If your Castr stream has audio but YouTube shows a black screen, first set the encoder’s video codec to H.264 (AVC) and its keyframe interval to 2 seconds. If the Castr preview is already black, investigate the source or encoder; if the preview shows video but YouTube does not, check that the output includes both audio and video tracks. For a prerecorded source, verify that the file is MP4.
Find where the picture disappears
Use Castr’s incoming-source preview and stream statistics to narrow down the fault before changing several settings at once. Castr’s dashboard can show bandwidth, viewers, bitrate, resolution, codecs and audio bitrate, while the preview displays the incoming source. These checks can help locate the problem, though the preview is not guaranteed to identify every fault. See Castr’s live-stream dashboard guidance.
- The Castr preview is black: start with the encoder output or source file. The video may not be reaching Castr in a usable format.
- The preview shows video, but YouTube is black: check the destination output and confirm the encoder is sending both video and audio tracks. Castr notes that some platforms reject streams that lack one of these tracks.
- The source is an uploaded recording: check the file type as a separate compatibility step.
Fix a black screen with audio
Castr’s March 18, 2026 troubleshooting guidance associates a black picture with audible sound with an incompatible video format. Set the encoder’s video codec to H.264 (AVC) and the keyframe interval to 2 seconds. These are Castr’s symptom-specific recommendations; changing bitrate or resolution is not a substitute for checking the codec and keyframe setting. Apply the settings in your encoder
Encoder menus differ, so look for the video encoder or output settings rather than relying on a particular menu path. Choose H.264/AVC for video and set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds. Then restart or reconnect the stream if your encoder requires it for settings to take effect, and check the Castr preview again.

If YouTube has audio but no video
Check the encoder’s output configuration for separate audio and video tracks. Make sure video is enabled and being sent alongside audio. If the Castr preview contains video but YouTube remains black, inspect the destination output and reconnect after correcting the track configuration.
Check a prerecorded video file
Castr’s video-upload guide says the service supports MP4 files only. If your source is another file type, use a supported MP4 source. An .mp4 extension alone does not establish that the video inside uses a compatible codec; if the picture is still black, check the encoder or source video format against the H.264 recommendation. Castr’s upload guide does not specify a complete transcoding recipe for every file.

Large uploads and upload interruptions
Castr’s guide says direct uploads are not resumable and recommends direct local upload for files under 5 GB. It describes multipart upload for files above 5 GB as coming soon; check the current guide for availability rather than assuming that feature is active. These upload-process details are not identified as causes of a black screen.
Use bitrate and resolution as supporting checks
Once the codec, keyframe interval and tracks are correct, review general encoder settings if the stream is unstable or the picture is still not reaching the destination. Castr’s March 18, 2026 troubleshooting article recommends H.264 video, AAC audio, CBR bitrate mode, a 2-second keyframe interval, 1920×1080 or 1280×720 resolution, and 30 fps—or 60 fps if the connection supports the higher bitrate. It gives 3,500–6,500 Kbps for 1080p video, 2,500–4,000 Kbps for 720p video, and 128 Kbps stereo audio.

Castr’s separate encoder configuration guide gives these bitrate ranges, which differ somewhat from the troubleshooting article’s 1080p recommendations. Treat them as guidance from that specific page, not as a single definitive bitrate prescription.

The same encoder guide recommends H.264 video, AAC or MP3 audio, 128 Kbps audio as preferred (not above 256 Kbps), CBR, and 2-second keyframes (not over 4 seconds). Because its ranges and the troubleshooting page’s 1080p range are not identical, avoid combining them into a supposedly exact universal target. Change bitrate or resolution when the symptoms point to instability or when your connection cannot sustain the selected output—not as the first fix for a codec-related black screen.

Troubleshoot persistent black video
- There is audio, but no picture anywhere: set H.264/AVC video and a 2-second keyframe interval; inspect the source and encoder output.
- Castr preview is visible, YouTube is black: verify that both media tracks are enabled and sent to the destination, then reconnect the corrected output.
- An uploaded recording is black: confirm it is MP4, then check the internal video format as well as the filename extension.
- The stream buffers, lags or drops: review bitrate, resolution, frame rate and connection capacity using the relevant Castr encoder guidance above.
- The signal path appears correct, but the issue continues: check Castr’s status page. It showed all services online in an update dated October 2, 2026 at 4:26 pm UTC; that timestamped snapshot does not establish current service or destination status.
