For screen-off listening, YouTube says you need to be signed in to the YouTube mobile app with an account that has Premium, then set Background Play to the option you want. If you run the channel, Live Control Room is where to check stream health and live audience metrics; viewers cannot use those creator-side tools.
Choose the kind of monitoring you need
“Monitoring” can mean keeping the video visible, listening with the screen locked, or checking how your broadcast is performing. These are different tasks, and the right option depends on whether you are a viewer or operate the channel.

YouTube documents these playback features and requirements in its Android guide to YouTube Premium benefits. They are not a guarantee that a particular live stream or phone will play without interruption.
Keep the video visible with picture-in-picture
Start the podcast in the YouTube Android app, then leave the app using your phone’s usual Home or app-switching control. If PiP is available for that content and enabled on your phone, YouTube can shrink the video to a floating window while you use another app. You can reposition the window or return to YouTube from it.

YouTube’s documented distinction is about content: PiP is available for non-music long-form content and Shorts on Android, while PiP for specified music content requires Premium. Android’s PiP setting location can vary with Android version and phone manufacturer.
Listen with the screen off
- Open YouTube and make sure you are signed in to the account that has an active YouTube Premium membership.
- In YouTube’s settings, open Background Play and choose the behavior you want. YouTube lists “Always on,” “Off,” and “Headphones or external speakers.”
- Start the live podcast, then leave YouTube or lock the screen. If you selected “Headphones or external speakers,” playback is limited to when external audio output is in use.
YouTube says background playback requires Premium in its Android background-play troubleshooting guidance and documents those setting choices in its Premium benefits guide. Headphones are optional for “Always on”; connecting them does not remove the Premium requirement.

If you operate the stream, check Live Control Room
For a channel owner or operator, YouTube’s Live Control Room provides stream-health information and real-time metrics. YouTube identifies concurrent viewers, stream duration, live chat messages, and likes among the live figures available. Open the Live Control Room for the stream you are running and use its stream-health and metrics views while it is live.
Do not treat the live view as identical to post-stream Analytics. YouTube says Analytics data is processed and despammed and measures different information from Live Control Room. Its guide to live-stream metrics on Android describes the creator-side monitoring options.

Troubleshoot playback that stops
If the stream pauses when you switch apps or lock your phone, work through these checks. Android labels and settings paths differ by manufacturer and OS version, so use your phone’s app-specific settings rather than assuming one route applies to every device.
- Check Background Play in YouTube. Set it to “Always on” for screen-off listening, or use “Headphones or external speakers” only if you want playback limited to an external audio output. “Off” will not continue playback in the background.
- Confirm the right Premium account is active. YouTube’s documented screen-off/background playback requirement is Premium on the account signed in to the mobile app.
- Update YouTube. YouTube includes checking the app version in its troubleshooting guidance.
- Check Android’s background data and notification settings for YouTube. YouTube flags both as possible causes of background-play problems. The exact labels and locations vary by device.
- Rule out audio conflicts and connection trouble. Another app playing audio may interrupt YouTube, and an unstable network can disrupt a live stream. Check whether another app has taken over audio and whether your connection is stable.
- Restart YouTube or the phone. YouTube recommends restarting the app or device as a troubleshooting step.
Samsung publishes separate Galaxy-specific background-play guidance for India, last updated February 28, 2025. Its instructions apply to Galaxy devices; they are not a universal Android settings path.
