If a firewall is closing your encoder’s ordinary RTMP connection to YouTube, switch the encoder to YouTube’s current RTMPS URL and ask the network administrator to allow the encoder’s outbound TCP connection to that ingestion host on port 443. RTMPS wraps RTMP in TLS; the correct hostname matters for SNI authentication. Do not guess a server address or request inbound port forwarding for a stream started from your encoder.
First, confirm this is an RTMP/firewall problem
A disconnect alone does not prove a firewall is responsible. A timeout or TLS error can point to a protocol or endpoint mismatch; a stream that starts and later drops may instead involve intermittent network loss, security inspection, VPN behavior, or insufficient upload capacity. Check the encoder’s error and logs alongside YouTube’s stream health before requesting a network change.
YouTube’s official guidance says RTMPS uses port 443 and requires the server hostname for SNI authentication. The encoder must support RTMPS. YouTube’s ingestion protocol guide describes the supported protocols and connection requirements.
Switch the encoder to YouTube RTMPS
- Open YouTube Live Control Room. Locate the current stream’s connection details and reveal the RTMPS URL. YouTube may show ordinary RTMP by default; use the interface’s RTMPS option rather than reusing or guessing a generic URL. See YouTube’s instructions for setting up a live stream encoder.
- Update the encoder’s server field. Copy the complete RTMPS URL, including its host and path, into the encoder’s server or ingest URL field. Confirm the scheme begins with
rtmps://. If the encoder requires an explicit port, use TCP 443 as YouTube specifies. - Update the stream key if needed. Enter the current key from Live Control Room in the encoder’s stream-key field. Treat the key as a password: do not share it in a support ticket or public log.
- Start a test stream. Check the encoder’s connection status, YouTube’s stream health, and the time of any error. Confirm that the encoder is actually attempting RTMPS, not falling back to ordinary RTMP.
Ask for the right firewall change
For a stream initiated by an encoder, the request is an outbound allow rule from the encoder device or network to the current YouTube ingestion hostname over TCP port 443. It is not an inbound port-forwarding request. Give the administrator the ingestion hostname copied from Live Control Room, the port and protocol, the affected device, the time of the failure, and relevant firewall or proxy log details. Ask them to check firewall, proxy, or secure-web-gateway logs for a connection being denied, reset, or terminated. Port 443 is commonly used for HTTPS, but that does not mean every device or destination is allowed through every network’s policies.
If a managed network permits destination-based rules, request permission for the specific current endpoint rather than a broad exception. Do not send your stream key to the administrator; the hostname and timestamp are usually the useful connection details.

Troubleshoot by symptom

Work through other likely causes
Firewall, proxy, VPN, or endpoint security
Local firewall or antivirus software, VPN software, and network security inspection can interfere with the encoder-to-ingest connection. OBS includes these among possible sources of connection problems. Check their logs and, only where policy permits, make a controlled comparison with the relevant protection or VPN changed temporarily. Do not leave security protection disabled as a permanent workaround. OBS troubleshooting guidance covers these checks.
Upload capacity and shared bandwidth
A permitted connection can still be unstable if the upload link cannot sustain the stream. YouTube recommends about 20% upload headroom beyond the total stream bitrate; count both primary and backup streams if you use dual ingestion. Shared office bandwidth may reduce what is available to your encoder. Check the current resolution and bitrate targets in YouTube’s recommended encoder settings rather than treating one bitrate as universal. OBS notes that dropped frames can indicate an unstable connection or insufficient capacity.

Compare networks carefully
If policy allows, test from another permitted network and record the exact time and encoder error. A successful test elsewhere can help narrow the issue to a network path, but it does not by itself identify which firewall, proxy, or other device caused the original failure. Share the endpoint hostname, port, timestamp, and relevant logs with the administrator.
Retest before the next broadcast
- Confirm the encoder uses the current RTMPS URL and stream key.
- Check that the outbound TCP 443 connection reaches the specified ingestion hostname.
- Run a test ahead of the event and note any encoder error and YouTube stream-health warning.
- Review upload capacity, VPN or security logs, and shared-network conditions if frames drop or the stream disconnects after starting.
YouTube also supports HLS and DASH, but a protocol change is not a documented way to evade a firewall. Choose a protocol only if your encoder, stream requirements, and network administrator support it; see YouTube’s ingestion protocol guide.
