You can stream a gaming VOD stored on a NAS by having a separate computer or other encoder host read the file, play it through encoder software such as OBS, and send the live output to YouTube using the stream URL and stream key from YouTube Studio. A NAS is the storage source in this workflow; do not assume it can send a YouTube Live stream by itself. Test that your encoder host can read and play the exact file from your NAS before scheduling a broadcast.
How the NAS-to-YouTube Live setup works
The practical chain is: NAS file → encoder host → OBS or another encoder → YouTube Live. YouTube documents encoder software and standalone hardware as ways to send a live stream, and OBS can place media files in a scene. The NAS-to-encoder connection is an implementation choice rather than a workflow specified by YouTube or OBS, so compatibility depends on your NAS share, host, and file. The encoder host must remain on, able to read the file, and connected to the network for the duration of the broadcast.
- Store the VOD on the NAS. Use a completed recording that you have the rights to broadcast.
- Make the file available to the encoder host. Configure access to the NAS share using your normal NAS and operating-system setup. The precise share settings depend on your NAS and host; verify read access on the machine that will run the encoder.
- Play the VOD in the encoder. In OBS, add the file as a Media Source for a single video, or use the VLC Video source for a playlist.
- Send the encoder output to YouTube Live. Create or schedule an encoder stream in YouTube Studio, then enter its stream URL and stream key in your encoder.
- Check the YouTube preview and audio, then start the stream. Monitor the live event and the encoder while the VOD plays.
Check YouTube Live eligibility before setup
YouTube says a channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction during the previous 90 days to stream live. First-time activation may take up to 24 hours, so do not leave enabling live streaming until just before your planned broadcast. These figures are from YouTube Help; the reviewed pages did not state a publication year.
In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or schedule an encoder stream. Copy the stream URL and stream key into the encoder’s streaming settings. Treat the key like a password: anyone who has it may be able to broadcast to your stream. If you believe it has been exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder with the new key.

Make the NAS VOD accessible and test playback
On the computer that will run OBS, open the NAS share and confirm that the chosen account can read the video file. Play the file from that host before configuring the live broadcast. Check that it plays through to the end, that the audio is present and at a usable level, and that playback does not stall. These checks matter because a file that plays locally on a different computer is not proof that the encoder host can read the NAS reliably.
OBS’s Media Sources documentation describes a media source as a way to add media files to a scene. Its listed video types are MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM; listed audio types are MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV. Those extensions do not guarantee that every codec variant or NAS share arrangement will work. Test your particular recording in OBS on the actual encoder host.

Choose a playback source in OBS
One VOD: Media Source
- Open or create the OBS scene you want to use.
- Add a Media Source and select the VOD file on the NAS share.
- Set up playback behavior for your intended broadcast, then preview the scene and listen to its audio.
- If you add titles, a camera, or a microphone, arrange and test those sources in the same scene. They are optional for a VOD-only stream.
Menu wording can vary by OBS version, so confirm the source and file selection in your installed version. Do not assume the source will reconnect or resume exactly as you want after a network interruption; test the complete playback path in advance.
Several VODs: VLC Video source
OBS documents the VLC Video source for playlists, and VLC must be installed for that source to work. Add the playlist, then test the file order, whether the list loops as intended, transitions between files, and audio at each change. A playlist test should include files from the NAS, not just local copies, so it exercises the same share access you will use live.

Configure and validate the live output
- Configure the encoder connection. In OBS streaming settings, enter the stream URL and stream key copied from the YouTube Live Control Room. Confirm that the intended event is selected in YouTube Studio.
- Check video and audio in OBS. Preview the scene and confirm the VOD is visible, its sound reaches the output, and any optional overlays or microphone sources behave as expected.
- Allow upload headroom. YouTube recommends upload bandwidth with 20% headroom beyond the total stream bitrate. Account for the combined output bitrate and other internet use on the connection; do not treat the headline speed of a connection as guaranteed available upload capacity.
- Start the encoder and inspect YouTube’s preview. Verify the picture and sound in the Live Control Room before relying on the public event. YouTube’s encoder guidance notes that encoders can broadcast gameplay, which is why this workflow can carry a prerecorded gaming VOD as a live output.
- Monitor the event. Watch for stalled playback, missing audio, or an encoder disconnect. YouTube also advises monitoring stream audio and video and, when recording locally, checking that the archive file size continues to grow.
- End cleanly. End the stream in YouTube as directed by its streaming tips, then stop the encoder. Confirm that any local recording or backup you intended to keep is present.
Decide whether to use DVR and a local archive
YouTube automatically archives streams shorter than 12 hours, but says a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. Keep a local recording if the broadcast itself is important to preserve; do not rely on YouTube’s archive for a stream longer than 12 hours. The 12-hour guidance is from YouTube Help, whose reviewed page did not state a publication year.
DVR lets viewers pause and rewind during a live stream, but YouTube warns that DVR can be limited or unavailable on streams longer than 12 hours. Choose whether viewers need those controls, and test the event settings and viewer experience before a long broadcast. The DVR limit is also from YouTube Help; the reviewed page did not state a publication year.

Choose the setup that fits your VOD workflow
| Option | Use it when | Check or trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| OBS Media Source | You are streaming one VOD as the program. | Test the exact file and confirm the encoder host can read the NAS share. |
| OBS VLC Video playlist | You want several files in a sequence. | VLC must be installed; verify order, looping, transitions, and audio. |
| Encoder software on a computer | You want flexible scenes and the computer can access the NAS. | The computer must stay running and maintain access to the file and network for the broadcast. |
| Standalone hardware encoder | You already have a suitable dedicated encoder workflow. | No particular model is required by the guidance covered here; confirm it can access and play your source file. |
| DVR enabled or disabled | You want to choose whether viewers can pause and rewind. | DVR has limitations on streams longer than 12 hours. |
Common problems and fixes
- OBS cannot find or open the NAS file: confirm the encoder host can open the share and that the account used for the session has read permission. Re-select the file from that host and test playback before going live.
- The file appears in OBS but playback fails or stutters: test the exact file and NAS connection outside the live event. The listed container or extension alone does not establish codec compatibility or reliable share playback.
- There is no sound, or playlist audio changes unexpectedly: test the complete file or playlist in OBS and monitor the output audio before starting the YouTube event. Check transitions as well as the opening file.
- YouTube does not receive the encoder: confirm the correct event, stream URL, and current stream key are in the encoder. If the key may have been exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and replace the saved value.
- The stream drops or viewers see interruption: check the encoder host’s network path and continued access to the NAS. Ensure the connection has the upload headroom YouTube recommends, then inspect the encoder and Live Control Room preview.
- The completed stream is missing from archives: YouTube says streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured. Keep a local recording for long broadcasts and verify that it is being written while the stream runs.
Copyright and reused-content checks for gaming VODs
Only broadcast gameplay, game audio, music, overlays, and other material you have the right to use. A recording being stored on your own NAS does not establish permission to rebroadcast everything inside it. Check the rights and any applicable licenses for music, third-party footage, and other included material, and review YouTube’s current policies before scheduling. A live stream and its archive can both expose the content to claims or restrictions.
Also make the presentation meaningfully yours where appropriate: a VOD streamed live is still prerecorded material. This guide does not establish how YouTube will assess any particular channel or video for reused-content monetization; do not assume that labeling a recording as live changes its origin or guarantees monetization eligibility.
