You can use VLC to play a continuous kirtan playlist, but the available official instructions do not verify that VLC by itself can send a compatible feed directly to YouTube Live. VLC documents playlist streaming over a local network; YouTube requires an encoder configured with the stream URL and key from YouTube Studio. Test the complete signal path before announcing a broadcast, and use a YouTube-compatible encoder if your VLC setup cannot connect.
What you need to know before setting up a continuous stream
A continuous broadcast has three separate parts: the playlist, an encoder feed that YouTube can ingest, and the live event in YouTube Studio. VLC can play successive media files and keep its output open between them in its documented playlist workflow. That does not establish that a particular VLC version or configuration can send the required feed directly to YouTube.
VLC’s documented playlist example sends output over HTTP to a receiver on a local network (VideoLAN: Introduction to Stream Output; VideoLAN: VLM Example: Broadcast A Playlist). YouTube’s encoder workflow instead has you enter the event’s stream URL and stream key in an encoder. YouTube recommends RTMPS, but the cited VLC documentation does not verify an end-to-end VLC-to-YouTube setup or specify the exact version, operating system, modules, or output settings that would work.
1. Confirm your channel can livestream
YouTube says a channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. Its current guidance also sets a minimum age of 16 to livestream. Check the channel’s eligibility before preparing the broadcast in detail: YouTube Help: Get started with live streaming.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
2. Prepare and check the kirtan playlist in VLC
- Add authorized recordings: Create a VLC playlist containing the kirtan tracks you intend to broadcast. Confirm that you have permission for the actual recordings and the intended public livestream. Permission for a composition and rights to a particular recording may be separate; religious or devotional content is not automatically free to rebroadcast.
- Set the sequence and repeat behavior: Choose whether the playlist should repeat individual tracks or the full sequence, according to how you want the program to run. Play it locally first and listen for gaps, abrupt transitions, unexpected silence, or tracks that fail to load.
- Check VLC’s output behavior: VideoLAN’s VLC Desktop 3.0 documentation shows a playlist broadcast with multiple inputs and the
sout-keepoption to keep output open as one media file ends and another begins. The example’s HTTP output is for a local-network receiver; it is not a verified YouTube connection recipe.
Do not copy a VLC output chain or command from a local-network example and assume it will satisfy YouTube’s ingestion requirements. Whether your VLC build can produce the compatible protocol and settings is environment-specific and is not established by the cited documentation.
3. Create the YouTube event and protect its stream key
- Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room. Create an event or schedule the broadcast if it needs a start time.
- In the event’s stream settings, copy the current stream URL and stream key into the matching fields in the encoder you intend to use. YouTube describes the key as similar to a password and address. Keep it private: do not include it in a public screenshot, message, or example.
- If the key is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room before using it again. Follow YouTube’s encoder workflow and event prompts: YouTube Help: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
4. Confirm the encoder can deliver a YouTube-compatible feed
YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends RTMPS, an encrypted extension of RTMP, and lists supported video codecs (H.264, H.265, or AV1) and audio codecs (AAC or MP3). It recommends constant-bitrate encoding and a two-second keyframe interval, with a maximum recommended interval of four seconds. The appropriate bitrate depends on codec, resolution, and frame rate; there is no single bitrate established here for every mostly static devotional stream. Use YouTube’s current settings guidance for the resolution and frame rate you plan to send: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

The sources do not verify that VLC alone can meet those settings and connect to YouTube for a particular computer. Test your exact setup. If VLC cannot produce a compatible feed, use an encoder that supports YouTube’s protocol and can accept the VLC output; do not assume a particular bridge or configuration will work without confirming it on your system.
5. Test the whole signal path before going live
- Start the playlist and encoder using representative audio and video—not just a short silent or blank test file.
- Open the event in Live Control Room and wait for YouTube’s preview. Check that picture and sound arrive as intended and that the stream-health indicators do not show a problem.
- For a scheduled event, YouTube recommends starting the encoder at least 15 minutes before the scheduled start. Keep monitoring the preview and stream health; a playlist that continues playing on the computer does not prove the internet feed or YouTube event is uninterrupted. See YouTube’s encoder settings guidance and YouTube live streaming tips.
- When YouTube shows the preview and the event is ready, follow the Live Control Room prompts. For scheduled streams, you may need to click Go live; starting the encoder does not necessarily publish the event by itself.
6. End the event and understand the archive limit
When the broadcast is over, stop the encoder feed and end the event using the Live Control Room prompts. YouTube states that streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived; the cited guidance does not promise automatic archiving for streams at or beyond that duration. Check the resulting video rather than relying on a continuous stream being preserved indefinitely.

Troubleshooting a VLC-to-YouTube broadcast
| What you see | What to check |
|---|---|
| VLC plays the playlist, but YouTube has no preview | VLC playback alone does not confirm a feed reached YouTube. Confirm that the encoder is sending to the current event’s stream URL with the matching key, and that your setup supports YouTube’s ingestion protocol. The VLC local-network example is not a YouTube connection recipe. |
| The encoder starts, but YouTube reports a stream problem | Review the selected protocol, codecs, constant-bitrate setting, keyframe interval, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate against YouTube’s current encoder guidance. Re-test and watch stream health. |
| The playlist stops or pauses between tracks | Check that every playlist file is available and plays through in VLC. VideoLAN’s playlist streaming example uses sout-keep to keep output open between successive files, but its documented example is local-network streaming and does not establish YouTube compatibility. |
| The scheduled event is not publicly live | Check the Live Control Room preview and event status. Follow the prompts and click Go live if the scheduled event requires it. |
| The stream key may have been disclosed | Reset the key in Live Control Room and update the encoder with the replacement. Treat the key like a password. |
| Audio or video is missing or unexpected | Test with representative media before the event, confirm the encoder receives both intended audio and video, and check YouTube’s preview rather than relying only on VLC’s local playback. |
