Use OBS WebSocket only when an external app needs to control OBS. Which OBS tools fit a gaming VOD workflow?
There is no measured performance winner here: the recommendations are based on fit for the task, not comparative speed, reliability, or usability testing. A small stack is usually easier to maintain than a collection of overlapping automation tools.

How do I automatically switch scenes in OBS?
Plan the triggers before building macros
Make a short scene list for the session—for example, gameplay, a starting screen, and a break screen—and decide which transitions genuinely need automation. Write down the trigger and resulting action in plain language. A narrow rule such as “when the break timer ends, switch to gameplay” is easier to test and maintain than a collection of overlapping conditions.
Build the repeated actions with Advanced Scene Switcher
- Install the current Advanced Scene Switcher release from its OBS resource page, and confirm its stated minimum OBS version and operating-system support before installing.
- In OBS, open the plugin’s interface and create a macro for one repeated action. Select a trigger the installed release supports, then choose the scene, recording, replay-buffer, timer, or other action you want it to perform.
- Enable the macro and test it in a short recording or a non-critical session. Confirm both that the trigger fires when expected and that it does not fire during unrelated gameplay.
- Add further macros only when you can describe their conditions and outcomes clearly. Keep a manual way to change scenes or stop recording if a rule behaves unexpectedly.
The plugin resource page’s latest update entry is dated August 7, 2026 and notes a minimum OBS version of 31.1.1. That requirement and release availability can change, so check the current listing against your installed OBS build before relying on it.

When should I enable OBS WebSocket?
Use WebSocket when an external application, script, or device needs to send commands to OBS. OBS Studio includes WebSocket by default starting with OBS Studio 28; you do not need a separate WebSocket plugin just to expose that built-in control interface. OBS lists compatible clients in its Remote Control Guide.
- In OBS, open Tools > WebSocket Server Settings.
- Enable the WebSocket server only if an external client needs it. Set authentication and a strong password as recommended by OBS.
- Configure the client with the server connection details and credentials. Verify the connection and test a harmless action before allowing it to change scenes or control recording.
- Do not expose the control interface to a network unnecessarily. Treat access to it as control of OBS, not as a read-only status connection.
OBS distinguishes compiled plugins, scripts, and WebSocket clients as different extension routes. Compiled plugins may need recompilation after OBS changes; scripts in Python or Lua are generally more resilient to minor API changes, though less performant. OBS notes that script performance is usually not an issue in most cases. See the OBS Developer Guide for the distinctions and compatibility context.

Can OBS save markers while I record?
Yes. StreamUP Chapter Marker Manager can create markers from its OBS dock, a hotkey, WebSocket, or scene changes. Its resource listing says the minimum OBS version is 28.0.0 and shows an update dated April 14, 2026; verify the live listing before installation.
- Install the current plugin release and open its dock or configuration, following the StreamUP configuration guide.
- Choose a hotkey for moments you want to find during editing. If you automate markers on scene changes, enable that only for transitions that correspond to meaningful sections or edit points.
- Exclude scenes that should not create markers, such as a frequently used holding scene, if the plugin configuration permits it.
- Export marker data for your editing workflow. If you want markers embedded in a recording, check the plugin documentation for the required OBS version and recording-format conditions.
Think of markers as editing notes. They can help locate a boss fight, match, strategy change, or memorable moment later, but the available documentation does not establish that every marker automatically becomes a published YouTube chapter.

How do I turn recording markers into YouTube chapters?
Use the exported marker data as notes, then add or edit the chapter list in the video’s description in YouTube Studio. YouTube’s Video chapters guidance sets these conditions for creator-added chapters:
- The first timestamp is 00:00.
- There are at least three timestamps, listed in ascending order.
- Each chapter is at least 10 seconds long.
- Each timestamp is paired with a title in the description.
For example, a description can list 00:00 Opening, 02:15 First match, and 12:40 Final round, provided the actual video and spacing meet YouTube’s rules. Convert or check marker times against the final edited video’s timeline: cuts, trims, and inserted segments can make the original recording times wrong.

Manual description chapters override automatic chapters. YouTube says not every video is eligible for automatic chapters and not every eligible video receives them. If your channel does not yet have chapter access, manual chapters require access to advanced features.

No. A Stream Deck is an optional physical control surface for triggering compatible OBS actions; it is not required for Advanced Scene Switcher macros, recording markers, or YouTube chapters. StreamUP lists Stream Deck among compatible OBS WebSocket automation tools in its plugin documentation. You can use a compatible software client instead, subject to its supported actions and connection setup.

Common problems and fixes
- The plugin will not install or load: compare the plugin’s current OBS minimum with your installed version, confirm you downloaded the build for your operating system, and check the resource page for a newer compatible release.
- A macro switches scenes at the wrong time: simplify its conditions, check whether another macro can also fire, and test each trigger in a short session before enabling more rules.
- An external client cannot connect: check that WebSocket is enabled in OBS, that the connection details match, and that the client supports your OBS version. If authentication is enabled, confirm the client has the correct password.
- A client can connect but cannot perform the desired action: confirm that the action is exposed by that client and that its OBS integration supports it; WebSocket compatibility does not mean every client supports every OBS command.
- Markers create too much noise: use a hotkey for selective notes, or disable automatic marking for scenes that do not represent useful chapter or editing points.
- YouTube does not show your chapters: check the description for the 00:00 opening timestamp, at least three timestamps in ascending order, titles, and a minimum 10-second duration per chapter. Also check channel access to advanced features if manual chapters are unavailable.
- Markers no longer line up after editing: recalculate their times on the final video’s timeline before adding them to the description.
