You can change a YouTube stream’s game or category without ending the broadcast: keep your encoder running, open the active stream in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, edit the available metadata, and save. Switch the gameplay separately in your encoder. YouTube’s current help explains where stream metadata is managed, but does not document the exact game-selector interaction during an already-live broadcast, so check the controls shown for your stream.
Game changes and category changes are separate
Your encoder sends the broadcast’s video and audio. YouTube Studio manages the broadcast metadata, including the category or game field where it is available. Changing an OBS scene changes what viewers see; it should not be assumed to change YouTube’s game label automatically. You may need to make both changes. Change the game label without ending the stream
- Keep your encoder running. Do not select End Stream just to change the metadata. YouTube treats ending the broadcast as a separate action from editing its settings.
- Open Live Control Room. In YouTube Studio, go to Create → Go live, then select the active stream. YouTube’s current help describes editing metadata through the stream settings page; the exact controls may vary with the interface presented to your account.
- Open the active stream’s edit or settings controls. Look for the category or game field. If it is present, choose the appropriate game or category and save. YouTube’s current help supports editing stream metadata, but does not specify the exact game-selector interaction while a stream is already live.
- Switch the gameplay in your encoder. Change to the scene or source for the next game. Check the outgoing preview to confirm that the video matches the label you selected.
- Verify the result in the live experience. Confirm the stream is still running and that the visible gameplay and available YouTube metadata are accurate. If the game field is not available, use a title and description that remain accurate across the games you plan to play, or consult current YouTube Studio stream settings help.
If you cannot find a game or category selector
Do not rely on an old click-by-click guide to promise a particular current label or layout. An OBS Project community guide describes category and game fields in Live Control Room, but it is older and is best treated as corroboration, not a guarantee of today’s interface. Check the active stream’s current edit controls and YouTube’s help. If the field is absent, avoid claiming that changing an encoder scene will update it; keep the stream title and description broadly accurate instead.
Common mistakes and fixes
- The video changed, but the YouTube game label did not: a scene/source switch changes the encoder output, not necessarily broadcast metadata. Edit the active stream in Live Control Room separately, if the field is offered.
- The broadcast stopped while changing games: check whether you selected End Stream or stopped encoder output. YouTube identifies both as part of ending an encoder broadcast; a metadata edit alone does not require that action.
- The game field or labels do not match an online guide: interfaces can change. Use the active stream’s current settings and YouTube’s current help rather than assuming an older guide’s exact path still applies.
- You expect a separate replay or metadata segment for each game: do not assume YouTube will split one continuous replay by game. The cited official guidance explains archive behavior, not per-game segmentation. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; it does not establish that a single replay will contain separate per-game metadata segments.
