Why a Windows update can take a 24/7 stream offline
A Windows-hosted broadcast depends on the computer and encoder staying active. A restart ends the running OBS process, so a stream that was live before the update will not resume merely because OBS has automatic reconnect enabled. Windows offers restart scheduling and active-hours controls to help avoid inconvenient restarts, but a stream that runs around the clock has no naturally idle period. Prepare Windows and YouTube before maintenance
Choose and communicate a restart window
- Open Windows Update and review active hours and available restart scheduling options. Set a time outside your planned broadcast window where possible.
- Use Pause updates only as a temporary scheduling measure, not as a permanent way to keep a 24/7 stream online. Windows may still need a restart to complete updates.
- If a restart is unavoidable, schedule maintenance and arrange for someone to check the stream afterward. On a managed or business PC, restart behavior may be controlled by administrator policy; do not assume consumer settings override it.
Confirm the YouTube stream configuration
In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, verify the stream key, stream URL, and the selected stream’s auto-start and auto-stop settings. Those options affect how YouTube responds to encoder connections; do not assume they will resume the intended broadcast after a reboot. Treat the stream key like a password and reset it if you think it has been exposed. YouTube documents the controls in Manage live stream settings and the encoder workflow in Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
Set OBS reconnect for connection drops
In OBS, enable automatic reconnect and choose retry delay and maximum retries appropriate for your connection. These controls are for interruptions while OBS remains running; they are not a post-reboot launch mechanism. If disconnects recur, inspect OBS logs and diagnose dropped frames or network interruptions using the OBS stream connection troubleshooting guide. OBS’s reconnect controls are reflected in its English locale strings.

Test the broadcast before leaving it unattended
Run a test broadcast before relying on an unattended stream, especially after changing Windows, OBS, or YouTube settings. Check the full path from media playback through encoder ingest to the public watch page.
- Confirm the Live Control Room preview appears and that the correct video and audio are playing.
- Review YouTube’s stream-health messages and verify the public watch page is receiving audible playback.
- If you record a local archive as a backup, confirm the file is being created and continues to grow.
- If you have a backup encoder or failover arrangement, test it. Do not assume it can reach the same event or switch seamlessly without a real test.
YouTube recommends previewing, monitoring stream health, testing failover, and checking local archives in its live streaming tips. Its encoder settings guidance also emphasizes choosing settings your connection can sustain. A backup encoder may reduce some interruption risks, but it does not prevent Windows from restarting, and it still needs configuration and someone or something to verify it works.

What to do after Windows restarts
- Wait for Windows to finish updating, then confirm the PC has network access.
- Open OBS or your chosen encoder. Check the intended profile and scene, Hindi music playlist or media source, audio levels, and YouTube destination before starting output.
- Check the Live Control Room for active ingest and preview, then check the public watch page for audible playback. Do not take OBS reconnect as proof that the computer rebooted into a working broadcast.
- If the prior event has ended or the encoder cannot resume it, use your channel’s prepared process to create or start the appropriate event. Verify its settings and preview rather than repeatedly reconnecting blindly.
- Review the archive and stream status. Resolve any YouTube warning or copyright notice before restarting the same material.
Why there is no universal automatic restart recipe
The correct unattended restart procedure depends on your Windows version, OBS configuration, authentication state, media source, and YouTube event settings. The official guidance establishes update scheduling, stream configuration, reconnect controls, and testing practices; it does not establish one universally reliable Task Scheduler or command-line setup that logs into the right account, opens the right OBS profile and scene, starts the intended media, and resumes the intended event after every update restart.
If you automate those steps, validate them against your exact setup using a private or unlisted test event before relying on them. Confirm what happens when Windows reboots, whether OBS starts with the expected scene and media, whether YouTube accepts the encoder connection, and whether the event remains available as intended. A script that merely launches OBS is not proof that the stream has resumed.

Copyright is a separate risk from Windows restarts
Keeping the encoder online does not establish that you have the rights to broadcast the songs. YouTube’s livestream terms say the broadcaster represents that it has the necessary rights for live content, including music licensing rights from artists, record labels, publishers, and other royalty participants. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content; a match may lead to a temporary interruption or termination. Even a broadcaster with a licence may be interrupted if the rights owner has not added the channel to its Content ID allowlist. Before broadcasting Hindi songs, confirm that your permissions cover livestreaming on YouTube and the relevant territories and uses. Buying a track, crediting its singer, or seeing it labelled “free” does not by itself grant livestream rights. YouTube explains the distinction between public-domain material and content that actually has permission in its tips to find safe music. For licensed third-party tracks, ask the rights owner to allowlist your channel where required.
