What OBS playlist automation can do
OBS’s VLC Video source is the documented way to play multiple media files as a playlist. It relies on VLC libraries, so VLC must be installed; for 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC. A regular Media Source plays an individual file rather than a multi-file playlist. OBS lists MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF and WebM video formats, and MP3, AAC, OGG and WAV audio formats for its regular Media Source. Check your files with the actual source you intend to use before going live. OBS: Media Sources
For a gaming broadcast, this can be useful for a loop of authorized intermission videos, game-related clips, or other media between gameplay segments. It does not, by itself, automate the game, create a live camera feed, or decide what content your channel is allowed to use. Playlist playback and scene control are separate decisions.
Build and configure the playlist in OBS
- Install OBS Studio and VLC. Match their architecture. In particular, 64-bit OBS needs 64-bit VLC for the VLC source.
- Open the scene where the playlist should appear. In the Sources panel, add a VLC Video source, then add the local media files to its playlist. Keep the files accessible on the computer running OBS.
- Choose the playback order. Turn on Loop Playlist if the list should repeat after its last item. Turn on Shuffle Playlist if you want randomized order instead of a predictable sequence. For a one-pass show, leave looping off.
- Set behavior when the source is hidden. OBS provides choices including stopping when hidden, pausing, or restarting when visible. Choose based on whether playback should continue while another scene is on air. Switch between the relevant scenes in a test and check whether playback resumes, restarts, or has stopped.
- Arrange the source in the scene. Position and size it as required, and check that it is not obscured by other sources. Confirm that the playlist’s audio is audible at the intended level in the OBS mixer.

Choose how much control to automate

OBS WebSocket has been built into OBS since version 28, according to its Remote Control Guide. The protocol and its media actions are documented by the obs-websocket protocol documentation. An external control pad or app is not required for a basic looping playlist, and an integration’s exact behavior should not be assumed without testing.
Connect OBS to YouTube and test before going live
- Check channel access. YouTube requires live streaming to be enabled and the channel verified, with no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. See YouTube’s live-streaming access requirements.
- Open YouTube Studio’s Go Live flow. Create or select an encoder stream in Live Control Room and get the stream URL and stream key for OBS. For a scheduled event, make sure the preview appears in Live Control Room before starting the broadcast. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
- Enter the connection details in OBS. Use YouTube’s server URL and stream key in OBS’s stream settings. YouTube recommends RTMPS for secure ingestion; use the server details shown for your stream. YouTube: encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions.
- Test with representative gameplay and audio. Run a private or unlisted test, check the preview and stream health, and monitor both game audio and playlist audio. Choose video settings your actual upload connection can sustain; there is no India-specific OBS playlist setting in the official guidance cited here.
- Start the event only after the preview is right. Confirm the intended scene is live, playlist playback behaves as expected, and audio is neither missing nor unexpectedly doubled.
Protect the stream key and control connection
Treat the YouTube stream key as a credential: YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Do not publish it, show it on-screen, or send it to an untrusted person. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and replace the saved key in OBS. YouTube: Manage live stream settings

For OBS WebSocket, enable password protection and do not expose remote control to people or software you do not trust. The OBS Remote Control Guide recommends protecting remote access. Keep the WebSocket password separate from your YouTube stream key.
Check rights before putting playlist media on air
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. A detected match can cause a placeholder to replace the stream, a warning, or interruption or termination if the content remains. An archived stream can also receive a Content ID claim after the live event. YouTube’s livestream terms require creators to have the necessary rights, including music licensing rights, for the content they broadcast. Use original, licensed, or otherwise authorized game footage, music and playlist media, and check whether a music owner needs to allowlist the channel in Content ID. Do not assume that a track being available in a game, a video being publicly viewable, or a license covering personal playback also grants permission to livestream and archive it. The applicable rights can depend on the specific material and license; confirm permission for your use rather than relying on the playlist source alone.
Troubleshoot common playlist and stream problems
