How to Keep Podcast Episode Metadata with a YouTube Live Playlist

YouTube podcast playlists, RSS episodes, live streams, and archives use related but separate metadata. Here’s how to choose the source of truth and review each live archive.

Keep podcast metadata and YouTube live-stream metadata as separate records: YouTube treats a podcast as a playlist, each episode as a video, and a live stream as its own event. RSS can supply episode details, but adding a live archive to a podcast playlist does not automatically sync its title, description, or date with the RSS feed. Set the source of truth for each episode, then review the archive in YouTube Studio after the stream.

Understand which YouTube record holds each detail

  • Podcast: A playlist representing the show. It has its own title, description, visibility, thumbnail, and episode order.
  • Episode: A video with its own title, description, and other video details. RSS ingestion can create episode videos and supply their details.
  • Live stream: A separate event with its own title, description, and settings. Reusing a past stream copies that stream’s settings; it does not pull metadata from the podcast RSS feed.
  • Archive: The video YouTube creates from a completed stream. It can be added to a playlist, but playlist membership is not documented as metadata synchronization.

This distinction matters if a live recording is also meant to count as a podcast episode: playlist placement organizes the video, while its video details still need to be checked independently.

Choose the source of truth for episode metadata

For an RSS-distributed show

Keep the episode title, description, and release date correct in the RSS feed before YouTube ingests the episode. YouTube can create a video for each selected feed episode and automatically upload new episodes. RSS ingestion is available only in select countries or regions, so check availability for your account and location in YouTube’s RSS-feed guidance.

Avoid editing an RSS-managed episode’s details in Studio if you want the feed to remain authoritative. YouTube Help says: “If you change episode details in YouTube Studio, we’ll block future edits to that episode made within your RSS feed.” Change the feed instead when the episode should continue to follow RSS updates. This rule is about episode details; podcast-level settings remain editable in Studio.

For a live-first episode

Set the live event’s title and description when you create or schedule it, then check the resulting archive video after the event. If that archive is a full-length episode, add the existing video to the podcast playlist and verify its details there. If it is a special event, discussion, or other material that is not a full episode, keep it in a regular live-events playlist.

Set up live metadata without assuming RSS will fill it in

  1. Create or schedule the stream in YouTube Studio. Enter the event’s title and description as live-stream metadata. These fields belong to the stream, not automatically to a corresponding RSS episode.
  2. If reusing a prior stream, inspect the copied details. YouTube Help states: “The new stream will copy the previous stream’s metadata, settings, and the stream key.” Review the title, description, and other copied settings for the new event. Reuse copies stream-to-stream; it is not RSS-to-stream synchronization. See YouTube’s live-stream settings guidance.
  3. After the stream, open the archive’s video details. Confirm the title, description, visibility, and any other episode information that matters before treating the archive as the published podcast episode.
  4. Place the video in the right playlist. Add a full episode to the podcast playlist if appropriate. Use a regular playlist for live-event archives that are not episodes.

Organize the podcast and archive playlists

YouTube recommends that a podcast playlist contain full-length episodes—not clips, episodes from different shows, or videos from other channels. Give the podcast playlist the actual show name and a useful show description; do not use its playlist-level text as a substitute for an individual episode’s video title or description. YouTube’s podcast setup guidance explains podcast and episode organization.

For an episodic show, YouTube recommends newest-to-oldest order. For serial storytelling, it recommends oldest-to-newest order. A regular playlist can hold a separate series of live-event archives. Studio’s playlist controls allow creators to add videos and edit playlist titles, descriptions, visibility, and ordering. YouTube Help lists limits of 150 characters for a playlist title and 5,000 characters for a playlist description; those limits apply to the playlist, not to episode video details. See YouTube’s playlist guidance.

Know how RSS dates and playlist ordering behave

For RSS-uploaded episodes, YouTube says playlist order uses the RSS release date when one is present; otherwise it uses the YouTube publish date. YouTube does not verify the RSS release date. Different YouTube surfaces may show the feed release date or YouTube’s publish date, and changing a release date in Studio does not change the RSS feed date. Keep the intended date correct in the feed when RSS is the source of truth. For a live archive that stands in as an episode, verify its displayed details and position after adding it to the podcast playlist.

Check the archive and protect against incomplete captures

YouTube says live-stream archives are uploaded by default after events and can be organized, including with highlights, into playlists. Streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived; YouTube recommends keeping a local recording as a backup and warns that streams over 12 hours may not be captured at all. These archive behaviors are separate from podcast RSS metadata. Review YouTube’s live-stream archiving guidance after an event, especially before relying on an archive as the only copy of an episode.

Use a podcast host only after checking its workflow

YouTube notes that some podcast hosting platforms offer YouTube distribution and advises creators to check with their host. That makes a host a possible route for distribution, not proof that it will synchronize metadata onto a live stream or its eventual archive. Confirm that a specific provider supports the exact workflow you need. See YouTube’s podcast hosting guidance.

Common metadata problems and fixes

  • RSS edits stop appearing on YouTube: Check whether episode details were edited in Studio. If so, YouTube says future RSS edits to that episode are blocked; make subsequent changes in Studio or use the feed as the source of truth for episodes that have not been overridden.
  • A reused live stream has the wrong title or description: Reusing a stream copies its previous metadata and settings. Edit and verify the new event’s details before it starts.
  • A live archive appears in the podcast playlist but has different details: Playlist placement does not establish metadata synchronization. Review and update the archive video’s own details in Studio.
  • An episode is out of order or shows an unexpected date: Check whether YouTube is using the RSS release date or the YouTube publish date, and whether the show is episodic or serial. Studio date edits do not change the feed’s release date.
  • A long stream has no complete archive: YouTube warns that streams over 12 hours may not be captured. Keep a local recording as a backup and check the archive after the event.

Or let it run in the cloud
