag named Game Boy Color. |
| The Talos Principle: Reawakened, “Thinking Not Required” | Joke concept reported in a roundup; not a real feature. | Reported around April 1, 2025; platform details not stated by Gematsu. |
| Dreams of Aether | A real Steam game promoted with an April Fools’ free-play window. | Free for 24 hours for the promotion; that window has ended. |
| Among Us: ehT dlekS | Real, temporary playable map—a backwards version of The Skeld. | April 1 through April 8, 2025, at 07:00 UTC; Among Us matchmaking and game creation. |
| Delta Force | A false announcement was officially distinguished from actual themed events and rewards. | Saeed’s Arsenal ran April 1–7; Fools’ Rocketeer ran March 28–April 3, 2025. The follow-up did not specify platforms. |
| Overwatch 2 “Normalwatch” | A real, temporary Arcade event with challenges and cosmetics, reported by PC Gamer. | Playable through April 14, 2025; platform details not stated in that report. |
| World of Warcraft patch notes | Satirical notes, not real features, according to GameSpot’s roundup. | Reported around April 1, 2025; no event duration or platform detail stated. |
| Age of Wonders 4: Giant Kings | A real expansion release, not an April Fools’ prank. | Released April 1, 2025; platform details not stated in the correction. |
Fake announcements and trailers that leaned into the absurd
Gematsu’s April Fools’ Day 2025 compilation, published March 31 and updated during April 1, gathered jokes from across the industry. Its examples included Minecraft’s “Craftmine” update premise, New Blood Interactive’s DUSK ’82 for Game Boy Color, and The Talos Principle: Reawakened’s “Thinking Not Required” concept. The compilation also recorded game-specific gags involving ARK: Survival Ascended, Sonic, and Asphalt Legends Unite.
These are best understood as reported joke announcements, not evidence that the named games received those updates, ports, or features. The compilation identifies the original publishers behind its entries; the titles and premises are amusing precisely because they borrow the language of plausible game news and then push it somewhere deliberately ridiculous.
Real April Fools’ content you could actually play
Among Us turned an old joke into a temporary map
Among Us’s official April 1 Steam announcement brought back ehT dlekS, a backwards version of The Skeld originally used as a 2021 joke. This was an actual playable throwback, replacing The Skeld in matchmaking and game creation until April 8, 2025, at 07:00 UTC. That limited window is historical; the announcement does not establish that the map remains available now.

Overwatch 2 made the joke an Arcade event
PC Gamer reported that Overwatch 2’s “Normalwatch” event added an Arcade mode, challenges, cosmetics, a humorous premise, and satirical patch notes. The event was playable through April 14, 2025. It was more than a mock announcement, but its event window has passed; the reported details should not be read as a current mode or permanent feature.
A real game offered as an April Fools’ promotion
Dreams of Aether was not a fake game. Rivals of Aether II’s Steam announcement described it as a real game on Steam, available free for 24 hours to celebrate April Fools’. It featured microgames and a “dubiously-canon” story. The joke was the promotion and its framing—not the game’s existence—and the free window is over.

Delta Force: separating the false announcement from real events
In an April 2 follow-up, Garena said that Saeed had infiltrated its systems on April 1 and released a false announcement that caused widespread confusion. The same post separately listed actual themed events: Saeed’s Arsenal, which ran April 1–7, and Fools’ Rocketeer, which ran March 28–April 3, with in-game rewards. The distinction matters: the false announcement was not itself one of those event activities. See Garena’s follow-up and event details.
World of Warcraft’s fake patch notes
GameSpot’s roundup of World of Warcraft’s satirical patch notes included a “Deeper Cave Below the Bottom” raid, an Undermine DMV dungeon, and a “War Couples” system. These were jokes described in the roundup, not actual game features. The deliberately over-the-top names do the punchline work without requiring players to mistake them for a genuine update.

One real April 1 release that was not a prank
Calendar timing is not proof of a joke. PC Gamer corrected its earlier treatment of Age of Wonders 4’s Giant Kings expansion: it was a real release on April 1, 2025, not an April Fools’ gag. Its correction is a useful reminder to check a publisher’s announcement and release status before calling an April 1 launch fictional.

How to tell a prank from a real event or release
- Check the official follow-up. A publisher may clarify that an announcement was false while listing separate, real events—as Garena did for Delta Force.
- Look for playable access and an end date. Among Us and Overwatch 2 had temporary experiences, not merely joke trailers.
- Separate the promotion from the product. Dreams of Aether was a real game even though its free 24-hour window was an April Fools’ promotion.
- Do not infer fiction from the date. Age of Wonders 4: Giant Kings was genuinely released on April 1.
- Treat a roundup as a guide, not a substitute for status checks. A reported joke premise does not make every date-adjacent announcement a prank.
