A temple trust in India can apply to earn revenue from a 24/7 YouTube aarti stream, but the stream is not automatically eligible because it is religious or continuously live. The channel must meet YouTube Partner Program (YPP) requirements, pass a channel-wide review, and have the rights to everything it broadcasts. Whether YouTube income is exempt from tax or subject to GST is a separate question that depends on the trust’s legal and financial circumstances.
What YouTube monetization can a temple stream use?
An eligible, monetized live stream may earn through advertising and viewer-funding features. YouTube lists ads, Super Chat, Super Stickers, and channel memberships among live-stream monetization options. Availability of a feature depends on the channel and applicable YouTube requirements; applying for YPP is not the same as being accepted.
Advertising during aarti
When live monetization is enabled, pre-roll and display ads are automatically enabled. Mid-roll ads can be set to run automatically or inserted manually. YouTube cautions: “Ad slots are not guaranteed to serve ads.” Even when an ad slot does serve, ads may interrupt viewing. A trust that wants to protect the uninterrupted central portion of aarti should review the live-ad controls and consider delaying automatic mid-rolls around that time.
YouTube reported that creators who enabled automatic live mid-roll ads had more than 20% average uplift in instream ad revenue per hour compared with channels that did not, across 207 countries in January 2024. That is a platform-reported aggregate comparison, not a forecast for a temple channel or a guaranteed result.

Viewer contributions are not the same as ad revenue
Super Chat, Super Stickers, and memberships can give eligible viewers ways to support a channel, but they do not make a channel eligible for YPP by themselves. Keep donation messaging accurate: do not describe a payment as tax-deductible unless the trust has confirmed that it qualifies under the applicable rules.
What does the channel need to qualify for YPP in India?
YouTube’s YPP guidance lists India as a supported country. The current entry route is either 1,000 subscribers plus 4,000 qualified public watch hours in the preceding 12 months, or 1,000 subscribers plus 10 million qualified public Shorts views in the preceding 90 days. YouTube’s criteria were checked in 2026; these are application thresholds, not a promise of acceptance or earnings.
Other application conditions
The channel must also meet YouTube’s signup conditions, including having no active Community Guidelines strikes, enabling two-step verification, having access to advanced features, and linking an AdSense for YouTube account. YouTube reviews the channel as a whole after application, so meeting the view or subscriber threshold alone does not guarantee approval.
A public livestream can contribute to the watch-hour route only if it remains public and is converted to video on demand. Under YouTube’s guidance, unlisted, deleted, or non-converted streams do not count toward that eligibility measure.

Does a continuous aarti feed meet YouTube’s originality and rights rules?
The religious subject of aarti does not by itself settle whether a channel qualifies. YouTube’s monetization policy says, “This policy makes sure monetized content offers viewers something appealing and interesting to watch.” Its July 15, 2025 clarification says repetitive or mass-produced content falls under its “inauthentic content” policy; YouTube also said this type of content was already ineligible under existing rules. The review applies to the channel overall, and the content should offer distinct creative, educational, or other value.
Make clear that the stream is the trust’s own material
A trust-controlled live camera feed of an actual ceremony is meaningfully different from looping someone else’s old recording. Keep practical evidence that the trust controls the footage, and retain permissions for any material it uses. Clear music, recordings, artwork, and other copyrighted material, including anything audible in the temple or added to the broadcast. Do not assume that devotional subject matter makes a recording free to use.
Ads may appear on content when a rights holder places them. Seeing an ad on the stream does not prove the trust has been accepted into YPP or is receiving a share of the revenue.

Keep the viewer experience and purpose in view
A long-running feed should be a genuine, useful view of the ceremony rather than a thinly varied loop designed only to accumulate viewing time. If the ceremony has quiet periods, explain what viewers are seeing through original context where appropriate, and avoid presenting prerecorded footage as a live event. Do not promise that YouTube will approve a particular channel before its review.

YouTube supports streaming with a webcam, a mobile device, or an encoder. An encoder—software or standalone hardware—can help when the production uses external audio/video equipment or needs more control, but it is not a monetization requirement. The essential practical steps are to establish a reliable, rights-cleared feed and configure it in YouTube Studio.
- Prepare the channel. Confirm access to the channel, enable two-step verification, check for active Community Guidelines strikes, and ensure advanced features are available. For YPP application, link an AdSense for YouTube account when prompted.
- Choose the production path. Use a webcam or mobile device for a straightforward live feed. Use an encoder if the trust needs to connect external audio/video hardware or manage a more involved production. YouTube’s encoder guide includes examples such as AJA HELO Plus and software/services with continuous-stream capabilities; those examples are not endorsements or a statement of current price or availability.
- Set up the live event in YouTube Studio. Create or schedule the live stream, select the appropriate stream method, and follow YouTube’s on-screen instructions to connect the camera, device, or encoder. Protect the stream key: treat it like a password, do not show it on screen, and do not share it publicly.
- Check the feed before relying on it. Verify the picture, sound, framing, and connection from the viewer’s perspective. Check that the stream is public if it is intended to build qualifying public watch hours, and retain the resulting video on demand if it is to count under YouTube’s stated watch-hour rule.
- Review monetization settings after YPP acceptance. Turn on the eligible live monetization features you want, and review ad placement against the ceremony schedule. Check the current YouTube Studio controls because labels and availability can change.
How should the trust think about income tax, donations, and GST?
YouTube eligibility and Indian tax treatment are separate decisions. The Income Tax Department says Section 11 can exempt income derived from property held under trust wholly for charitable or religious purposes to the extent the income is applied to those purposes in India, subject to statutory conditions. It also says Section 12AB registration is mandatory to claim the Section 11 exemption route. This general guidance does not establish that every payment from YouTube to every temple trust is exempt.

Section 80G and donor claims
Do not tell viewers that a donation to the temple is deductible under Section 80G without confirming the trust’s current approval and eligibility. The law includes approval and recordkeeping conditions and rules concerning institutions expressed to benefit a particular religious community or caste. Separate provisions address certain specifically notified temple renovation or repair donations; those do not create a general deduction for all temple donations or stream contributions.
GST treatment
CBIC Circular No. 116/35/2019-GST addresses a genuine donation acknowledged with gratitude or public recognition, without advertising or promoting the donor’s business. In that situation, the circular says: “Therefore, there is no GST liability on such consideration.” That statement concerns the described donation arrangement; it should not be extended to YouTube advertising income.
CBIC also lists exemptions for conducting a religious ceremony and specified services connected with qualifying religious places. Those materials do not determine whether this trust’s YouTube ad receipts create a GST liability, require registration, or trigger place-of-supply rules. The trust should have a tax professional review its state, turnover, accounts, trust deed, YouTube arrangements, and payment records.
