Start by copying the current key and matching YouTube stream URL from Live Control Room, then check how the service expects you to connect. If those details are correct and it still fails, the service provider needs to investigate its integration and the exact error.
What a stream key does—and what rejection can mean
YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” The key and stream URL work together: the streaming software or service uses them to send a feed to YouTube. YouTube’s encoder setup keeps these in separate fields, so a key pasted where the URL belongs will not work. A rejection message does not, by itself, identify which part failed. It could point to a stale or mismatched key, a URL or protocol issue, a channel access or capacity limit, or a problem in the service’s YouTube connection. The provider and its exact error text matter: YouTube’s general instructions cannot establish the acceptance rules of an unnamed 24/7 service.
Fix it in this order

Check which connection method the service uses
Look at the service’s YouTube setup screen or instructions. If it asks you to sign in to YouTube, use that authorization flow rather than pasting a key. If it asks for a stream key, make sure you use the dedicated key field—not a server or stream URL field. YouTube advises users of software that logs in without a stream key to contact that software provider’s support team if there is a problem; see Troubleshoot your YouTube live stream.

Copy the current key for the intended stream
In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and copy the key associated with the stream you intend to send. If the key was reset or changed, replace the saved key in the 24/7 service; updating YouTube alone does not update a separately saved value in the service. YouTube says only a channel owner or manager can reset a stream key. Its stream settings guidance covers managing keys.

Match the stream URL and protocol
Where the service exposes both fields, copy the URL from YouTube’s stream settings and put it in the URL field; keep the key in the key field. YouTube recommends RTMPS and says to use the RTMPS URL when configuring an RTMPS connection. If the service reports an SSL error, check that URL; YouTube’s guidance also suggests trying port 443 in certain cases. A timeout may point to an incorrect URL or a connection that does not support RTMPS. These checks apply only if the service lets you configure the corresponding connection settings. Check channel eligibility and stream limits if the error suggests access or capacity
YouTube says live streaming requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. It also states limits of 10 active streams per channel and 3 per stream key. These are useful checks when an error mentions access or capacity; they do not, on their own, prove why a particular service rejected a key. See Get started with live streaming.

Ask the service provider to inspect the connection
If a freshly copied key and the matching URL still fail—or the service connects through YouTube sign-in—send the provider the exact rejection text and ask it to check its YouTube integration. Include the service’s requested protocol, whether it uses a pasted key or account login, and whether you copied the key again from the intended stream. YouTube notes that third-party software may need an update to work with YouTube Live and directs users to the software’s support team.

Do encoding settings explain a rejected key?
Usually, they are a separate issue. A key rejection concerns the service’s connection or credential handoff; encoder settings concern the feed sent after that connection is established. YouTube’s encoder guidance covers supported video formats including H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1, up to 60 fps, constant bitrate encoding, AAC or MP3 audio, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval with a four-second maximum. Those compatibility and quality settings do not establish why a credential was rejected. See Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
What to send support if it still fails
- The 24/7 service’s name and the full rejection message, copied exactly.
- Whether its setup asks for a pasted stream key or YouTube account sign-in.
- Whether it asks for RTMP or RTMPS, and whether it exposes a URL field separately from the key field.
- Whether you copied the current key from the intended stream after any reset or change.
- Whether YouTube shows a channel eligibility or active-stream limit issue.
Do not send a stream key in a public post or an unsecured support channel: it functions like a credential for sending a stream to your channel. Use the provider’s secure support route.
