Yes. Once YouTube has created an archive of your gaming livestream, you can add chapters by editing the archived video’s description and adding a correctly formatted timestamp list. Those chapters navigate the finished VOD; they are not the same as DVR controls, which let viewers pause or rewind while a broadcast is live.
How to add chapters to a gaming livestream archive
- Wait for the archive. After the stream ends, check that YouTube created a video archive. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived; streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured. Keep a local recording if you need a dependable backup. See YouTube’s archive guidance.
- Open the archive in YouTube Studio. Find the video and edit its description. YouTube’s chapter instructions apply to timestamps and titles in a video description; they do not describe a special chapter feature for rerun broadcasts.
- Add the timestamp list. Start with
00:00, include at least three timestamps in ascending order, and make sure each chapter is at least 10 seconds long. Give each timestamp a useful title, then save the description. These are YouTube’s manual chapter requirements in its video chapters help page. - Check the watch page. Confirm that the progress bar shows chapter divisions and that the titles match the intended moments. Viewers can navigate through the progress bar or the chapter title in the player and description, as described in YouTube’s chapters and seeking guidance.
For example, replace these illustrative labels and times with moments that actually occur in your VOD:

18:42 Loadout change

Chapters are added to a completed video through its description. DVR is a live-stream playback feature: it lets viewers pause and rewind during the broadcast, but not seek to a point before the stream began. YouTube notes that DVR may be limited or unavailable for very long streams and on some devices or older app versions. If you disable DVR, viewers cannot seek back during the live broadcast, though the full recording may still be available afterward. See YouTube’s DVR instructions.
So, if you rebroadcast recorded gameplay as a new live stream, timestamps in the original video’s description should not be treated as chapter markers for that new broadcast. Add chapters to the resulting archive after YouTube creates it and you can edit its description.

If chapters do not appear
- Check the format and order. Begin at
00:00, include at least three timestamps, and list them in ascending order. - Check chapter lengths. Every chapter must span at least 10 seconds.
- Confirm you edited the right video. The timestamp list belongs in the description of the archived VOD, not the description of a separate source video if you want chapters on the new archive.
- Allow for archive availability. You need an archive to edit; YouTube warns that streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured.
- Do not rely on automatic chapters. YouTube says automatic chapters are not available on every video, and eligible videos are not guaranteed to receive them. Manual timestamps override automatic chapters. Review the timestamp chapter instructions if the list still is not working.
