Run one Icecast server and use Liquidsoap to feed it two separate playlist-driven streams: one to an Icecast mountpoint such as /hindi, the other to /punjabi. Listeners choose the matching URL, while you manage each channel’s music and output independently. A VPS setup can operate continuously, but 24/7 availability depends on the VPS, network, process supervision, and recovery plan—not just Icecast and Liquidsoap.
How the two-channel setup works
Icecast serves the streams; each distinct stream path is a mountpoint. One Icecast server can carry multiple broadcasts on separate mountpoints. Liquidsoap provides the audio by reading playlists and sending each channel to its own Icecast output. The Icecast Project describes multiple streams as mountpoints in its Basic Setup documentation. Liquidsoap’s Quickstart explains playlists, Icecast outputs, and multiple audio feeds from one instance.
- Hindi channel: a Hindi playlist source sent to
/hindi. - Punjabi channel: a separate Punjabi playlist source sent to
/punjabi. - Listeners: each listener opens the URL for the desired mountpoint; the channels are distinct streams, not a single stream that changes language automatically.
Use simple mountpoint names without spaces or unusual characters. Follow the selected audio format’s conventions; some formats and clients work better with a format-aware extension. Icecast’s setup documentation also describes playlist links such as .m3u for compatible players.
Prepare the VPS, server, and music
- Install Icecast and Liquidsoap. Use packages and instructions appropriate to your VPS operating system and the software versions you intend to run. The linked documentation describes configuration concepts, not a current, distribution-specific installation recipe.
- Configure Icecast’s listening address and port. Make the service reachable to listeners as intended, and configure the VPS firewall and hosting network accordingly.
- Replace default credentials before exposing the server. Set strong, unique source and administrator passwords in Icecast’s configuration and use the source credentials only in Liquidsoap. Liquidsoap’s Quickstart warns that default public-server credentials can permit unwanted source or administrator access.
- Organize the audio. Create separate directories or playlists for Hindi and Punjabi tracks. Check that playlist entries point to files Liquidsoap can read and that the files use formats supported by your chosen output configuration.
- Confirm music rights before launch. Technical streaming software does not grant permission to broadcast recordings. Requirements can depend on the recordings, rights holders, repertoire, territories where listeners are located, and how the service operates. Confirm the applicable permissions with rights holders or licensing bodies for the relevant territories.
Configure two independent Liquidsoap outputs
Create one playlist source per language and one Icecast output per source. Each output needs the VPS host, Icecast port, source credentials, audio encoding, and a unique mountpoint. The Liquidsoap documentation’s Icecast and Shoutcast streaming guide shows the relevant output concepts, including distinct mountpoints and encoded outputs. It is development documentation, so check its syntax against the Liquidsoap version installed on your VPS.

- Point the Hindi output only at
/hindiand the Punjabi output only at/punjabi. - Keep the playlists, metadata, and output settings separate so editing one channel does not unintentionally change the other.
- Choose an audio format and bitrate suitable for your listeners and clients. The format and bitrate also determine bandwidth use; the cited documentation does not prescribe one setting for every audience or VPS.
- Decide how each playlist behaves when it reaches its end or a file cannot be played. Test both cases instead of assuming playback will recover as desired.
Liquidsoap can run multiple audio feeds from one instance, as its Quickstart notes. Whether to use one process or multiple processes is an operational choice: consider which arrangement you can monitor, restart, and maintain reliably.
Start, test, and monitor both streams
- Run Icecast and Liquidsoap under a service manager or another supervision method appropriate to the VPS, with restart behavior configured deliberately.
- From outside the VPS, open the Hindi listener URL using the hostname or IP, Icecast port, and
/hindimountpoint. Repeat with/punjabi. Confirm that each URL plays the intended channel. - Check audio format, playback, and metadata for both outputs. Test with the listener apps and devices your audience is likely to use.
- Watch Liquidsoap and Icecast logs and verify that both sources remain connected. Plan monitoring and alerts for process exits, source disconnections, and unavailable listener endpoints.
- Test recovery deliberately: stop or disconnect a source in a controlled window, observe what listeners hear, and confirm the restart or fallback behavior you configured.
Liquidsoap documents wrapping a playlist source with mksafe to make a fallible source infallible. Icecast also supports a mount-specific fallback mount, subject to matching streaming format; see its configuration documentation. These mechanisms can help with source continuity, but they do not guarantee that the VPS, network, or full end-to-end service will stay online.

Estimate bandwidth and capacity
Capacity depends on the encoded bitrates and the number of listeners active at the same time. Liquidsoap’s Quickstart states that more listeners require more bandwidth, but the documentation does not provide a VPS sizing benchmark. Estimate demand from the combined listener traffic for both channels: encoded bitrate multiplied by listener time, converted from bits to bytes, with extra allowance for protocol overhead. Include both channels’ audiences, since their traffic adds together. Validate the estimate against the VPS provider’s network limits and actual usage; do not treat a generic listener count or server size as guaranteed.
Troubleshooting
- A mountpoint does not appear or play: check that Liquidsoap is connecting to the intended Icecast host and port, the source credentials match, and the configured mountpoint spelling is identical at both ends.
- Both URLs play the same language: inspect the playlist-source-to-output mapping and ensure each output has its own mountpoint and source.
- Listeners hear silence or playback stops: check file paths and permissions, playlist contents, supported file formats, Liquidsoap logs, and whether the source remains connected to Icecast.
- Some players cannot open a stream: verify the output format and mountpoint naming conventions for those clients. Consider whether a format-aware extension or a compatible
.m3ulink is appropriate. - Playback drops as more listeners join: compare concurrent listener traffic with available network capacity and account for both streams and protocol overhead. Liquidsoap’s guidance is qualitative; test with your real workload.
- A fallback does not take over: verify the mount-specific fallback configuration and that its format matches the affected stream, then test the failure case while monitoring logs.
- Unexpected source or admin access: replace default credentials, restrict access where appropriate, and review Icecast and VPS exposure settings.
What a VPS does—and does not—guarantee
A VPS keeps the streaming processes off your personal computer, but continuous availability still requires operational planning: process supervision, monitoring, network capacity, playlist health, and recovery procedures. Neither the cited Icecast nor Liquidsoap documentation promises end-to-end 24/7 uptime. The documentation also does not establish current VPS package commands, provider pricing, or which VPS size will support a particular audience.
