You can run OBS on a rented Windows VPS and send a continuous broadcast to YouTube by creating a stream in YouTube Studio, connecting OBS with the stream’s server URL and key, and keeping the VPS—and OBS—running. The encoder setup is only part of the job: check that the virtual machine can sustain your chosen video settings and outbound traffic, then test how it behaves after interruptions before relying on it around the clock.
What you need before you start
- A YouTube channel that is eligible to live stream and access to YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room.
- A rented Windows VPS with remote access, enough sustained CPU or compatible hardware encoding for your OBS workload, and outbound network capacity for the chosen bitrate.
- OBS Studio installed on the VPS, plus the video and audio sources you plan to broadcast.
- A way to monitor the VPS, OBS, and YouTube stream health—and a recovery plan you have tested.
There is no universal VPS size established for this workload. A machine that meets OBS’s baseline requirements may still be inadequate for a particular resolution, frame rate, encoder, or scene. OBS lists Windows 10 or Windows 11 and a DirectX 10.1-compatible GPU among its basic Windows requirements, while cautioning that compatibility alone does not guarantee adequate streaming performance. Create the YouTube broadcast and get its connection details
- Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Create a stream if this is your first encoder broadcast, or select an existing or scheduled stream. YouTube notes that prior stream settings may load again.
- Find the encoder connection information. Copy the server URL and stream key shown for the stream. The key is sensitive: anyone who has it may be able to send video to your broadcast, so do not publish it, paste it into public support requests, or share it unnecessarily.
- Keep the Live Control Room open. You will return to it to check the preview and stream health. YouTube’s encoder workflow is documented at Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
Install and configure OBS on the Windows VPS
Check the actual virtual machine, not just its advertised label
Connect to the VPS using the provider’s remote-access method and install OBS Studio. Confirm the installed Windows version and whether the virtual machine exposes a compatible graphics device and drivers. A virtual GPU or hardware encoder should not be assumed to exist merely because the VPS is described as a Windows machine.
OBS documents support for NVIDIA NVENC, AMD AMF, and Intel Quick Sync subject to compatibility. Whether those options appear and work on a VPS depends on the hardware and driver access the provider exposes. See OBS’s hardware encoding guidance. If a compatible encoder is unavailable, software encoding may be an option, but verify its sustained performance with the workload you intend to stream.

Connect OBS to YouTube
- In OBS, open Settings and select Stream.
- Choose YouTube as the service if the current OBS interface offers it. Otherwise choose a custom service and enter the server URL from YouTube’s Live Control Room.
- Paste the stream key into OBS. Treat it as a secret, and do not include it in screenshots or logs you share publicly.
- Select Apply and OK, then build the scene or playlist you intend to broadcast. Confirm that the preview shows the intended video and that audio meters respond if the stream should include audio.
Choose video, audio, and connection settings
Use YouTube’s current encoder settings table for the target resolution, frame rate, and codec, then make sure the VPS can sustain those settings. YouTube recommends RTMPS and specifies constant bitrate (CBR), up to 60 frames per second, and AAC or MP3 audio for RTMP/RTMPS. Its recommended keyframe interval is 2 seconds; do not exceed 4 seconds. The published bitrate range varies by codec, resolution, and frame rate, so do not treat one bitrate as universal. For example, YouTube lists H.264 at 1080p30 as 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended; other codecs and frame rates have different recommendations. Check the live table at YouTube’s encoder settings page before configuring the broadcast.
- Resolution and frame rate: Match the source and scene to what the VPS can encode continuously. Higher resolution or frame rate increases processing and network demands.
- Encoder: Use a hardware encoder only if OBS detects a compatible device and driver on the VPS. Otherwise test the available software encoder under sustained load.
- Bitrate: Stay within YouTube’s current recommendation for your selected codec and output mode, and leave headroom for network variation rather than relying on a connection that only just matches the target rate.
- Keyframes and rate control: Use CBR and a 2-second keyframe interval as recommended by YouTube; do not exceed the stated 4-second maximum.
- Audio: Choose AAC or MP3 for an RTMP/RTMPS stream and verify levels during the test, including any quiet passages.
- Protocol: Prefer RTMPS where the encoder connection supports it, as YouTube recommends.
Start the stream and verify it in YouTube
- Start the encoder by selecting Start Streaming in OBS.
- Return to the Live Control Room. Wait for the preview and inspect the stream-health messages before treating the broadcast as ready.
- For a scheduled broadcast, use the Live Control Room’s Go live action when the preview is ready. Starting OBS sends the encoder feed; it does not necessarily make a scheduled event public by itself.
- Watch a representative test long enough to check moving video, audio, dropped frames or health warnings, and whether the VPS remains responsive. YouTube advises testing before going live and monitoring the stream’s health and messages.
Make the VPS operationally reliable
A 24/7 stream depends on more than OBS settings. A VPS may restart for maintenance, lose network access, run out of resources, or stop OBS after a Windows or application failure. The reviewed platform guidance does not establish a universal recipe for automatic OBS startup or recovery across providers, so test the actual machine and provider configuration you choose.

Test the failure cases deliberately
- Close OBS and confirm whether your chosen startup method brings it back and reconnects successfully.
- Restart Windows and reboot the VPS; verify whether OBS resumes without someone signing in manually.
- Simulate or observe a brief network interruption and confirm whether OBS reconnects and YouTube receives a healthy feed again.
- Check behavior after a Windows update, OBS update, or VPS maintenance restart before allowing unattended operation.
- Monitor CPU, memory, encoding warnings, outbound traffic, and YouTube health messages during an extended test.
Do not assume that a stream has recovered just because the VPS is reachable. Confirm that OBS is sending, the Live Control Room preview is present, and the broadcast is in the intended state. Recovery behavior depends on the VPS provider and how Windows and OBS are configured.
Understand what “24/7” means for YouTube archives
A channel can provide continuously available programming by keeping a broadcast going, but that does not mean YouTube will preserve a single unbroken archive indefinitely. YouTube’s encoder setup guide says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. It does not make that same promise for streams longer than 12 hours. If retaining an archive matters, check YouTube’s current guidance and verify the behavior for your broadcast before relying on a continuous stream as the recording.

Troubleshoot common setup problems

Estimate the real cost and compare the right things
A rented VPS replaces the need to keep a local computer powered for encoding, but it is not automatically cheaper or more reliable than a streaming service. Estimate the VPS charge for continuous use alongside any bandwidth or transfer charges, then compare the total with the alternative that fits your needs. No specific provider price, guaranteed bandwidth, VPS capacity, or recovery service is established here.
- Sustained encoding performance at your target resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity.
- Whether compatible GPU encoding and drivers are actually available to your Windows VPS.
- Outbound bandwidth capacity, transfer caps, and any fair-use terms.
- Remote access, uptime terms, reboot controls, and available recovery mechanisms.
- Total recurring cost for the required continuous bitrate and operating period.
