A black screen between sermon videos usually means the picture is disappearing somewhere in the playback chain: the playlist or source transition, the encoder, or the connection sending the stream to YouTube. The symptom alone does not identify the cause. First compare the encoder’s local output with what viewers see; that helps locate which part of the chain to inspect.
Find out where the picture disappears
Check the same moment in the local encoder preview or recording and in the viewer-facing live stream. YouTube recommends checking the encoder output, routed audio and video sources, encoder errors and CPU load, and a local archive when investigating stream-quality problems.
- Black in the local preview or recording: Start with the selected source, scene, playlist, or video transition. The problem is already present before you can attribute it to the connection reaching viewers.
- Healthy locally, but black for viewers: Check the encoder’s status, YouTube’s live dashboard, and the connection carrying the stream. This comparison narrows the likely fault boundary; it does not by itself prove a particular component has failed.
- Different results on different devices: Compare the live dashboard and archive as well as the encoder output. A report from one viewer alone does not establish that the stream is black for everyone.
Note the time and duration of each gap, and whether it happens at every video boundary or unpredictably. That pattern can help distinguish a repeatable playlist or transition issue from an intermittent encoder or connection problem.
If the local output is black
Check the playlist and clip boundaries
- Confirm that the intended sermon videos are in the playlist and in the expected order.
- Inspect the point where one clip ends and the next begins. If the black interval recurs at the same boundary, focus on the source or playlist transition rather than assuming the network is responsible.
- Check that each file has finished processing and is ready to play. Some automated-playlist services include file readiness and stream-health messages among their troubleshooting checks; that does not establish that an unprocessed clip is the cause in your particular setup.
Check the selected video source
Verify that the scene or source used for the live output is the one intended to play the playlist. If the local preview is black during the gap, inspect that source and its transition settings in the software you use. The exact controls and transition behavior depend on that software, so there is no universal setting to change based on the symptom alone.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
If local output is healthy but viewers see black
Read the encoder and YouTube status
Look for encoder errors, unusually high CPU load, and health warnings in YouTube’s live dashboard at the time of the gap. YouTube recommends these checks when stream quality problems are reported. If you have a local recording, compare the corresponding moment with the live stream to see whether the missing picture is also present in the saved output.
Check dropped frames and the outbound connection
OBS describes dropped frames as an indication that the connection to the remote server is unstable or cannot sustain the configured bitrate. Check its dropped-frame status and whether the encoder disconnected when the picture vanished. If dropped frames or disconnects coincide with the gap, investigate the outbound connection and the configured bitrate. Reducing bitrate may help when the connection cannot sustain the current setting, but it is not a repair for an unstable connection’s underlying cause.

Do not change resolution, bitrate, or other encoder settings blindly: the available evidence does not identify a universal setting that causes black intervals between videos. Use the encoder’s and platform’s status information to guide any adjustment, then check whether the gap recurs.
Use the YouTube archive as a comparison
YouTube’s encoder guidance says the encoder sends the live feed and that stopping the encoder stops sending content. YouTube also says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. If an archive is available, check the exact time of the reported gap and compare it with the local recording and live dashboard. The archive can help establish what was sent, but the 12-hour archive guidance is not an explanation for a black transition between individual videos.

Common causes and what to check first
| What you observe | First checks |
|---|---|
| Black in the local preview and local recording | Selected source or scene, playlist order, clip boundary, and whether each file is ready to play. |
| Local output is clear, but the YouTube stream is black | Encoder errors, CPU load, YouTube live-dashboard health, and the local archive around the gap. |
| The gap coincides with dropped frames or disconnection | Outbound connection stability and whether the connection can sustain the configured bitrate. |
| The gap occurs at every video boundary | Playlist order, file readiness, and the source’s transition behavior at those boundaries. |
| The gap is intermittent or affects only some viewers | Record the timing, compare the encoder output with the dashboard and archive, and establish whether the issue is present for all viewers. |
When to consider a different playback setup
If checks point to a fragile local continuous-playback setup, cloud playout is one alternative workflow: it can run recurring schedules and a 24/7 sermon channel without a dedicated local streaming PC. That changes the playback arrangement; it is not a guaranteed fix for a source, encoder, or connection problem. Compare any service’s scheduling, playlist and stream-health features, compatibility with your YouTube destination and website embed, and current terms before switching.

If the issue is that a local computer must stay on to play uploaded sermon videos continuously, StreamNeo is a YouTube-only cloud service: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops the uploaded videos from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. It streams the files as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, and the monthly option is $9.99 per month. This is an alternative to local playout, not a diagnosis or guaranteed cure for every black-screen cause.
