For a stereo internet-radio broadcast sent to YouTube Live over RTMP or RTMPS, use AAC audio at 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps as the practical default. YouTube also supports MP3 for stereo live audio. For a true 5.1-channel broadcast, use AAC at 48 kHz and 384 kbps instead. These are YouTube’s recommended live-encoder settings, not guarantees of a particular listening quality. YouTube Help’s live encoder guidance was accessed October 3, 2026.
Recommended YouTube Live audio settings for internet radio
Choose settings for the channel layout you are actually broadcasting. Ordinary two-channel internet radio is stereo; do not use the 5.1 recommendation unless your program is genuinely multichannel.
| Use case | Audio codec | Sample rate | Audio bitrate |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stereo live stream over RTMP/RTMPS | AAC or MP3 | 44.1 kHz | 128 kbps recommended |
| 5.1 live stream over RTMP/RTMPS | AAC | 48 kHz | 384 kbps recommended |
These figures are YouTube Help’s current live encoder recommendations, accessed October 3, 2026. The guidance lists AAC or MP3 for live audio and specifies that 5.1 surround over RTMP/RTMPS is supported only with AAC. AAC is a straightforward default for stereo, but YouTube does not claim it sounds better than MP3.
What the audio settings mean
Codec: AAC or MP3
The codec is the audio compression format. Select AAC or MP3 in your encoder for a stereo RTMP/RTMPS stream. For 5.1 over those protocols, select AAC.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Sample rate: 44.1 kHz for stereo live audio
Sample rate describes how frequently the audio signal is sampled. For stereo live ingest, YouTube recommends 44.1 kHz. The 48 kHz figure belongs to its 5.1 live recommendation, not the ordinary stereo live setting.
Bitrate: 128 kbps for stereo
Bitrate is the amount of encoded audio data sent each second. YouTube recommends 128 kbps for stereo live audio and 384 kbps for 5.1 live audio. These are recommended encoder values, not proof that raising the bitrate or sample rate will improve what listeners hear.

Do not confuse live streaming with uploading a recording
A pre-recorded file uploaded to YouTube follows a different workflow from a live RTMP/RTMPS broadcast. YouTube’s upload-encoding guidance recommends AAC-LC, Opus, or Eclipsa Audio at 48 kHz, with 384 kbps recommended for stereo uploads. That 48 kHz upload recommendation should not be substituted for YouTube’s 44.1 kHz stereo live recommendation. YouTube’s upload encoding guidance was accessed October 3, 2026.
The live and upload pages give recommendations for their respective workflows. They do not establish one best setting for every protocol or special configuration; the cited live encoder settings cover RTMP/RTMPS, not every HLS arrangement.

Set up and check the stream
- Confirm the delivery path and channel layout. For the settings here, use the RTMP/RTMPS live workflow. Choose stereo for a normal two-channel radio program; choose 5.1 only if the source and broadcast are actually multichannel.
- Set the encoder’s audio fields. For stereo, select AAC (or MP3), 44.1 kHz, and 128 kbps. For 5.1, select AAC, 48 kHz, and 384 kbps.
- Keep sample rates consistent. Google’s YouTube Live Streaming API documentation says configured streams should use the same audio sample rate. Avoid mixing different rates across the streams in a configuration. See LiveStreams | YouTube Live Streaming API.
- Test before the broadcast. YouTube advises testing with audio and movement similar to the intended program, then checking stream-health messages during the event. It also recommends running an upload-speed test to check your upload bitrate. A test helps reveal problems in the full path from source and encoder to YouTube; it does not guarantee a particular audience playback result.
Troubleshooting audio configuration
- Stereo audio is set to 48 kHz: For RTMP/RTMPS stereo live audio, change it to YouTube’s recommended 44.1 kHz. The 48 kHz live recommendation applies to 5.1.
- A 5.1 stream is using MP3: Change the codec to AAC; YouTube’s live guidance specifies AAC-only support for 5.1 over RTMP/RTMPS.
- The API or stream health reports a configuration concern: Check for an unsupported codec, audio bitrate above YouTube’s recommendation, or inconsistent sample rates. Match the relevant recommended row and keep configured streams at one sample rate.
- The settings look right but the sound still has a problem: Test the complete setup using representative audio, then use YouTube’s stream-health messages to investigate. The documented values are recommendations, not a diagnosis or guarantee of quality.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your internet-radio format uses uploaded recordings rather than a live microphone or camera, StreamNeo can keep a YouTube channel live 24/7 without leaving a computer or home connection on: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It plays uploaded videos; it does not broadcast from a camera. The audio settings above concern YouTube live ingest, so prepare your uploaded audio/video for the file-upload workflow separately.
Nothing has to stay on at home. StreamNeo streams uploaded media as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot regardless of quality; it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month.
