Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Video compression makes a moving sequence of images smaller by simplifying some detail within each frame and reusing information between frames. The encoder turns the video into a compressed stream; a compatible decoder reconstructs images for playback. How much quality and file size change depends on the codec, bitrate, resolution, frame rate, footage, and settings—not on one number alone.
Why video needs compression
A video is a sequence of still images, or frames, shown rapidly one after another. Storing every frame as a full, uncompressed image would take enormous space: MDN gives the explanatory approximation that one 4K frame of about 8 million pixels is roughly 25 MB, and an hour of uncompressed 4K video would exceed 3 TB. These figures describe uncompressed image data, not the expected size of a compressed video file. MDN’s video processing concepts guide explains the basics.
Compression reduces the data needed to store or transmit the sequence. It does this by representing image detail more efficiently and by avoiding the repeated encoding of parts of a scene that have not changed.
How video compression works
1. Simplifying detail inside a frame
Within an individual image, an encoder can reduce or discard some fine detail that viewers may notice less than larger shapes and changes. This is spatial compression. In lossy compression, the encoder quantizes image information, producing a smaller representation that may differ from the original. If compression is too aggressive, the difference can become visible as softness, blockiness, banding, or other artifacts.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
2. Reusing information between frames
Neighboring frames often show the same scene with only some movement or change. Rather than encode every frame as a complete picture, a video codec can use reference frames and describe how other frames differ from them. Predicted or delta frames encode changes, or residuals, relative to a prediction. This temporal compression saves data, but means playback, seeking, and error recovery can depend on reference points.
Key or intra-coded frames provide fuller reference pictures. A sequence can therefore contain a mix of more complete frames and frames that rely on other frames to reconstruct the image.

3. Coding the remaining symbols efficiently
After prediction and quantization, entropy coding represents the remaining symbols compactly without further discarding information at that stage. That step is lossless, but it does not make the entire encode lossless: if quantization already removed detail, entropy coding cannot restore it.
What affects file size and visual quality?
Bitrate is the amount of data allocated per second. A higher bitrate generally gives the encoder more room to preserve detail, but it usually creates a larger file and does not guarantee better results on its own. The IETF notes that bitrate selection depends on resolution, frame rate, color depth, codec, encoding parameters, scene complexity, and motion. RFC 9317 provides context for streaming media.

- Resolution: More pixels in each frame generally require more data.
- Frame rate: More frames each second generally require more data. For uploads, preserve the recorded frame rate unless there is a clear reason to change it.
- Motion and detail: Fast movement, fine texture, and image noise are harder to predict or compress than a relatively still, simple scene at the same bitrate.
- Codec and encoder settings: A codec defines coding and decoding methods. Profiles, implementation, and settings affect quality, speed, compatibility, and device support. Encoding can require substantially more computation than decoding.
- Lossy or lossless: Lossy compression accepts some deviation from the original to make a smaller delivery file. Lossless compression reconstructs the original on decoding, but typically produces much larger files.
There is no universal bitrate that guarantees a particular quality. Treat figures as recommendations for a specific platform and workflow, not as fixed requirements for every video.
Codec and container are not the same
A codec is the method used to encode and decode video. H.264/AVC, HEVC/H.265, VP9, and AV1 are examples. A container packages encoded audio and video streams along with metadata; MP4, WebM, and MKV are examples. An MP4 file extension does not, by itself, tell you which video codec is inside. Playback requires software that can read the container and decode its streams.

Codec selection involves trade-offs rather than a universal winner. YouTube recommends H.264 for its specified upload workflow. Vimeo describes H.265/HEVC as a way to achieve high visual quality with a smaller file, at the cost of longer encoding time. The Alliance for Open Media describes AV1 as an open codec designed for efficient compression and high-resolution adaptive streaming and HDR. Actual size and quality depend on the encoder, settings, content, and device support; compare compatibility, quality at the bitrate you need, encoding time, compute cost, and decoding support. YouTube’s upload encoding recommendations, Vimeo’s compression guidelines, and the Alliance for Open Media’s AV1 overview describe their respective guidance and technology.

YouTube’s figures above are for SDR uploads in its specified workflow, not a universal viewing requirement; its guidance also distinguishes HDR recommendations. It recommends H.264, progressive scan, 4:2:0 chroma subsampling, and uploading at the frame rate in which the footage was recorded. Vimeo recommends variable bitrate when available. The different platform recommendations are a reminder to check the requirements for your actual destination. YouTube’s guidance and Vimeo’s guidance provide the platform-specific details.
How to choose settings for a video
- Check the destination. Use the receiving platform’s current encoding guidance rather than assuming one bitrate applies everywhere.
- Keep the source’s frame rate and resolution where practical. Changing them without a clear need can alter motion or detail; YouTube recommends uploading at the recorded frame rate for its workflow.
- Choose a supported codec and container. Confirm that the platform accepts the codec and that your intended players and devices can decode it. Do not infer the codec from the file extension alone.
- Set a suitable bitrate or quality target. Use the platform’s guidance as a starting point. Complex, noisy, or fast-moving footage may need more data than a simple static scene.
- Review the encoded result. Check representative sections for artifacts and confirm that file size, playback compatibility, and encoding time work for your use.
What compression means for a YouTube loop
Compression choices affect the file you upload, not just the live stream. If you are preparing prerecorded video to keep a YouTube channel live, choose a file that meets YouTube’s upload guidance and inspect it before building a loop. Compression does not grant permission to use footage, music, or other material: check copyright rights, and remember that a continuous stream of prerecorded content still needs to comply with YouTube’s rules for live streams and monetization.
If your goal is to keep an uploaded video playing on YouTube around the clock, StreamNeo is a cloud service for that specific YouTube workflow: upload a recording or make a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops the uploaded videos from the cloud; it does not stream from a camera or target other platforms.
Or let it run in the cloud
Nothing needs to stay on at home: your computer can be off. StreamNeo sends the video as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. Upload your video, add the YouTube stream key, and go live. Start your free day on StreamNeo.
