You can use Liquidsoap to turn an authorized collection of Sikh kirtan recordings into a playlist source and send it to YouTube Live. The playlist keeps the program moving, but it does not keep a computer, network connection, Liquidsoap process, or YouTube ingest session healthy by itself. This guide covers the setup decisions, a safe configuration approach, testing, rights, continuity, and archiving. Liquidsoap’s current source-composition documentation is for the 2.5.x development series, while its documented YouTube RTMP output reference is version 2.4.5; verify syntax against the release you install.
What you need before setting up the stream
- A collection of recordings you are authorized to broadcast. Kirtan’s devotional or traditional subject matter does not automatically make a particular recording free to rebroadcast.
- A machine or hosted server that can run Liquidsoap continuously, access the audio files, and maintain a stable internet connection.
- A YouTube channel enabled for live streaming, plus the current ingest URL and stream key shown in YouTube Live Control Room.
- A Liquidsoap build with the output and encoder support required for your chosen YouTube ingest format. Exact encoder syntax varies by build; verify it against the installed release.
Choose the program structure: playlist only or live interruption
Playlist-only stream
For an unattended program, use a Liquidsoap playlist as the source. Liquidsoap’s source-composition documentation describes playlists as sources and how one source hands off to another. This is the simpler arrangement when the channel should play a prepared sequence continuously.
Live input with playlist fallback
If a presenter or another live source must be able to take priority, Liquidsoap’s fallback composition can select a live Harbor input and return to a playlist when that input is unavailable. Decide how transitions should behave and test them; a fallback is a source-selection mechanism, not a guarantee that the live input or the YouTube output will remain connected.
Liquidsoap’s Harbor and source-composition material is in the current 2.5.x development documentation. Check the documentation for the version you actually deploy before relying on its exact syntax or behavior.

Prepare and protect the recordings
- Put only recordings you are permitted to broadcast into the playlist or directory used by Liquidsoap.
- Keep the media files accessible to the process under the account that runs Liquidsoap. Confirm file paths, permissions, and that the playlist does not reference missing files.
- Check that the program advances through the recordings as intended, including what happens at the end of the list and when a file cannot be read.
- Keep a separate copy of the source material and any local recording you make. A playlist is not a backup.
Confirm rights for the specific recording, performance, arrangement, and any included third-party material. YouTube’s livestream terms say creators warrant that they have all necessary rights for live content, including music licensing rights. YouTube also scans live streams for third-party matches; detected content can interrupt or terminate a stream. If you have a license, check whether the rights owner needs to allowlist your channel for live use.

Connect Liquidsoap to YouTube Live
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or select the livestream you intend to use.
- Copy the current stream URL and stream key provided there. Liquidsoap’s version 2.4.5 reference for
output.youtube.live.rtmpdocuments an encoder, source, secret stream key, and RTMP URL parameter; its default URL isrtmp://a.rtmp.youtube.com/live2. Prefer the current URL shown in YouTube rather than assuming the default applies to your setup. - Configure the Liquidsoap output to use the playlist or composed source, the matching encoder, the stream key, and the ingest URL. Store the key as a secret credential: do not put it in a public script, paste it into a public issue, or include it in a screenshot.
- Choose RTMPS when your Liquidsoap build and YouTube’s current ingest configuration support it. YouTube recommends RTMPS to encrypt the connection in transit.
- Check the output and encoder options against the documentation for your installed Liquidsoap version. The YouTube output reference located here is version 2.4.5, whereas the source documentation is 2.5.x development documentation; do not assume an example from one version is valid unchanged in another.
YouTube’s encoder setup guidance describes the stream URL and key workflow. Treat the key like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a stream to the associated event.
Set the encoder for YouTube and verify the video path
YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; CBR encoding; and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. For stereo audio, it recommends 128 Kbps and a 44.1 kHz sample rate. These are YouTube-published recommendations, not measurements of a particular Liquidsoap setup.

- Use an encoder and settings supported by both your installed Liquidsoap build and the current YouTube ingest requirements.
- Use constant bitrate (CBR) for the stream and configure a two-second keyframe interval where video is being sent; do not exceed four seconds.
- For stereo audio, use YouTube’s recommended 128 Kbps bitrate and 44.1 kHz sample rate if compatible with your encoder and source.
- Check whether your YouTube ingest setup requires video. The audio-playlist and output references do not validate a complete audio-only Liquidsoap-to-YouTube configuration. If video is required, verify the visual source and encoder path for your Liquidsoap release rather than assuming a static-image recipe will work.
The exact Liquidsoap encoder expression depends on the installed build and its available encoders. No complete script should be treated as production-ready without testing it against that build and your YouTube event.

Test before making the stream public
- Start with a private or unlisted test event, as appropriate for your channel and YouTube’s available controls.
- Start Liquidsoap and confirm that it connects to the intended event rather than a previous stream.
- Preview the stream in Live Control Room. Listen for actual audio, check that the playlist advances, and confirm video is present if the ingest setup requires it.
- Watch YouTube’s stream-health indicator and resolve warnings before relying on the stream for continuous programming.
- Test a restart and, if using a live input with fallback, test both the live-source handoff and the return to the playlist.
- After the test, check that the stream key remains private and that the production event is configured as intended.
YouTube advises creators to test, preview, and monitor stream health. A successful initial connection does not prove that the host, process, network, files, or ingest will stay healthy indefinitely.

- Host: The machine or server running Liquidsoap must remain powered and available. A playlist does not provide machine uptime.
- Process: Liquidsoap must continue running and be able to read the source files. Decide how you will detect and recover from a stopped process.
- Network: A continuous program still depends on a stable connection from the host to YouTube’s ingest endpoint.
- Ingest: Monitor the Live Control Room. A YouTube-side disconnect or stream-health problem is separate from whether Liquidsoap is still playing audio locally.
- Credentials and rights: Keep the stream key protected and make sure the permissions for the recordings remain applicable to the broadcast.
For unattended operation, a VPS or dedicated server is one possible hosting category, but Liquidsoap and YouTube documentation do not establish that any particular provider is suitable. Assess a host’s network, storage, operational monitoring, and recovery arrangements before choosing one.

Understand YouTube’s archive limit
YouTube says livestreams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, recommends keeping a local recording, and warns that a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. If the channel needs an archive, do not rely on one uninterrupted stream to preserve the entire program. Consider scheduling or restarting segments and maintaining a local recording workflow. A locally recorded backup needs storage sized for the recording format and the time you want to retain it; an external SSD is one optional storage method, not a YouTube requirement.
