Yes. Once your video is uploaded and its Premiere is scheduled, YouTube describes the event as a timed release: the countdown begins at the selected time, then viewers watch the video together. You do not need to leave your computer on for the scheduled playback. Join from a device only if you want to take part in chat or moderation.
Why a scheduled Premiere doesn’t need your computer
A YouTube Premiere is a scheduled release of an uploaded video, not a live broadcast that you operate from your computer. YouTube’s instructions say the countdown starts at the scheduled time and viewers then watch the video together; they do not say the creator must stay online or keep a computer running for playback. That distinction matters: finish uploading the video and scheduling the Premiere before the event. YouTube also says you can create a Premiere while uploading from the YouTube app, so setup is not inherently computer-only.
What happens at the scheduled time
- Before the event, a public watch page is available to share. Viewers can set a reminder, comment, and chat.
- At the selected time, the chosen countdown begins. When it ends, viewers watch the video together in real time. They can rewind, but cannot skip ahead beyond the point that has played.
- Viewers can watch on a computer, iPhone, iPad, Android device, or mobile web.
- After the Premiere, the video remains on your channel as a regular upload, and viewers can use chat replay. You can review Premiere performance in YouTube Analytics.
When you should attend
Your attendance is optional for playback. If you want to greet viewers, answer questions, or moderate the chat, join the watch page from a device. YouTube recommends scheduling a Premiere at least 24 hours in advance so audiences around the world have an opportunity to see its thumbnail in their subscriptions feed. This is platform guidance, not a guarantee of views or performance.
Check these details before you leave
- Confirm the video upload is complete.
- Check that the intended date and time are selected.
- Confirm the event appears as scheduled on YouTube.
- Share the public watch page if you want viewers to find it beforehand.
- Decide whether you want to be present for chat; if not, no computer needs to stay on just for the scheduled playback.
An exception: Community Guidelines strike penalties
YouTube says an account with a Community Guidelines strike cannot publish a Premiere during the penalty period. The Premiere must be rescheduled after the freeze period. The normal scheduled workflow is not an unconditional guarantee that every event will publish under every account or platform condition.
