Set the encoder to read your station’s listen stream, loop an image as video, and send both to a YouTube broadcast using its ingest settings. AzuraCast’s documented output is radio audio; its documentation does not provide a native YouTube video destination or a complete supported static-image workflow. AzuraCast documentation
What you need before you start
- An AzuraCast station audio URL that the encoder can reach. For AutoDJ, use the station’s public listen stream or a mount point. For a live DJ, the source audio comes through the DJ connection to Liquidsoap; the encoder still needs an audio URL it can access.
- A separate encoder running on a computer or server that can stay connected to both AzuraCast and YouTube. This is a practical requirement of the workflow, not a specific hardware requirement from either platform.
- A still image file, an installed encoder such as FFmpeg, and a YouTube channel with access to YouTube Studio live streaming.
- The broadcast’s ingest address and stream key from your own YouTube Studio settings. Treat the key as a password; do not share it or put it in a public command, screenshot, or webpage.
Use the connection details shown for your own station rather than copying a sample hostname or credentials. If a reverse proxy prevents broadcaster connections, AzuraCast advises using the server’s direct address for broadcaster software. AzuraCast encoder connections
Choose the audio source
AutoDJ
For an AutoDJ station, point the encoder at its public listen URL or a suitable mount point. AzuraCast’s mount points can provide different audio formats or bitrates; choose one compatible with the encoder and reachable from the machine running it. AutoDJ uses Liquidsoap to produce and manage station audio, while the broadcast frontend distributes that audio to listeners. AzuraCast documentation
Live DJ audio
If the station is currently being fed by a live DJ, ensure that the station’s configured DJ software is connected to Liquidsoap and that the encoder can read the resulting station listen stream. AzuraCast documents compatible broadcast software and station connection details; the encoder workflow downstream is otherwise the same. AzuraCast streaming guide

Set up FFmpeg to combine the stream and image
The encoder needs two inputs: an audio stream from AzuraCast and a still image that it repeats as continuous video. It then encodes a video-and-audio output for YouTube. The following is an illustrative FFmpeg pattern, not a tested end-to-end command; adapt it for your installed FFmpeg build, actual stream format, image dimensions, and YouTube Studio ingest settings. Check the FFmpeg manual for the options supported by your build.
ffmpeg -re -loop 1 -framerate 30 -i /path/to/station-image.jpg
-i "https://YOUR-AZURACAST-HOST/your-mount"
-map 0:v:0 -map 1:a:0
-c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -tune stillimage
-pix_fmt yuv420p -r 30 -g 60 -b:v 3M -maxrate 3M -bufsize 6M
-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 -ac 2
-f flv "rtmps://YOUR-YOUTUBE-INGEST/YOUR-STREAM-KEY"
This example assumes FFmpeg can read the chosen station URL and that the image file exists. Replace every example address with values from your station and broadcast. Do not publish a real stream key: put it in a private configuration or otherwise ensure it cannot be exposed through shared logs, process listings, or shell history. YouTube describes stream-specific ingest configuration in its Live Streams API documentation.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Image: Use a clear, correctly oriented image at the output size. A static image still has to be encoded as continuous video for the duration of the broadcast.
- Input mapping: The example maps video from the image input and audio from the station input. If your mount exposes an unexpected audio stream or format, inspect and adjust the mapping rather than assuming every mount behaves alike.
- Reconnect behavior: A network interruption can stop an encoder process or interrupt its inputs. Test how your chosen encoder and host behave after a dropped connection; do not assume that a sample command provides automatic recovery.
Choose YouTube encoder settings
YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted ingest and currently lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 video, with AAC or MP3 audio. For a straightforward H.264 SDR setup, it recommends a 2-second keyframe interval, not exceeding 4 seconds, and constant bitrate (CBR). YouTube Live encoder settings
| Setting | Example or recommendation |
|---|---|
| Video codec | H.264 for the example; YouTube also lists H.265 and AV1. |
| Resolution and frame rate | 720p at 30 fps is a modest static-image profile. |
| Video bitrate | YouTube recommends 3 Mbps for H.264 720p30; it recommends 5 Mbps for H.264 1080p30. |
| Rate control | CBR. |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds recommended; no more than 4 seconds. |
| Audio | AAC or MP3; YouTube recommends 128 Kbps stereo at 44.1 kHz. |
| Ingest | RTMPS recommended by YouTube. |
These are YouTube recommendations, not mandatory settings for every channel or network, and they can change. Check the live encoder-settings page before configuring a production stream. Choose a bitrate your outbound connection can sustain consistently; higher resolution does not improve the still image if it creates an unstable uplink.

Create and verify the YouTube broadcast
- In YouTube Studio, create or select the live broadcast and obtain its ingest details. Follow the current Studio labels and options for your channel; availability may depend on channel eligibility and settings.
- Enter the ingest address and stream key in the encoder’s private configuration. Keep the key out of public material.
- Start the encoder and wait for YouTube Studio to recognize the incoming stream. Confirm the correct broadcast is selected before making it public.
- Check that the image is visible, station audio is present, and audio and video continue without unexpected interruption. Listen for sync problems, clipping, silence, or repeated disconnects.
- Review YouTube’s stream-health status and test before relying on the broadcast. YouTube recommends testing with audio and motion similar to the eventual stream and monitoring stream health. YouTube Live encoder settings
Copyright and YouTube policy checks
A static image does not change the rights status of the radio audio. Confirm that you have the necessary rights to broadcast every track on YouTube, and review any claims or restrictions shown in YouTube Studio. Do not assume that a station’s permission to play music through its own stream also grants permission to rebroadcast it on YouTube. YouTube’s reused-content and monetization assessments are separate from copyright permission; a permitted stream is not automatically eligible for monetization.
Optional: display changing track information
AzuraCast exposes a now-playing JSON endpoint that updates every few seconds. Custom overlay software can read that metadata and render track information over the image, but the endpoint by itself is not a video overlay or a YouTube feature. AzuraCast now-playing data

Troubleshooting
The encoder cannot connect to AzuraCast
- Check the station host, port, mount path, and whether the URL is reachable from the encoder machine.
- For a DJ input, verify the DJ connection details and credentials in the station configuration.
- If a reverse proxy blocks broadcaster connections, try the direct server address as AzuraCast recommends for broadcaster software. AzuraCast encoder connections
YouTube receives video but no audio
- Confirm the selected mount is the intended audio output and is reachable from the encoder.
- Check that FFmpeg maps the audio stream from the AzuraCast input and that the chosen audio codec is supported.
- If the source is missing audio, inspect AzuraCast’s Liquidsoap and station logs for stream-generation problems. AzuraCast documentation
YouTube receives audio but no video
- Verify that the image path is correct and that FFmpeg is looping it to produce continuous video.
- Check the encoded video codec and output settings against YouTube’s accepted encoder settings. YouTube Live encoder settings
The stream is unstable or drops
- Reduce the video bitrate or resolution if the encoder host’s upload connection cannot sustain the selected output.
- Watch YouTube stream-health notices and test the stream in advance.
- Check the encoder host’s network path to both AzuraCast and YouTube, and verify what happens when either input disconnects.
The visual shows no current track details
A fixed image will not change with the playlist. To show now-playing information, build or configure a separate overlay that reads AzuraCast’s JSON endpoint and renders metadata into the video; the endpoint alone does not generate that overlay. AzuraCast now-playing data
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded video looping on a YouTube channel rather than relay AzuraCast’s live radio output, StreamNeo is a different workflow: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed, and does not ingest an AzuraCast radio stream as the method above does.
