High-resolution playlist files do not, by themselves, prove why an FFmpeg stream is dropping frames. First find out whether FFmpeg is dropping frames during frame-rate conversion, failing to encode in real time, or sending a stream YouTube flags as unhealthy. Compare FFmpeg’s logs and progress with the actual input and output settings, system and upload measurements, and YouTube’s stream-health messages before changing the setup.
First identify which frames are dropping
“Dropped frames” can describe different problems. FFmpeg may drop or duplicate frames as part of output frame-rate conversion; its processing may also fail to keep pace with real time. Separately, YouTube’s stream-health diagnostics can report configuration issues. These symptoms call for different checks, so do not treat the playlist’s resolution as a diagnosis.
- Save the exact FFmpeg version and full command. Redact the stream key, private URLs, and other credentials before sharing them.
- Keep FFmpeg’s complete console output, including warnings and per-output progress. Note any drop or duplicate counters and whether processing speed stays at or above real time.
- Record YouTube’s stream-health status and messages for the same test period.
A specific root cause cannot be established without the command, input details, logs, machine utilization, upload measurements, and YouTube diagnostics.
Confirm what kind of playlist FFmpeg is reading
“Playlist” may mean a concat demuxer list of local files, an HLS input, or another source. These are different input arrangements. Do not infer that a playlist uses FFmpeg’s HLS output features simply because it is called a playlist: the HLS muxer’s documented multi-variant output concerns creating streams, not proving that high-resolution input files cause frame drops.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Inspect representative inputs
For several files in the playlist, note resolution, frame rate, codec, and timestamps. Check whether the files share the same properties and whether timestamps progress as expected across file boundaries. Compare those facts with the stream’s configured output rather than assuming every file is being processed identically.
Check frame-rate conversion and option placement
FFmpeg’s output frame-rate options can drop or duplicate frames to reach a requested rate. Option placement matters: many options apply to the next input or output. Review the actual command to see where any -r option, frame-rate filter, synchronization setting, or timestamp option applies. Compare each input’s frame rate with the intended output frame rate and the frames FFmpeg reports processing.

Do not add or move a frame-rate option as a guess. If you test a change, alter one setting at a time and compare the resulting FFmpeg counters and YouTube health status.
Check whether processing and upload keep up in real time
Measure rather than assume that high resolution is overwhelming the computer or connection. Check FFmpeg’s progress speed alongside system utilization during a representative stream. Separately measure available upload capacity and compare it with the stream’s configured bitrate. A speed test alone does not establish that the stream remained stable throughout an event, so observe the test stream as it runs.

YouTube recommends choosing a quality reliable for the available connection, testing before going live, and monitoring stream health and messages during the event. Its guidance says tests should include audio and movement similar to the planned stream. YouTube’s live streaming troubleshooting guidance explains these checks.
Compare the output settings with YouTube’s recommendations
Check codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, rate control, and keyframe interval together. YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1; recommends CBR; supports frame rates up to 60 fps; and recommends a two-second keyframe frequency, not exceeding four seconds. These are recommendations, not guarantees of stability for a particular machine, connection, or source. Consult YouTube’s current encoder settings and bitrate table, since the recommended bitrate varies by codec, resolution, and frame rate.

YouTube’s Live Streaming API exposes stream-health status, configuration issues, and the configured inbound resolution and frame rate. Compare those details with FFmpeg’s output settings and logs from the same time window. An API health result can identify a configuration concern, but it does not replace checking FFmpeg processing speed, system utilization, or upload conditions. Run a controlled test before changing the whole setup
- Choose a representative playlist segment and test duration; include audio and motion similar to the planned stream.
- Record the input files’ properties, the output profile, FFmpeg version and command, processing speed, drop/duplicate counters, system utilization, and upload measurement.
- Start a test stream and capture YouTube’s stream-health messages and configured inbound resolution and frame rate.
- Change one variable, such as output resolution or frame rate, then repeat the same test with the same content and duration.
- Compare FFmpeg’s counters and speed, resource use, and YouTube health results. If a lower resolution or frame rate removes the drops, that is evidence about this setup—not a universal fix.
When comparing profiles, hold content and duration constant. Track input and output resolution and frame rate, codec and bitrate, FFmpeg speed and resource use, FFmpeg drop/duplicate counters, and YouTube health status.
Troubleshooting: symptom, check, and next step
| What you observe | What to check | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg reports drops or duplicates around a requested output rate | Input and output frame rates; placement of -r, frame-rate filters, synchronization, and timestamp options |
Verify which input or output each option affects; test one frame-rate change and compare counters. |
| FFmpeg processing speed falls below real time | Progress speed and system utilization while the stream runs | Test a lower output resolution or frame rate, one change at a time; use the results to identify whether processing capacity is implicated. |
| YouTube reports a configuration issue or unhealthy stream | Configured inbound resolution and frame rate, codec, bitrate, CBR behavior, and keyframe interval | Compare with YouTube’s current encoder guidance and repeat a test stream. |
| Upload measurement appears insufficient for the configured output | Available upload capacity and configured bitrate during a representative test | Choose a quality reliable for the connection and monitor stream health during the test. |
| The playlist crosses files with different properties | Resolution, frame rate, codec, and timestamps for representative files and transitions | Test a consistent segment and compare with a segment that crosses the transition to isolate the difference. |
