To change sermon videos without ending a church’s YouTube live stream, keep OBS and the YouTube live event connected, then switch the video in OBS. Prepare the next video as a scene or media source, rehearse the transition, and monitor YouTube’s preview plus the outgoing picture and audio. A scene change is the practical way to change what viewers see; it is not a guarantee of a perfectly uninterrupted transition on every computer or network.
Prepare the sermon videos in OBS before the service
OBS sends a composed output to YouTube. Scenes are layouts; sources are the video files and other elements in those layouts. Prepare and check each clip before going live so the operator can change the program output without stopping the encoder.
Option 1: Make a dedicated scene for each video
Add each sermon clip as a Media Source in its own scene. This is usually easier to rehearse and cue, and each scene can retain a consistent layout or include its own overlays and other sources. OBS supports hotkeys for switching to a specific scene, so an operator can use a regular keyboard; a macro keypad is optional.
Option 2: Change the media source in one scene
Keep one scene and change the file used by its Media Source for each transition. This keeps the scene list simpler, but the operator must confirm the selected file and its playback state each time. Choose the approach that fits the number of clips, the volunteer’s familiarity with OBS, and whether videos need different layouts.

Check source and playback settings
OBS Media Source supports local video formats including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM. Check the selected file and audio, then rehearse relevant controls such as restarting playback when a source becomes active, looping, hiding the source when playback ends, and closing the file when inactive. Set these according to the clip and the way it will be cued.
Switch videos while keeping the YouTube event live
- Prepare and rehearse the scenes. In OBS, add each clip as a Media Source in its dedicated scene, or prepare the single scene and source you will update. Verify the correct file, audio, and playback behavior.
- Connect OBS to the existing YouTube live event. Use that event’s YouTube Live server URL and stream key in the encoder. Treat the stream key as a credential: YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Use the key assigned to the event; reset it only when necessary, and update OBS if YouTube generates a replacement.
- Leave the encoder and event running. Changing the sermon video is not a reason to stop sending content from OBS or end the YouTube event.
- At the cue, switch the OBS program output. Select the prepared scene for the next video, or change the active media source using the controls you rehearsed. OBS hotkeys can switch to a specific scene.
- Watch what viewers receive. Check YouTube Live Control Room’s preview before service and monitor the outgoing picture and audio during it. YouTube also recommends checking that the event is accessible on channel and watch pages and checking stream quality.
- End the event when the service is over. Follow YouTube’s normal ending steps: end the stream in Live Control Room and stop sending content from the encoder. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived.
Why changing the OBS output avoids ending the event
YouTube receives the feed sent by the encoder, while OBS controls the video in that feed. Keeping the YouTube connection and encoder session active while switching the OBS scene changes the content without treating the change as the end of the event. YouTube and OBS document these separate roles, but neither guarantees that every transition will be seamless on every setup. Rehearsal and monitoring matter.

Test stream recovery separately from video changes
YouTube recommends testing encoder failover by stopping the primary encoder or unplugging its Ethernet cable and confirming that the player rolls over to the backup. Do this as a planned test, not as the method for changing sermon videos during worship.
