If an Indian music playlist in OBS stops advancing, first identify the symptom: a playlist that stops after its last song usually needs Loop Playlist enabled; playback that restarts after you switch scenes is often caused by the VLC Video Source’s visibility behavior; and a playlist that repeats its order involves shuffle behavior, which is a separate setting. Check one relevant control at a time rather than changing everything at once.
Use the right OBS source for a playlist
For a list of songs or videos, use OBS’s VLC Video Source. It supports playlists and requires VLC to be installed before the source is available. OBS’s Media Sources documentation, dated January 11, 2022, says: “If you are using 64-bit OBS, you must install 64-bit VLC.” Match VLC’s architecture to OBS: if OBS is 64-bit, install 64-bit VLC. This is a compatibility requirement, not proof that an architecture mismatch caused a particular playback symptom.
The built-in Media Source is intended for an individual media file rather than a multi-item playlist. If VLC Video Source is missing, confirm VLC is installed and that its architecture matches OBS before troubleshooting playlist settings.
Check the playlist entries first
- In OBS, open the scene containing the VLC Video Source.
- Open that source’s Properties.
- Confirm the expected songs or video files appear in the playlist.
- If an item is missing or fails on its own, open the media file in VLC and check that the file is accessible. Correct missing or outdated playlist paths before investigating shuffle behavior.
The available OBS guidance does not identify broken paths or unsupported files as a definitive cause of playlist advancement problems, so test failing entries individually instead of assuming a particular file format or path is responsible.

Choose loop and shuffle for the symptom
Loop Playlist and Shuffle Playlist control different things. Loop determines whether playback starts again after the source reaches the end of its items; shuffle randomizes the order. OBS documents Loop Playlist as enabled by default and Shuffle Playlist as disabled by default.

Change only the control related to what you observe, then watch the playlist through the end of a song or a scene transition. Enabling shuffle will not make a list loop after its last item, and enabling loop will not randomize its order.

Prevent scene changes from restarting playback
In the VLC Video Source properties, inspect what the source does when it becomes invisible. OBS documents three choices:
- Stop when not visible, restart when visible — the default. If a scene change hides the source, it may stop and then begin again when the scene returns.
- Pause when not visible, resume when visible — pauses playback while hidden and resumes it when shown again.
- Always play even when not visible — keeps playback going while the source is hidden.
Choose the behavior that fits the broadcast. If the music should continue through scene changes, use a pause/resume or always-play option rather than stop/restart. Then switch away from and back to the scene to verify the result.

When shuffle repeats the same order after a scene revisit
Some users report that a shuffled VLC Video Source does not reshuffle when its scene is revisited. An OBS issue filed on November 11, 2024, describes a user running OBS 30.2.0 on Windows 10 whose current song restarted after returning to a scene with shuffle selected. An older issue filed on October 11, 2020, reported similar behavior on OBS 26.0.2 and Windows 10 Pro 1909; it is marked closed, but the issue page does not state a resolution. These are reports tied to particular versions and circumstances, not confirmation that every current OBS installation has the same defect.
A November 23, 2020, OBS forum reply suggests using the Directory Watch Media plugin as a filter on the VLC Video Source, then assigning its Refresh hotkey. The reply says Refresh re-saves the source properties and reshuffles when Shuffle is enabled. This is community advice, not an official fix guarantee. Before installing it, check that the plugin build supports your OBS version and operating system.

Only investigate network caching for network media
The VLC Video Source has a Network caching control, documented with a default of 400 ms. The OBS documentation does not say that changing this setting fixes advancement for local playlists. Consider it only if your playlist uses network-hosted media or you see buffering; there is no documented alternative value established as a general fix. For local files that play smoothly, focus instead on playlist entries, loop, shuffle, and scene visibility.
